    Very good video. Thank you for actually showing us the steps as you perform them. Many of the videos I reviewed today did the work off camera and told us what they did without showing how they did it. I couldn't figure out how to disassemble the three connectors under the dash from each other. Thanks to you, I can complete the job now. FYI I'm replacing the switch in a 98 GMC Sierra. There are two extra small connectors in the harness that are not in the harness you replaced, so some extra steps are needed in that model.

    Mine didn't have the Phillips screws. Mine was E-4 Torx. Lisle makes a socket for this job.. it's longer than the typical E-4 sockets. I think it's a 27490. But your video still helped me make up my mind to wait for a day that I had the mental energy to tackle this job. One of your other videos gave me the strength to decide to do a Panther platform wiper motor that the park switch was out of. My ignition switch has apparently been going out for awhile. Last Dec my starter solenoid went out and I had a starter put on. The battery wiped out in the cold snap we had. Then one day on the road it wouldn't crank but it would start by jumping the positive on the battery to the starter. Had everything tested at a local parts store so I knew it had to be the switch. But that funny thing the transmission has been doing for 2 years is now gone.

    thanks for the video and replies. did the switch today and so far so good! the official method is to pull the steering wheel and key lock/cylinder. since my blazer is almost 20 years old, I cheated. cut out a small piece of the steering cover directly under the key. this allowed me to slip the top cover off without removing anything else. cover went right back on and the cut out is barley noticeable...and it is my personal vehicle and does not offend me at all! LOL thanks again !

    Thanks for the video! Quite helpful. I wanted to point out that my 1997 K1500 GMC has screws that require a 4mm Torx SOCKET, which is unavailable in most consumer kits. I had to go to a specialty tool store to get the correct size. Also the wire loom on the connector that you loosened wasn't long enough to come out where I could get at it. I had to leave it in place. The gold screw on mine didn't come out, it just unscrewed. It had a keeper within the connector body. I'm only pointing this out in case anybody else runs into the same thing. Quite a frustrating job, particularly at -20, but a little easier with the help of your video. Again, thank you.

  • @MidwestGarage
    @MidwestGarage9 жыл бұрын

    ***** That definitely sounds like a bad ignition switch. Ignition switches are such an intricate part to vehicles nowadays its really hard to pinpoint exact symptoms. For example, my transmission quit going in to first gear, I thought the trans was taking a dump ...turned out to be an ignition switch problem! I could explain more about how the Transmission Control Module is powered by the ignition switch and so on...but you are right, I should have went over some of the most common symptoms of a bad switch. I hope this helps, and makes your fix go a lot smoother!

    My 97’ has a intermittent no crank and every time it does it I’m somewhere else without my test light. It did do at home once and I wiggled the starter relay and it started but later it did the no crank thing and it didn’t work out that way. I’ve checked out everything and the last time it didn’t crank I would turn the key really hard and it would click like the battery was weak. I finally got it started so I’m hoping that if I replace the ignition switch that will fix it.

    That's an awesome video, you are head and shoulders better than most how to video's on youtube. Your explainations and tips set you apart and you don't try and hold the camera yourself like 90% of the guys on here. But, my question for you is I have this problem. I have 96 Z71 GMC 10 days ago I drove it and I went to restart it and I got nothing. No crank, plenty volts and no check engine light, so I did the usual, make sure it's in park, take out of park put in neutral, try and start (nothing). But, after about 10 tries it ramdomly cranked and started. Drove It about a week, it did the same no start 1 more time, then finally started. Now it just won't do anything. No crank No check Engine light, plently of volts, can hear fuel pump engage, dash lights come on, gauges work, radio plays, horn blows, et cetera...Checked battery cables, tried to jump start it with a running Hemi, no luck... Very frustrating, how would I know or better what's the best way to trouble shoot?

  • @MidwestGarage

    @MidwestGarage

    10 жыл бұрын

    Hey thanks man, I appreciate it! Well its tough to say, but my first thought is that its a faulty starter. Quite often when you have 12 volts and it wont crank, its the starter solenoid not grounding properly, but it will still work sporadically. So i'd check that out first. Best way to do that is get underneath and wack the starter with a hammer a couple times. It can usually knock that solenoid into grounding how its supposed to. But on the other hand, those ignition switches can mess with so many things its ridiculous. For example, my transmission quit shifting, I lost all my gears except reverse...but shut the truck off and start it again and it'd work just fine. The fix for the transmission was the ignition switch (since it directly powers the transmission control module). So I guess the first thing to do is check out the starter, if that seems to be alright then maybe hook up an OBD2 scanner and see if it has any codes, even though the check engine light is off. If its not the starter or connections then its probably an ignition switch. Hope this helps!

    Hey thank you for such a fast and professional answer....I got it figured out...The hot line to the starter was making partial contact with the starter because it was split and corroded. Thank god I didn't tear into the dash or steering column and mess with that massive spaghetti looking bunch of wires...Although you made it look super easy on your vid....Thanks again...I subscribed to your channel and look forward to more... You should make a video on "how to make a how to video" and teach guys to: 1:) Stop trying to hold the camera yourself and work 2) Stop cutting away before they start, then cut back when the work is done and verbally describe how they did it 3) Stop talking for 3 minutes in the beginning... 4) Use that fast forward mode like you use on long parts of the vids 5) Do like you and point out tips or how not to break things that a guy with no experience will probably break 6) Do like you and say this part is frustrating but stay calm and patient and it will come apart... I use youtube a lot to do a lot my own work on everything from construction to washer and dryer to my HVAC, 4 wheeler, truck, car, backhoe, you name it....probably 9 out of ten times I can fix it....but, I had a few things that I've had to send to a shop But I just wanted to point out that your videos are nicely made...

    Quick question. Ive got a 95 Chevy and when the ignition is turned on the dash lights won't come on. I sometimes have to wait a few minutes or rapidly turn the key off and back on before the dash lights finally come on (signalling its ready to start). If I try to crank the engine while the dash lights are off it won't start. I'm assuming its the ignition switch that's the cause of this? I just wanted to ask since symptoms of a bad ignition switch weren't covered. Thanks!

    You're very welcome, I'm glad I could help! I'm wondering if the 2 wire clip that you disconnected is for the neutral safety switch? I'm sorry, I'm terrible when it comes to wiring! The PCM should be one of those big 32-pin connectors though...I would look really well under there and see if you can find any place that that 2 wire clip can connect to, and compare it with your wiring schematics. Have you tried starting the truck in neutral?

    agree it was a good video to an extent, you did not explain about the 3 wires attached on the under section of the wire with a plastic clip. I am a woman trying to do this as I cannot afford to pay someone to do it and it took me some time to figure out where that was to be connected. If I could add a photo I would but the part just flaps around is the blue brown and beige wires. looking at the comparison of the 2 together the one on the left is the extra wires .

    Midwest Garage Hey, Thanks a lot for getting back to me. My Chev is a Canadian version so maybe different than yours. It needed a E 4 (Female) Torx! Totally ridiculous! I live in the country, so I was able to get a E 4 socket at my local parts store, which worked for the side screw but even though it was 1/4 drive I couldn't fit it in to get the top screw. I did an internet search for an E 4 Torx in Calgary (My closest metropolitan area) and the best I could do was a maybe! A 3 hour round trip for me and a maybe! So I had to zip cut off the top of the socket and krazy glue it to a #1 Robertson screw driver! And got the damn thing out! Ok and then I get to the harness connection! Damn thing may as well have been krazy glued together struggled and struggled then gave up about 10 p.m. To make a long story less long? Started fresh this morning ended up having to carefully cut away the housing piece by piece with small snips until I could get a screw driver between the 2 parts and gently break the bond between them! After that everything went pretty smooth. Back together and working perfectly now.So roughly 10 hours (For what should have been a 2 hour job) and a lot more profanity than I like to use later, It's working!Without your video it probably would have been 20 hours and a lot more cursing!!!My hats off to you sir! An excellent video. Keep up the good work!CheersKale

    Hey this is a good video. My problem is similar to the comment left by 1969Bossman429. About 2 or 3 times a month when I start my 98 c1500 it will start then cut right back off. • @MidwestGarage

    @MidwestGarage

    9 жыл бұрын

    I didnt, however...I did have that exact problem at a different time and it turned out to be a short in the wiring at the sending unit (inside the gas tank) so my fuel pump would intermittently stop working and kill the truck. Its sometimes hard to diagnose an ignition switch since they can affect the vehicle in so many different ways, so I would start off by making sure your fuel pump wiring doesn't have a short and periodically ground itself out. Intermittent problems like that could also be caused by a weak fuel pump. I'd check those and if everything checks out then it might be safe to say the ignition switch is the issue.

    I have a question i have a 95 chevy truck. The truck starts when I turn the key to the on position without turning it. It also does a screeching sound as if the starter is the trying to turn the truck on while it is on already.There is also a clicking sound when I change gears from park to drive .The only way to stop the sound is if I put in into drive or I turn the key in the ignition slightly backwards..there is also no clicking sound if I hold the key in that position . I believe it might be the switch but as of now I'm clueless .

  • @MidwestGarage

    @MidwestGarage

    9 жыл бұрын

    I don't know for sure but I doubt the switch would cause the starter to keep engaging, or do goofy things depending on where the key is positioned. It could be as simple as the ignition lock cylinder going bad so it is trying to start the vehicle in the on position instead of start, fixes itself when the key is turned back, etc. But then again, I don't think a faulty ignition lock cylinder would cause a clicking sound in the column while changing gears. The problem might be that the entire column is out of whack...but the actual ignition switch probably isn't the culprit. Lock cylinders are cheap, I'd replace that and see if it fixes your problems. If not, then maybe look into getting a new steering column out of the salvage yard or something.

    I have a question. My 1998 chev 1500 ignition or something is acting up. I have to turn my truck off when it's still in drive. When I want to start it I put my key in and turn it forward then I have to quickly put the truck in neutral and then put it in drive once it started. I have to keep truck in drive because when it's in neutral or park it's always trying to start. Even without the key in. So when I want to start it I just put the key in, turn the key on, put it in neutral or park for a couple seconds then straight into drive so that the truck doesn't keep trying to start. Runs perfect when im on the road just starting is a chore.

  • @MidwestGarage

    @MidwestGarage

    9 жыл бұрын

    Shawn McCabe Wow...I've never heard of anything like that before haha. My bet would be that maybe an ignition wire is rubbing on some transmission wiring or something, so that when it's in neutral power is being sent to the starter? All I can say is I'd tear apart the steering column and lower dash like I did in this video and start checking all those wires. The nice thing about changing out your ignition switch is that you get all new wiring harness with it. So problems with your Transmission Control Unit can sometimes be solved with this fix as well. I hope this helps Shawn, let me know if you get it fixed and what was causing that to happen, its definitely an interesting problem!

There were also some issues with the dash lights i believe. • @1969Bossman429

    What was the initial problem? Were you having intermittent no starts? I can stop to get gas, jump back into my 99 Suburban and NOTHING! Sometimes wait for 10 to 15 minutes and then I'm good. But I have rigged a starter relay (under the hood) by removing the relay and directly soldered two prongs that make the starter connection and with the key left on, it will start. Quickly make that connection with that relay and remove it to disengage the starter and put the other relay back in while it's running. Either it's the security system (no lights flashing) or the resistance isn't telling reading correctly in the switch. May go ahead and try a switch just to eliminate that part before I take it to a dealer.

  • @MidwestGarage

    @MidwestGarage

    10 жыл бұрын

    I didn't have any trouble starting, but my initial problem was the dash intermittently acting up, the tach would drop to zero going down the highway and every dash light would come on, but it ran fine. The big problem however was transmission failure. I lost 1st and 2nd gear, but everything else worked fine. After running the scanner on it I decided to replace the ignition switch (since it directly powers the TCM) before looking into physical transmission problems. This fixed all the problems. I'd do a little research first and hook up a scanner to the OBD2 to see what the engine computer has to tell you. But it's probably a safe bet that your ignition switch is to blame, I've heard of it causing intermittent starting problems in a lot of these late GM trucks.

    So, most people have tons of different issues related to ignition switch problems...from dash lights to engine not staying running. My issue was the transmission. I hopped in my truck one day and it was very sluggish. Turns out I lost 1st and 2nd gear, and reverse was hit or miss. I thought my automatic transmission was going out, but luckily I looked into the computer first. It turns out that the ignition switch directly controls the TCM (transmission control module). So if you're having weird transmission problems, definitely check this out before you have a mechanic tear into the trans.

  • @MidwestGarage

    +Carla E Hey, thanks! Isolated Virus' question is further down below...I dunno why it won't let me respond to individual questions sometimes. So...if you're having starting issues, and you've checked all of your battery and starter connections for corrosion and snugness, replaced your starter, and had your clutch safety switch tested...then I'd definitely say it's an ignition switch problem. Ignition switches usually always start out being an intermittent problem and then they will slowly get worse and worse. Once again though, I'd recheck all battery connections first. Sometimes it's as easy as finding a loose ground and tightening it! If that doesn't help, than it's time to tear apart the dash! Hope this helps!
