    I am a glass company owner. The name of the glue the fellows used is "butyl tape" ; however, this stuff should never be used on an installation like this. The proper sealant would be automotive urethane, which costs about $25 a tube at the auto parts store. However, most glass shops will sell it to you for $5 to $10 (it costs us about $3.50 a tube). DON'T USE BUTYL.. It won't hold up on this type of installation.

    Dude is "right" from a technical stand point. The window is held in place by two rubber (key word coming) "press fit" hinges. They may "pop in", but they sure as hell do not "pop" right out. Neighborhood hoodlums broke my window out to steal my buddy heater. Spent three hours vacuuming the shattered glass yesterday. The window is glued to a rubber seal that has the hinges. From personal experience, it does not "pop" right out. But with more knowledge/insight or ingenuity it may "pop" right out, but that wasn't my experience.

  • @aeio_

    @aeio_

    7 жыл бұрын

    Ask a woman -- width _always_ matters. (Or is it size? I always get those two confused. ;-) ) I'd try to match the original if I could -- too small and there might not be enough adhesive to hold the window in place / wind noise leakage. Too wide and the tape will be exposed to the elements -- would work, but might not look as good as the original. I see tapes sizes are 1/4 and 3/8, or 0.25 vs 0.375, or a difference of 1/8. (0.125) At that size width DOESN'T matter. I think my older model truck has no screws, just a friction fit for the plastic frame. Guess I'll find out shortly.

    Hey guys! Although I am proud of you for attempting to install this yourself, you should NOT have installed it with butyl tape. It came from the factory glued in with urethane for a reason. The butyl is going to trap dust, and the dust will trap moisture, which promotes rust. Also, because this is a frame that will get a lot of vibration, the butyl is going to fail within a few months. Urethane will cure and bond the frame with over 600psi of tensile strength, whereas the gooey butyl tape will never cure, and will have only about 20psi of tensile strength. You guys have a great future, but please, check with me first! I've installed many thousands of glasses over the past 35 years. I am happy to advise you on the best techniques.

  • @SealofPerfection

    Just used the urethane window sealant that some of the commenters have mentioned and it didn't work. It leaks worse than before. Use at your own risk. *Edit, apparently this urethane requires a primer"3M single step primer 08681 or 08682)" not mentioned on the tube nor on the Amazon listing nor reviews. The tube costs about $16 and the primer costs $42.

  • @SealofPerfection

    @SealofPerfection

    You might want to review how you installed yours. You are going through telling everyone that it is bad advice to use urethane, but it is actually the correct advice. You evidently just did not do yours correctly. You have to apply a primer to the window and to the body before you put the urethane on it. I suspect you probably missed that step

  • @fern9234

    @fern9234

    4 ай бұрын

    @@SealofPerfection To be honest, the tube comes with only warnings about the dangers of using the product and no directions at all. Nothing on the Amazon listing either. Now that you mention it, I searched the 3M site for this product and it does say it calls for primer 08681 or 08682 to be used. It's kind of frustrating that it never mentions it because apparently I'm not the only one. I just searched the Amazon reviews for the word "primer" and it seems that out of 1200+ reviews and questions only 2 people used a primer with it. I'm still skeptical that this will work given that both my surfaces were extremely clean and prepped with alcohol and it's bonding plastic to painted metal. Thank you for any advice you can offer, you obviously know what you're talking about.

  • @SealofPerfection

    @SealofPerfection

    4 ай бұрын

    @@fern9234 they should list it as for professional use. If you have the correct type it will absolutely work because that is what the window was installed from the factory with in the first place. Remember them having to try to chisel that old sealer off and telling us that they couldn't get it all off ? That was urethane. The way it was done in this video, is with butyl. That was only used with glasses that bolt in, where the screws or bolts are what actually holds the glass in the car. The butyl is not a glue as, stated in the video. It is a sealer. That said, it is pretty tacky and it might hold one in there for awhile. But that's not the way it's supposed to be used.

  • @fern9234

    @@SealofPerfection I understand. The stuff I bought was 3M 08693 auto glass urethane window adhesive. Can you confirm if that is what is required. Also, how important is to remove the old urethane since it's is extremely bonded to the painted metal? Also am I to prime both the plastic frame and the metal (or old urethane if it's ok to leave it)? Thank you for your help. I edited my original comment btw.

  • @SealofPerfection

    @@fern9234 I believe according to the TDS you are supposed to leave 1 to 2 mm of the old urethane if you can. And yes I would put the primer on the plastic piece, after thoroughly cleaning it with waxing grease remover or some type of solvent that did not melt it

  • @callsforservice219

    That’s butyl tape. It has it applications but this isn’t it. The original install is urethane automotive adhesive and should be installed with the same. You are giving wrong instructions and are causing others to do the same. You run the risk of the glass coming out when not using the correct adhesive for the job.
