HOW TO REPLACE CASSETTE DECK BELTS INEXPENSIVELY ( OR FOR FREE!)

This method is actually good when determining if a deck is worth restoring or not. Slap a rubber band on there, if all is well then you know it's worth the $15-20 for a proper belt.

@mason - That's the first intelligent reason to use rubber bands that I've seen. IF the only alternative is a belt set and I acquired the deck in unknown condition (powers up but doesn't play), using rubber bands *might* be helpful. Usually though, if the unit's drive wheels spin that's enough for me to go forward and buy a kit. But some kits have become ridiculous. $ 100 for a kit for a very TOTL deck is where I LOST it! (Even Nak belts are $ 35). I have several decks that I bought to learn on, use and/or resell. So, kits add up too fast for what I get (an assurance, whether founded or not, that the belts are the correct size). I'll probably spring for a wide variety of "assorted" belts. Then, if the unit works, I'm done. When repairing CD players , using rubber bands would often require repeating several steps to remove / replace the rubber bands. Not worth it for what *assorted* belts cost.

Yes it will work... maybe for a few months... And then you'll have to find another rubber band. Belts made for electronics tend to be a different type of rubber than plain old rubber bands. They are far less prone to drying out. A regular rubber band, used for this task and with the warmth inside the cassette deck, will likely dry out and snap within a few months. That said, it's not difficult to put 'em on and yep, free.

drive belt from a rubber band will cause a warble under the slightest load. They are great to see if the transport is working but are far from ideal. If you have to get just one, get the drive belt, sometimes the RWD/FF is a seperate belt and that is not going to be affected by a stretchy band. I rigged up a Sony 615S with a rubber band and it was terrible, but the band was very thin. New belts were $5 a piece at the local electronics store. Ebay is no bargain when it comes to belts.

Often the rubber band will slip off. Also because rubber bands are not perfectly balanced they can cause wow and flutter. But they are a great way to get a cassette deck going until you can get a proper belt. If you like to tinker like I do!

Easy to do on a wide belt deck, the decks that use a square type belt are a problem, try to use a rubber band on those and you'll have problems, most rubber bands are not the same all the way around, they have bumps in them which you will hear, you also should be calibrating your speed after any belt change, it will show up in a recording when you listen to it back.
