Since a number of retro video games (original Game Boy, GBC, NES, SNES, N64, and Genesis) relied on a small lithium battery to save games, those batteries go bad over time and need to be replaced. This tutorial shows an easy method of replacing the battery in a Pokemon Gold cartridge, but it can also be used on a Pokemon Silver, Crystal, Blue, Red, Yellow, Zelda games, or even games with batteries from other retro gaming systems.
FAQ
Q: Why can't I save my game on my old Pokémon Game Boy Color cartridge?
A: Before game systems saved games on flash memory and hard drives, games relied on lithium batteries to maintain saved games. Unfortunately, when that battery dies, so does the saved game. It's sort of like taking the battery out of your watch. Once the battery is gone, the watch loses the time.
Q: My cartridge lets me save the game, but when I turn it on later the saved game is gone. Is my battery dead?
A: Yes, without a working battery, the game will attempt to save and then lose the saved game data after you power off your Game Boy. Bummer, huh?!
Q: Which Pokémon games does this repair method address?
A: We've used it to repair Pokémon Gold, Silver, Crystal, Red Version, Blue Version, and Yellow Version (Special Pikachu Edition). It'll also work for GBA versions too!
Q: My battery is dead. Will replacing it restore my saved game?
A: Unfortunately, when the battery dies, your saved game files are lost.
Q: My battery is old but still working, is there any way to switch the battery without losing the game save?
A: When you remove the battery, your saved game will be lost. If you're thinking about putting in a fresh battery, you should back up your saved game to a device like a Mega Memory Card.
Q: What size battery do I need?
A: Most likely, if you're replacing a battery for a Pokemon Game Boy Color cartridge, you'll need a CR2025 Lithium battery. However, some cartridges originally used a CR2016. When you remove the existing battery, you can check its labeling or for battery size information stamped on the board next to the battery.

What a lifesaver! I was so upset when a ton of "work" I did on my Pokemon Silver game was completely gone. Some friends told me it was a battery issue so I opened up the game to see what I could see and found a big problem (Battery that doesn't come out). So I thought, I'm sure someone on KZread has a repair video. This one was not only helpful but also interesting. You guys are great. Now I feel confident I can fix my game as soon as I get the right battery for it!

Pretty cool thanks for the tutorial. I had to replace the battery in my gameboy advances (I have the old school non flip one) Pokemon Gold cartridge a few years back... wasnt difficult luckily I even soldiered the battery in. I was lucky enough to find some exact battery replacements with the prongs attached. Only bad thing was they were a bit expensive cause I had to buy 6 or 8 of them and shipping lithium batteries is expensive due to the fire hazard from the explosive/volatile nature of lithium batteries. Kind of a fun project though lol I felt hella accomplished and smart when I got done even though it wasnt that difficult.

NOTE: You can use any 3V round battery in these types of games. I personally use CR2032 for the longer lifespan. These are a bit thicker and the cover for the game is a bit of a tighter fit, but is fine to use.

Just an FYI for everyone. You are able to purchase conductive "glue", also known as " wire glue" that can be used to re-attach a broken bracket if don't have soldering equipment or otherwise just don't know how to solder. It is relatively cheap and effective for small electronic repair such as this.

For people who don't have the security bit light the end of a pen(with everything removed of course) until the plastic is melted 2-3 cm down. Place on the screw for a minute to cool and so it molds around the screw, then twist counter clockwise. It may leave a minor circlular mark(color slightly faded not black burnt) but it's a nice make shift. You may have to repeat when putting the screw back in.

I tried to super glue the first bracket back on but to no avail. Is there any suggestions you have? Is the first bracket necessary in order to place the new battery to again use the game save feature again?

Thanks! I followed this guide, however, I used a CR2032 battery in place of the CR2025 battery and it seems to be working right now. I'm glad I didn't have to solder!

Thank you for this video! After finding out that my Pokemon Crystal cartridge's battery was going dead, I found this video and was able to successfully change the battery! I did have a lot more trouble breaking the wield points on the battery though, but I eventually worked them all off. Also, I can confirm that you do lose your saved game when changing the battery for Pokemon Crystal, but for me it was totally worth it to have time progress again. Thanks again!

I had my battery replaced by a local "vintage" game's store, and i believe that electrical tape was used because after a few months the game ceased to work, so im assuming its out of place. would soldering be a better idea?

  • @Drewcumber
    @Drewcumber2 жыл бұрын

Just did this and it worked well. Useful alternative to soldering and now the battery is easier to replace in the future. If this lasts then it's an improvement to the design and arguably preferable to re-soldering everytime.

You're a flipping lifesaver. I backed up my save file before the battery died and thanks to your tutorial I can now save normally in my Pokemon Crystal again. I used a CR2032 instead of what you used due to a longer battery life, but it still works for saving!

How did you back up your save file before replacing the old battery? I mean, did you use some kind of software or something? I don't understand how you can make that back up just by getting a new battery, because as far as I know, the battery it's kind of a "memory card" in gen 1-2 games.

I had finally got a new battery and the security bit today. I must say, I had THE HARDEST TIME DURING THIS.
