Step-by-step instructions with clear explanations for why each step is needed. Followed it to replace my 2017 Legacy sedan's original battery with an Interstate (maker of the Subaru replacement battery), and it worked well. One ignition key turn to turn on the electronics. A second key turn to start the engine. Thanks for the video and to the experienced tech who did the work!

The dielectric grease on the connector connecting surfaces does NOT make the connection any worse. This might be a problem in a moving connection like a switch but in a stationary connection the grease just squirts away from the connecting surfaces. I suggest to apply grease all over the terminals in order to prevet that white oxide from developing. It does NOT need to be dielectric grease. The dielectric grease is only needed when there is arcing present. The ordinary carbon hydrate grease turns into carbon when arcing occurs and carbon is a conductor. Dielectric grease is some sort of silicone which does not have carbon in it. SInce there should be no arcing in battery terminals, a normal, everyday grease will do just fine.

People argue about this but really a very thin layer, most of which gets displaced, is not going to be enough to hurt the high voltage flow and can help reduce voltage leakage when the car is off. Alternately you can buy a spray called battery terminal protectant.

Seems you forgot the heat shield. I know it may not fit over the new battery but, on the boxer engine the exhaust manifold (for one half of the cylinders) is located just below the battery. Bean-counters at the Subaru would have saved the company couple of pennies by removing the heat shield if they could get away with it.

Hi. Need some help. I have a 2018 WRX Limited with an OEM Subaru battery. Electrical system and battery have been fine up till now; no electrical issues at all. I just wanted to clean the corrosion around the terminals. I disconnected both terminals, cleaned them up, and then reconnected it all back at it was. Now I'm having a problem with the Starlink Infotainment system only; every other electrical is good. The radio system will not reboot/restart. The progress bar reaches the end and then starts over again. What gives? Is this typical if you were to change a battery? Is there a way to reset the Starlink radio? There are not options to select, nor does it ask for a radio code. The backup camera works just fine. I tried disconnecting the terminals again, but no luck. Any suggestions?

It's because they swapped the stock group 25 battery for an improved group 26 battery. The new battery is too large for the stock head shield. This is very commonly done on outbacks of these years in order to have more choices and higher CCA's. Subarus OEM battery are staggeringly smaller than they should be. This is probably because it marginally helps them gain MPG.

The computer reprograms itself after you drive a few miles. Only thing that is weird is that the driver side window controls won't controls the front passenger side window until you fully lower and raise it with the passenger side controls. Also, leave the rear tailgate down as you do the battery swap to avoid a common issue with the auto tailgate.
