How to Replace a Washing Machine Heater - Miele 6260482

How to Replace a Miele 6260482 Washing Machine Heater
Miele 6260482 Waschmaschinen Heizung.
This is a full tutorial of dissembling a defect heater and assembling a new one.
The process is very similar to most of the existing Miele Washing machines, which unlike other manufacturers, use a sealing rubber that cannot be reused, so that each heater comes with new sealing and clips

This is a great video. One thing I would suggest doing differently is the re-assembly. I would suggest fitting the metal bits before insertion into the hole. Do all of this fiddly metal cover and fastening washer bits outside the machine before you insert the element into the machine. It will make your life much, much easier ;-)The chap in the video used his special tool to tap into place but you can also use an appropriate sized socket from a socket wrench set. On the new element use some soap/washing up liquid in the rubber grommet holes and slide the grommet onto both ends of the element right down to the bended bit. Then attach the metal cover onto the element and tap it down around 0.75cm onto the metal of the element ends. Then tap down the fastening washer rings as well, right up to the metal cover and the whole metal assemby should ideally be now be sitting 1cm onto the element ends. Try not to go further than 1.5cm. Once the metal and washers are in place they are set, they will not move. Now when all set you can slide the element assembly into the washing machine hole and into place. Because the rubber grommet is quite far forward at this stage, use your fingers to press the grommet firmly into the hole at this stage. This method allows you the space to be able to seat the grommet with your fingers all around the edges. Once you know the grommet is properly seated, then you can push the protruding metal assembly and element forwards (like a piston) into the machine. This way you can now press the metal assembly firmly up against the grommet by hand. The washing up liquid allows it to slide forward easily but once the washing up liquid has dried nothing will move :-)

This was very helpful indeed. I have a couple of little additions that might be helpful to some. Be careful when pulling free the rubber seal - I was a bit too aggressive and actually bent/distorted the opening and had to carefully tap it back into shape with a bit of wood and a soft mallet. Even then - I wasn’t sure it would seal properly so I used a thin film of silicone bath sealant around the sealing rubber - it worked and actually helped provide a bit of lubricity to re- insert the element/rubber seal into the outer drum aperture.

Great video and very helpful. I'm using a replacement OEM element and the rubber seal grommet that comes with it was ok but not as good quality as the original. Instead I used silicon around the edge of the original grommet. I removed the original very carefully and cleaned it all up and it was still very re-usable. The silicon also acted as a lubricant when re-inserting into the opening. That should now provide a waterproof seal and I think the original was fixed with some factory silicon anyway. I let the silicon dry for 24hrs before re-assembling the machine.

  • @YoramPomer

    @YoramPomer

I am not sure that silicon is needed for sealing. One reason is that they need to be able to send a technician to a customers location for fixing all the problems on the spot. So that telling a customer to wait 24 hours before using the washing machine would not be acceptable. All of the parts that they replace need to be immediately fully functional. This is why the rubber seal can not be reused and needs to be replaced. I am happy that I could help.

@@YoramPomer Hi, when I removed the original factory fitted seal there was a glue/silicon residue all around the edge. I used silicon anyway, firstly it acts as lubricant to slide into the hole easier and secondly there is no harm using silicon as it will guarantee a leak free fit (new or old seal). The OEM rubber seal grommets I was supplied were made of lower quality rubber than the original and I would defo recommend using silicon for them, there has been a lot of users of those who have complained about leaks afterwards. The new original Miele part is better but of course far more expensive. I removed mine very carefully and it was perfectly re-usable. Obviously if you destroy it on removal then you use a new one :-) My old one was defo better than the OEM supplied. Anyway 24hrs is not long to wait, I would personally use silicon no matter what (new or old) and you know it will not leak and saves having to re-open the machine and do it all again.

At 3:09 you place the clip on the wrong location, compare it with the location of the old clip at 2:50. The clip has to be placed more towards the contacts. The marking that you see in the lime (3:09) comes from the holder clip fixed inside of the drum.

@@deuxcent4625 that's correct the clip needs to be placed near the bend in the element towards the opening. The other clip inside the drum is fixed halfway inside and as you slide the element in, the inner most bend is guided through the internal clip. You can see the location of the internal clip by shining a torch through the drum perforations :-)

I find it impossible to push the new rubber sealing fully into the hole. Seams to need yet another 2 mm. Now I cannot pull the new rubber sealing out again. Should I have used some kind of grease on the rubber sealing before pushing the rubber sealing into the hole?

  • @YoramPomer

Slippery liquid that dries could have been helpful - But grease is not a good option. Don't try to pull it out - you will weaken the seal. just lock it in place and it should hold.

What I did: I pulled it out again as 'gently' as I could, it was not as hard as I had expected. Advised by a friend, I put the rubber sealing in 60 degree water which made it more soft. After that I added a few drops of liquid hand soap around the rubber sealing. Finally it was very easy to put rubber sealing in place.

I have a W833 with 22 years of around 7 uses per week and still looks new. Only ever problem was a door seal (which we broke trapping towel in door) easy to replace. Now we have a heating problem sometimes getting warm sometimes seems not to have heated. I'm wondering if this is the element or the sensor or something else? I'm thinking just replace the sensor first. I would appreciate any advice.

  • @YoramPomer

I would try to replace the heating element because after 22 years it can only do good to the washing machine. You will also find lots of dirt down there, so that it will certainly improve the heating efficiency of your washing machine. Its hard to say if this is the problem. It can also be the sensor or even the electronics.

I agree that it’s not easy. I usually look for the Miele schema breakdown . Sometimes I do the opposite by looking at a website that writes very clearly to which device the product that they are selling is compatible. Those that sell at Ebay Germany usually provide this information. Alternatively, do a Google search.

On second thought, it could either be a faulty relay ( or triac, as I am not familiar with this machine) that is permanently closed or the logic board. You can easily measure this - be carful of the high voltage! If it's the relay, then the fix is very straight forward. if its the logic board, then I would send it to someone that knows how to repair it.

@@YoramPomer Yeah, at maximum temperature and without any clothing inside. Because (as you can see) the machine is very dirty inside, even the old heating element was very dirty when you take him out from the outer drum. You probably don't wash at higher temperatures than 40 degrees of Celsius and the mud (or how to name it) caused the heater to burn out. The heat that builds up in the heater body cannot be transferred to the water due to dirt and limescale, and the heater burns out. Wash at least once a month at a minimum of 60 degrees of Celsius using a classic powder detergent, or at least 3-4 times a year run a cotton program at the highest temperature (95 C) with 200 - 300g of citric acid (of course without laundry). 😉

I don't agree. Although having screws that tighten the heater to the drum feels like a better construction, there are good reasons that Miele decided on this solution (Miele is not a company that saves on Quality): 1. You must replace the sealing with the heater element because by taking out the old one, you will make it unusable. 2. The are no screws that can get stuck or rust, so that you will always be able to remove the old heater, even after 20 years of use. 3. The rubber seal gets tighter over time because of the heat and the movement of the machine. Whereas screws can get lose over time. 4. The quality of the parts is so high, that if you follow the instructions, then success is guaranteed
