you can safely presume that Tom is right , a-z , then his wisdom gets simple , then one more edit for tv . the trick is seeing what's really wrong ,and what caused it , and resolving it all.
I'm telling you the old guys with experience do it best hands down. Great vid.

Great job Tommy. Hey I was asked to repair a 100 yr old house front door jam that the wind had ripped the storm door hinges out and stripped out the wood in the jam. I chiseled out 12" long sections where the hinges go replaced with oak, glued in with Grizzly glue, and then countersinked a few smaller engineered screws, plugged and filled the seams and sanded all smooth. Then painted the door jam. Looked like new. Replaced the storm door. One year later another wind storm took the door off and the hinges stayed put with the screws still in. The door was in the front yard. You would have been proud Tommy. And I'm just an old Herk pilot with some woodworking experience.

Did anyone else pick up on that fine Vaughan Titanium hammer. I've had one for a few years now and its absolutely Aces!. It's so light I feel like I'm gonna blow the neck out, one of the best hammers I've got. Don't want to bust it ripping out some old lumber, but.........a tools a tool and meant to be used and that's why we love them. Nice work Tom. Your videos are always cool to watch. Watching the master at work
I kinda wish they'd show how to complete these things. How do you fill in that big gap at the top? What do you cover that post with before you paint it?
Great! Thanks a lot!
How did he get that base plate in the right location and angle to insure the post was plumb? It looked like he just stuck it in there and eye-balled the location and angle. Also, how did he hammer that post onto wet concrete?
@rjcarr316
2 жыл бұрын
It was quick setting concrete that doesn't really compress even when wet. And the base plate is plumb because the top is plumb and the post was cut at right angles.
You figured out the reason why bottom part was rotten, but not why the upper part is rotten. The new post will suffer the same damage sooner or later.
Nice work
I wonder how many of these nit pickers have actually worked as a carpenter.

thought you couldnt use pressure treated studs for this type of constructions...i have a moisture problem in my guest house i just cannt keep humidity out...the wall agains the back yard is just wet all the time...the bottom 7 inches of the whole wall is rotted . the shhet rock and the 2x4 studs the one laying on the slabs and all thw ones standing are rotted...i was gonna use 2x4 treated studs...they told me Big no no at home depot....so i dont really know what to do
@cup_and_cone
7 жыл бұрын
Jesus Hernandez - The reason they said no pressure treated is because it'll twist and shrink...which will pop drywall screws and give you warped walls. All treated wood shrinks and dries funny. You need to fix the moisture problem, not the materials. A 4x6 beam used here is less likely to warp as significant as a 2x4, and it's the only option here.

Why not replace the entire 2 x 4s as well rather than leave a visible cut?
@SenileOtaku
Жыл бұрын
the garage opening may have been a pre-built assembly, and changing the etire 2x4 might have involved replacing the entire garage opening, and having to do whatever mortising the original frame had. The way he did it left as much of the framework intact as possible, avoiding a major reworking.
You always want to primer bare wood. The wood needs to be primed , before caulking. This will prevent moisture from becoming trapped behind the exposed wood.

I consider myself an amateur but even I know a few things were missed here.... that concrete though it is quick drying, chances are the upper level of concrete dried but not the lower...... also they didn't pack the ground in the hole its all loose soil so the post is going to sink in once the weight is put back down... also e measured everything while the joist was lifted up by that temp support... I am pretty sure that once that gets removed, a lot of cracking is going to occur...... again I am an amateur and feel free to correct me but that is what it looks like to me.

I don't think the concrete will sink. It binds with surrounding concrete, not sitting on top of the soil.
@mr.wizeguy8995
7 жыл бұрын
Concrete hardens due to water and temperature fastens curing process which means it was much stronger on deep inside that hole instead top part of it because curing process also generate heat and lower part is surrounded with soil and it will keep much warmer. Looked like that hole was so ramdom shape that new pour will stick to surrounding and also load it has to bear was minor.
@bg147
7 жыл бұрын
I believe the repair was filmed over two days to allow the cement to harden... I would assume. Also, when they were cleaning the rotten wood from the hole, he said they were cleaning all the way down to the footing. Last point, when he lifted, i think he simply took the weight off the post without increasing the height of the opening.

This is a small segment that's been cut out of an episode and trimmed for length. He also used fast setting concrete which has about a 15 minute working time and they vacuumed out the whole before putting it in.

KIcking the bottom of the metal door tracks to verify the post is off the ground? Interesting, top post rot? Could be water capillary action getting into the end grain. Might not be a bad idea to paint the top post end grain first. Why not cut the jambs before pouring the concrete? That post was cut very accurate to fit tight like that, usually takes me couple of tries. I just don't trust someone driving a long screw without predrilling while my hands are close by. Could ended up a bloody mess. Very nice job.
