It's not as easy as some make it sound. There's 8 years of experience behind this video. This is how to replace a golf course green hole plug, which requires a little soil removal, and a little plug cleanup. Stimp is 10.9 this day, 55 degrees, light rain. There's a lot of vacuum in the turf due to recent rains. You should get a feel for how to do it from this video.

after that i press the turf together with my thumbs to close the seam, i use a piece if pvc pipe to roll the plug and green so that the green surface is perfectly smooth, it works like a roller. and obviously water the plug with a bottle of water

as far as knitting the green and plug together I've found that an ice pick works best for me, and i also agree that you should cut cups at full depth, and as long as you can cut at the same proper depth then you should rarely have to adjust height by removing or adding soil, i like to dump the plug and look at its height relative to the green and adjust so that the plug is about 1/4 in above the green and then lift the turf around the plug a bit to match the plug height.

Role the bottom edge of the plug on the inside of your bucket. This will round it a bit to make easier insert and help prevent that sand ring. I also paint the entire cup broom bottom to turf on every hole. The inner plastic sleeve has to be removed every dozen or so time to clean off paint buildup. I work at Shawnee Country Club in Lima, Ohio. The members love the nice fresh white holes everyday.

You forgot the finishing touch....Seaming your hole. Myself, I use a fork to lift the turf around the hole...then step on plug to flush surface and finally take a soft brush to sweep any soil crumbs left behind....Hole will heal within a day or two

Since we're comparing, takes me avg 2.5 min to change a hole, change 18 in less than 1hr 1/2. That's with smoke breaks :)

I like to use a paint scraper to size plug, but spoon? Really? Also I would use a fork to knit edges together for truer roll and to prevent plug drying out (after the rain) 14 yrs experience cutting holes in S Ontario Canada :)

Have a look at igolfcup on the web use this method of changing holes its a lot quicker, and you dont have to dig thousands of holes on the greens, if you have 4 icups on each green, you can throw your hole cutter away regards arthur chambers

Isn't that a little short to be cutting your plugs? Usually the roots on bent grass go atleast 4-5 inches. So you are destroying the roots. You must live in an area where the grass grows back easily.

Seattle = Rain. No roots, no need. Roots don't need to search for hydration.

What are you doing. 1) use a full length cutter, saves time and your roots 2) bents will never live on them greens, soil profile wrong! 3) less watering, Ive seen less thatch on an old English cottage 4) A spoon. Seriously we live in a technological age where spoons wont cut it!! If you want bents, less poa and disease free poa!!!!! with roots that search for water instead of retreating up to the water just below your thatch. You need to water less mate. That was like walking on a mattress!!
