How To Replace a Clicking Ford Fiesta ST Blend Door Actuator

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Recently my Fiesta started making a clicking noise in the dash every time I started the car. As it turns out, this is a common problem with modern Ford and the culprit is the HVAC blend door motor. Apparently the gears within the motor get stripped and what you're hearing is them binding up as they move. Well today I'm going to show you how to fix it.
HVAC Blend Door Motor Actuator: amzn.to/2kcaEUQ
Torx Bit Socket Set: amzn.to/2GD882O
Fine Tooth 1/4" Ratchet: amzn.to/2Lim4Ti
Torx Screw Driver Set: amzn.to/2s1knAN
Big thanks to George De La Torre for tipping me of on the easier method!

Strangely enough unplugging and plugging back in my blend door fixed the issue. I recommend trying it before going through the trouble.

First, this video was incredible, helped me out tremendously and saved me a lot of money! But two things I learned: 1) Like in this video, I replaced the driver side actuator, which controls the mode (Floor, dash, defrost) But the clicking continued. It turned out it was the passenger side actuator behind the glove box that was the culprit. This controls the recirc/outside air function. It's much easier to get to than the driver's side. 2) The replacement part for the DRIVER side mode door needs to have the circuit board INSIDE the old actuator transferred to the new part. The board gives feedback to the body computer where the motor/door is in its travel. The PASSENGER side actuator will NOT have this circuit board because the recirc function just opens and closes the door on that side, there's no in between. I hope my experience helps others!

Very useful additional info! Thank you! Just heard the click of death minutes before typing this and I ran to KZread to see how fucked I am lol. But looks like it’s not as big of a deal as the Fiesta groups make it seem.

is it the same part for the passenger side and the driver side? Mine started doing this, and it sounds like its coming from the passenger side. PLUS, when its on the floor or dash setting the clicking is not there.

Do you have any support for needing to transfer the circuit board? Why would the new replacement part not come with a new circuit board? Haven’t seen anything about that anywhere

  • @ShayneNayNay

@@TMH_Golf in the fiesta there are 2 blend door actuators. One is under the dash, the other is behind the glove box. they are identical in size, shape, and internal components except for the circuit board. 5-PIN under the steering column 2-PIN behind the glove box. If you purchased the wrong part you can swap the circuit board to use the part on the appropriate side.

And if I had not removed a third unrelated screw near the motor that took me ten minutes to find where to replace it, it would have been 20. I’ve had my fiesta st for almost 6 years and 55,000 miles. Just started clicking a couple months ago. Just fixed it. Thanks!! I had to take the blend door actuator apart to line up the gears. I guessed that’s why it has a bunch of clips around it. Took me forever to figure that out.

Just want to add to the comments and say thanks. My 2014 ST has been doing it for over a year, and I was avoiding fixing it. This video convinced me to try it myself and have to say it went exactly like the video. Would highly recommend a similar small ratchet. And for hand loosing the end, and tightening at the beginning, I would suggest using a T25 bit by hand - way easier then trying to turn the screw head. I can't thank you enough!

Replaced my actuator today and I amazed/envious that folks can get this done in less than an hour. Maybe my hands are too large, or the wiring harness in mine is in a different place, but getting the top actuator mounting screw out was torture (rear one wasn't all that easy either). My forearms will be showing the scratches and bruises for a week! That said, good video and agree with the tool of choice being a small 1/4" ratchet. Thanks for a video well done! And yes, an autopsy of the failed actuator showed two teeth sheared off.

I'm going to try and fix this myself too. Thanks for the links. The only problem the review in comments on the part - someone says this part did not fit property, needed modification. I took the car to the dealer today telling them this is exactly what is wrong - they wanted to charge me over 350, PLUS a diagnostic test of 180.00 to prove that was really the issue. - Would of cost me nearly 600 for a 30 dollar part and labour. Rip off.

It worked. Make damn sure you're replacing the right issue. I was able to put my feet on the headrest and get my feed by the brake pedal and see the motor skipping. I have scrawny arms and and rail thin anymore, so I was able to put one arm over the knee airbag under the steering wheel and one arm up from below to work it out with a little ratchet wrench. Great video.

Thank you so much for this super helpful video. I replaced the Blend Door Actuator on my 2014 Fiesta SE. The clicking is gone! For anyone who is interested in DIY, on my 2014 Fiesta SE, there were 3 screws. Because the space is extremely tight, having a right tool makes a huge difference. Your ratchet should as SMALL as possible. Here is another tip. After I inserted the pole (with gears on it) of the actuator into the receiving socket on the car, the screw holes did NOT line up. I started the engine, everything loosened up. I was able to line up the screw holes. Essentially, if something is stuck, do NOT force it.

ESD, thanks a million for putting together this excellent video. I bought the part then visited my Mom and her '14 Fiesta to fix her knocking sound. I replaced the part and... it still knocked. :( Hang on, there's a good ending. First, I wanted to share some learned lessons: (1) it's tight getting to those 2 screws. For the front one, I was able to use a 6" T20 screwdriver by coming in from the front, over the right area of the steering column. (2) the back screw was a little tougher, on my back, looking up, came in from underneath and removed the screw also with the same T20 screwdriver. However, it was more difficult going back in so for the last 1/4" or so I held a T20 hex bit with my right hand coming in from over the top of the steering column while using the left hand to turn a small crescent wrench. (3) Removing the harness was a little tricky. I believe the small red tab can be pulled up, and then slides out. Once out, the harness comes off with a little wiggle. (4) The white post wasn't aligned when I first tried to install the new part. The white post has 7 teeth and one missing tooth so needs to be aligned. I couldn't turn the new white post, but was able to rotate the gear wheel and hole where the post would attach. It's a large 5" gear wheel and I was able to spin it easily with an awl pushing against the teeth (found a couple inches below the hole where the white post needed to go). So, I came here and discovered other people were saying there were more actuators. Fortunately, I reproduced the knocking and tracked it to behind the glovebox. Much, much easier there but it's not the same exact part. It looks the same except it has 2 prongs for the harness and doesn't have an internal board. The glove box easily came out without any tools by pulling the 2 rubber posts on each side towards the middle then rolling the glove box downward. Once the posts were now exposed, the glove box could be easily pulled out completely with a little effort (there's a few plastic clasps that are holding it in). With it out, there's a great view of the failed actuator, and the 2 T20 screws were easily removed. However, I now had a working driver-side actuator. I opened both the driver-side one up, and the passenger side one. There's about 7 fragile little clasps all around them that can be gently pried while pulling up to remove the tops. Each has 3 plastic internal gear wheels, and fortunately they're the same parts. The failed one had a plastic tooth that had broken away so I replaced it with the same wheel from the working unit. Put everything back together and... VICTORY! Woohoo!!! Thanks again! Hope this helps someone else!

Thanks for a very helpful video! My 2014 Fiesta SE blows cold air, but not very strong, even with the fan turned up all the way. I think it’s an issue with the blend door actuator and I’m going to try this technique.

Bongo Dave In keeping with the idea of eliminating the simplest problems first, I’ll try that before tackling the blend door actuator. Mine’s not making noise so maybe that’s it. Thanks!

for your info, there are 3 door actuators on Fiesta: 604-400 Mode actuator (driver side), 604-251 Air Inlet (behind the glove case) and the 604-322 Temperature actuator (at the left of glove case near controls)

Great video. My daughter’s car has the same issue. It’s a pain in the rump to get to. But this video is super helpful. I put a tiny piece of tape over each actuator bracket mount hole, so that putting the screws in, they would be less likely to fall out. Any help you can get, especially one handed up under the dash. I really felt like a tiny bit of expansion foam just in the bracket holes, left to dry and then drill a tiny hole in the foam, would have helped hold the screws in place better while reattaching.

I removed the faulty blend door actuator and plugged in the new one before installing. I then started the car to test that the new one worked before putting it in place. By doing this, I discovered that the actuator gear had moved beyond the range that would allow me to install it. I had to restart the car and immediately stop it once the actuator gear started to move so that gear stopped in range to allow me to install it.
