    Excellent Steve…….Needed to change the GU10 in an Aurora EN-DLM981X but found I’d lost the leaflet. Tried umpteen ways to remove the bezel but didn’t want to break anything so got nowhere. Found your magic video and got the job done in less than 10 minutes……and that included going to get the replacement bulb from the larder. Thanks mate. : - ))

    You have saved my sanity Steve! All four lights in my ensuite failed within a year of my loft conversion. I couldn’t work out how to open up the to get to the bulb (I have the vicious, break-your-knuckle kind -don’t ask how I know!! 😳☝🏼) After watching your brilliant video, turns out I just needed brute strength to turn the stuck covers anti-clockwise. Simples! So I now have light in my shower room - 4 years later. 💡

    I'll mention here in the comments that some you need to replace the whole fitting rather than the bulb. I spent the best part of an hour including watching this video to figure out how to take the bulb out of my bathroom light. Went to the manufacturer website and it turns out you can't. You replace the whole light fitting!

    Thank you for taking the time to comment. I have had a few people contact me to explain that they cannot see how to remove the lamp. On some newer LED units the lamp is integrated into the unit so it is not removable. Where possible, I try to avoid installing this type of unit. LED isn't quite what they made out it would be and there are many units failing. With this in mind, it's so much easier to install units with replaceable lamps. Thank you for your feedback. I'm pleased that you resolved your issue. Kind regards Steve :)

    Very informative video on how to replace MR-16 type bulbs in recessed Downlight fixtures. When replacing a halogen bulb with an LED version to be used with a dimmer, you might have problems with LED MR-16 low-voltage bulbs flickering at low light levels. This is usually resolved by replacing lamp transformer with one rated from 0 volts to a higher voltage since the overall load on the transformer is considerably lower with LEDs. Older transformers require a minimum load around 50 or more watts which is why an LED bulb will flicker at low light levels.

    Hi Steve, Thanks for your Video, I think it's resolved something in my head in that one of our kitchen lights is not working possibly because the transformer has failed especially as when I swap it for another in the room the non working "bulb" works again so I'll look into sourcing one of these It's an Enlite EN-PL06B/30. Also (a very minor point) you are softly spoken and the bits that are spliced in afterwards are much louder. Oh, and although I knew what to expect, the spring mechanism still whacked me when I was taking one of them out!!!

  • @JPSElectricalServicesBristol

    @JPSElectricalServicesBristol

    Stephen Humphreys, thank you for taking the time to comment. There is a possibility that the thread is aluminium and could have stripped due to being over tightened. If it’s just a seized thread and a halogen light bulb is being used then you could turn the power off, remove the unit from the ceiling completely and then after turning the power back on ,run the light up to temperature. Turn the power off again and using something that will protect your hands from the heat try unscrewing the thread again. The heat from the halogen light bulb could be enough to make the unit expand and allow the thread to turn. If this does not work then you may need to cut your losses and source a replacement. Please let me know how you get on. Kind regards Steve :)

    In my bathroom there's one like you showed above the shower (as you said is common in most bathrooms) and on the other side one with no glass protector that's attached to a rod shaped transformer. It was like that when we moved in just not sure if there should be a glass protector on that one as well to protect the wires from steam and condensation

    Hi, Thank you for taking the time to comment. I would always suggest that an appropriately rated lamp/enclosure is installed within a bathroom where there is steam, water and humidity. If the light is above 2.25metres then technically, this is what is referred to as outside of the zones so it doesn't present a safety risk. That being said, if it's open to the elements expected to be present in a bathroom then it's not suitable to the environment that it has been installed within. I hope this helps. kind regards Steve :)

We have "ENLITE EN-BZE8" which has a "bayonette" type bezel, which comes off easily, but i can`t work out how the actual bulb comes out?. Also, do you know if these are the mains power, or low voltage variants?. We have 4 in our bathroom, and one has started intermitent flashing on and off, could it be a transformer type, and the transformer is faulty?.

    Thanks for taking the time to comment. Some of the newer versions of a recessed downlight are now integrated units. This means that the lights inside are not replaceable. If you go through to my website and complete the contact form, you can email me a photo and I’ll be able to assist you further. Kind regards Steve www.jpselectricalservices.co.uk

    Thanks Steve. We have the low voltage ‘pin’ type in our kitchen. They are so temperamental. I think the transformers are ok as when I wiggle them the light does work. You drop it back in the recess fitting and it often goes off after 10 mins or so. Could It be the pin type light. I wondered if I could change the config to the other version (insert and twiest type) or would the voltages be all wrong? Thanks if you can help. Todd

    Thank you for taking the time to comment. If you're having issues with a light that uses a transformer then I would definitely start looking at replacing them for a 230V unit and GU10 lamp. They're far more reliable. How many are in the room? With regards to the intermittent issue you are having, sometimes the lamp holder wires fail, especially where halogen lamps have been in use. In this case you would need to replace the lamp holder ***Remember that the electricity supply should be isolated if you attempt this task yourself*** This link will provide you with reference to the part I am referring to. You can get these at all decent electrical wholesalers and I would recommend that you try a local independent establishment before using the chains such as shown in the link. www.toolstation.com/spare-lampholder/p99286?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw2a6wBhCVARIsABPeH1t2f_UrGIIgk54in2mips_hhPTvxcqtoqmDHwj4bBSGxbwaJVlgNLsaAlHeEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds I hope this helps. All very well sat at a table and you can grip the holder, what do you do when the holder is stuck in the recess so you can't grip and twist? We've tried a sucker to grip the bulb as we push it but the holder just twists with it.

If you are unsure then please get in touch with your local electrician and they will be happy to advise you of how best to proceed. Yes, can confirm those springs do bite. Puzzled about people saying LEDs save energy over halogen. My kitchen has 8 12V 50W halogens. 400W at 12V, does that not convert roughly to 20W at 230 volts? Eight LEDs at about 5W each is double what the halogens use, or have I got the maths wrong? Appreciate the LEDs run much cooler.

    Hi, thanks for taking the time to comment. You are correct. Since creating this video, integrated downlights have become a very common application. Personally, wherever possible, I try to avoid using them. LED lighting still isn’t as great as some manufacturers make out. This becomes an issue when an integrated lamp fails because the homeowner isn’t usually able to replace the entire unit because it’s connected to the electrical cables. A lamp however, can be easily replaced by most… when they know how 🥰👍🏼 Kind regards Steve :)

    Dunelm Video thanks for taking the time to comment. Those clips are savage aren’t they! The plan should be to tilt the light and bring one spring clip out first and then the other one. Take your time and once the spring clip becomes visible, hold it back so that it cannot spring shut. With regards to the lamp holders, they can fail due to excessive use with halogen lamps. Pop to your local TLC Wholesaler and ask for their upgrade version. I hope this helps, please let me know how you get on. Kind regards Steve :)

    Thank you for taking the time to comment. With the light bulb connected to the light and pushed up into its housing, the semi circular clip sits between the light bulb and the bezel (outer surround) of the light. The circular spring clip will be angled outwards on each end. This is so that you can pinch the clip (angle facing towards you) closed so that it will slot into place. I hope this helps. Since creating this video and LED lights evolving, many recessed downlights have been manufactured in a way that integrates the unit and the lamp. This means that if the light fails, the whole unit needs to be replaced. I really do dislike these units but even I opt to install them on occasions where the installation dictates that particular design is the best option. I hope this helps. Kind regards Steve :)

    @@JPSElectricalServicesBristol omg thank you so much!! Ive already done smth wrong.. I took out the whole fitting out of the ceiling🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ then didn’t know how to take the bulb out. My question is - after I put the fitting back in, now there’s a visible gap between the ceiling and the fitting, is it ok to leave it like that? Or should I buy some sealant and cover it? Thank you for taking the time to comment. If your units are using the old style halogen lamps then there is a possibility that the unit itself has become warped which is preventing the light from twisting. If you would like to email me then I might be able to identify the type of unit and confirm the method of removal required. I hope this helps. Kind regards Steve :)
