How To Repaste a Graphics Card
See how to repaste a graphics card step-by-step. If your card is running a little too hot, it might help to repaste it, especially if it's a couple of years old or older. See how to take a graphics card apart, how to remove the old thermal paste, and how to apply the new paste. Also, see the paste I recommend in this video.

Spreading the thermal paste is definitely the way to go! Ive tried all other methods online (e.g. pea sized drop, x pattern, straight line pattern) and all led to high temps, and uneven coating. Glad to see someone teaching others to repaste using the spread method!
My msi started blue screening my pc 6 months ago spiking very hot, so I did this and it now runs cooler than it ever has. Under heavy load it never goes above 70 degrees.

your voice is so calm, soothing.
Great video. One note. According to FTC (The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (MMWA) passed in 1975), the "warranty void if removed" stickers are illegal. If your graphics card will not work after taking it apart, burden of proof that you broke your card is on manufacturer. They can't void warranty simply because you took it apart.

Eh, no. Voiding a warranty for removing that sticker is illegal. Taking apart your item isn't illegal, and yes the burden of proof is on the company to prove you broke it in violation of the warranty, but that also has to be described in the warranty terms or contract. And often there's ways built-in to the product that can be declared "warranty voiding activities" under a term agreement. I'm just saying, that law is meant to primarily protect consumers, but wording also both ways to protect companies from chucklefucks from dumping water on their shit and demanding a new GPU.
Thank you for this video. I was curious about how the thermal paste amount differed between CPUs & GPUs. Also, if spreading was recommended or not. Sidenote, your voice is very soothing and it almost put me to sleep haha.

Hi, first of all thanks for the video! I would just like to ask whether it's safe to buy a repasted used GPU (might be a stupid question) should I be worried that it might have been done badly?
@EasyPcRepairs
2 жыл бұрын
A repasted GPU isn't really a good or bad sign. It's probably at least a one year old card for the owner to want to repaste it. It could be a sign that he cares about his components, or it could be that it was running a little too hot when he was using it. Could he have repasted it badly? Yes, but it's unlikely as it's fairly simple to do.

It will be cool if you do this method. But you will have to flash BIOS as the miners mostly leave mining BIOS on Graphics Card so it woun't perform as well as it should in games until you flash it.
Where are the before and after temp results? That's the whole point in reapplying thermal paste.

Do we really need to spread the thermal paste? Most thermal pastes come with plastic spatula thingys.

It's best to spread the paste so that you know it has covered the chip well. Some thermal pastes do come with a spreader, but not all.
Should i do spread method or pea sized drop

Spread method is generally the best. That way you know the paste has spread out correctly.

its better to spread the paste or just put a drop in the middle ?
@EasyPcRepairs

It's better to spread the paste, as then you'll know it's been spread correctly instead of just hoping that it has spread well after putting the heatsink and GPU together.
is it really necessary to make the paste exactly like the square shape? Kinda hard...
@EasyPcRepairs

The better the paste is spread, the cooler the card will be.

Ya his voice made me get into v d again
I dont usually comment on these things unless i have a question, but i find it weird that some people are saying to not do the spread method as it will leave scratches and such, but yet you have to wonder... why would the companies sell their pastes with spatulas? How come so many youtubers and enthusiasts use the spread method?
@EasyPcRepairs
4 ай бұрын
The paste doesn't always spread that well if you rely on it spreading by just pushing on the heatsink. Most likely it will be fine doing it that way, but to guarantee that the paste is spread correctly, it's best to do it yourself.
Do I need to spread that thermal paste or just apply a dot in the middle and let the heatsink spread it?
@EasyPcRepairs

@@EasyPcRepairs I am also having a problem, I recently bought a thermal paste called STARS-700 for my RX 570, previously the temps got to 80 C max now they get all the way up to 90 C and the GPU gives a bluescreen or shuts down PC due to overheat, But I didn't screw anything up, I did everything the right way, didn't damage any part of the GPU, But the thermal paste I bought was kinda like hard lime water or something like that, As if there's a layer of dust on it, It was hard, Does that mean that the thermal paste I bought is outdated or what?
@EasyPcRepairs
4 жыл бұрын
Thermal paste will go hard over time. So it could be that the paste you have is old. Hard paste can affect your GPU temps for sure. The MX-4 paste I was showing in the video lasts for 8 years without going off so I highly recommend it.

Gotta disagree about spreading the paste with a litnfree cloth, how is any air supposed to work it's way out from between the 2 surfaces, I would put a decent blob of thermal paste right in the centre of the chip and gently lowered the cooler down onto it, twisting slightly whilst pushing down, this will create a wave of paste that pushes the air out in front of it.
@EasyPcRepairs

If the paste is spread out first, you can guarantee that it is spread correctly every time. Any air will be squashed out when the GPU meets the heatsink on reassembling the graphics card.

Nice work. And you look very tidy, but use mineral oils for cleaning not cloth. Just spray the shit out of that GPU and clean it with tooth brush. Hangers
DON'T SPREAD THE PASTE USING ANYTHING, CLOTH OR YOUR FINGERS!. It can seriously damage your cards cooling performance by leaving micro scratches and not completing the seal between the card and the heatsink. Just put your thermal paste onto the gpu and put the heatsink back on. The seal between the two will happen automatically and putting the heatsink on will cause the thermal paste to spread on its own.
