This is the true spirit of DIY. Is it perfect? No. Was it fun? Yes. Did you learn something new? Yes. A lot of us drive cars that is worth fixing up, but not worth the money to have a professional fix up. This is just the reality of life for most people.

I have to give you full credit. I do metal finish for restorations BUT on a cheap car, what I learned in 40 years of work was that you need to match the repair to the car. I do a '3 year repair' for cars that I am certain will not make it beyond that time (usually because the owner will kill the car). I got over all snobbishness of a quality repair when a guy brought me an old Volvo 122 that had crappy body work from a PO. I asked him what was the longest he had ever owned a vehicle (in perspective, I have a 1970 Land Rover I bought in 1989 - and own to this day). He said he sells them in 2 years or less. He wanted it looking nice, painted inside and out (to 'look' like a full restoration he said). Well, 2K later and it left with the cheapest smoothed over rust repairs (but great paint) I ever did. He called me three months later and said he crashed the car. He got full insurance payment for it. Sometimes cheap is okay. Sometimes "good enough" is okay. Knowing when those times are takes experience. Not everyone has a shop and metal working tools - and not every car is a restoration project requiring metal finish. So - full points and credit for what you did here. You matched your skills to the car to reality; and made the car look better.

Wow....great job for never having done that before. Had that paint matched that would've turned out really well. I think that given the times we live in, and the fact that when it comes to auto work, it seems like EVERYONE is getting screwed (and the job STILL isn't getting done properly).....that we're all learning that if we take the time to learn and invest in some tools, we can do this on our own. Even if we screw it up a few times while we're learning. I just learned how to replace a clutch, and that's nowhere NEARLY as complicated as I thought. DIY is the way to go. Buy a cheap project car like what you have, and that way if you mess it up while you're learning, you don't feel bad. Anyway, great video, and thanks for posting.

I have a '98 s-10. Rust hole in the bottom rear corner of the cab. Wire brushed the rust, and filled the hole with expanding foam. Sawed of the excess with a steak knife after it dried. Sanded it flat. Then I applied 2 coats of bondo. Sanded flat. I can kick it as hard as I want, and the bondo didn't even crack. Solid as a rock, and water-proof. BullyBilly.

Wax can take the clear coat off. Then just get the right color. Spray it again. Clear again. Good job. I think it will always rust again. Cut the cost down just use regular Bondo. Don't cut away as much as you did. Just take the bubbles off leave the rust behind.. spray rust restore and leave it two days. Then apply mesh with jbweld behind to bring closer to outer surface. Then just apply regular Bondo. Prime leave for two weeks to harden of course do this in above 70° weather. After two weeks sand put on finishing putty sand with 1000 grit then paint. Leave first coat for four hours. Then second coat. Then clear. Wallah it will last for two years. Rust will come bay. Because there is just around the outside. Light sanding. Reapply paint

Depending on the age of the vehicle & how much it had been exposed to the sun, the new paint may not have matched the old due to paint fade, even if the color code for the new paint was correct. I had the same color issue with a touch-up pen that I used on my old car (at 8yrs), even after I washed the whole vehicle. I wonder if applying a new clear coat to the repair area & waxing the surrounding existing finish would have helped(?). That aside, great video, & I appreciated the tip about the fiberglass mat. I went with metal mesh & the fg cloth instead; just had to clean up cloth strands, but def not so frustrating. 👍

On my Chevy van big rust on lower under doors rocker panels. I got some ABS black plastic 6 in and ran it through a table saw cut it in half. Two pieces the length from tire to tire. Drilled out resessed holes in top and Screwed in self tappers.. Black Caulk the top. Underneath I bent 5 bolts connected to anything. It's ugly Rusty mess but it worked and it will never rust there again. Oh I forgot I used old engine oil in a spray bottle mixed with some paint thinner and sprayed all the underneath before I started. For other projects, If you want free metal just find a commercial metal shop dumpster. If you get lucky you'll find the primed and painted with the plastic film overlay.

Reminds me of the time I repaired several holes in my muffler with coke cans! Thought I was pretty smart until the inspection guy looked under the car and said I couldn't do that! Still not sure why...

Till the bondo bubbles under the paint and eventually end up with a bigger hole than what you started with. But if it's a pos beater vehicle that isn't going to last more than a year or 2 than it's worth it.

@@dittyfpv7615 the bondo bubbles if it's not sealed and gets wet or if the rust behind was not treated properly. If he used fiberglass based bondo then it will have a better chance of holding up but in the professional automotive repair world, filler should never be used to hide rust ever.

If you’re going to put aluminium against steel make sure there is a barrier between them. If you don’t you’ll get Galvanic corrosion. But hey, do whatever you want.
