HOW TO REPAIR LOOSE JOINTS on a wobbly chair
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This week in the shop Trena dismantles and repairs an old rocking chair with a few battle scars. She also flies to Toronto and visits the Royal Ontario Museum while she's there, checking out some furniture that is hundreds of years old.
Thanks for watching. If you enjoy my video and would like to say thanks you can now buy me a coffee! This will just help me to be supported while I continue to make these videos for everyone to enjoy. Cheers to all my wonderful subscribers! www.buymeacoffee.com/JohnsFur...

WOW! Trena, as you know, this old rocker belonged to my great-grandmother. She loved that chair and used it daily for many decades. I'm sure that when it got loose and wobbly at times, one of her sons would do a little patch job just to keep it going. Of course, those little "repairs", while keeping the chair functional for my great-grandmother, did no justice to the chair and in the long run, contributed to its problems. Thank you so much for doing such an amazing job on this old beauty, which I estimate to be around 90-100 years old. My great-grandmother would have been thrilled with the end result. I'm sure she would have been deeply moved by the transformation. Your hard work, attention to detail and obvious love of old furniture, is greatly appreciated. I am proud to hand this now lovely beauty down as an heirloom piece to my daughter. Many thanks, Trena.

As a furniture repairman I often get requests for fixing wobbly chairs like this. Customers are always wanting an easy and cheap fix. Sorry. Not happening.
Trena takes a chair repaired by a blacksmith, and restores it as an expert cabinetmaker. Top class , Trena as usual and thank you for a wonderful demonstration.

Really enjoyed this and learnt loads! I like the minimal commentary and very clear shot angles. The shop and museum sequences were a unexpected pleasure too! Thanks for sharing.
She amazes me when she brings out the hammer and tools to take furniture apart the creaks and cracks, yet the victim survives to be another beautiful piece of antique furniture. As usual.

Nice work. I wish my wobbly old joints could be repaired that easily. I'm getting old.
The patience, vision of craftsmen of times past are hard to imagine! Some of those pieces had to take thousands? of man hours plus skills we don't have!! Keep honoring our history!! Thanx!!

Wow! Loved the Museum visit you did showing off all of old/vintage furniture. It was stunning admiring the craftsmanship that went into making each one of those pieces and trying to image the hours it took to make them by hand. Really appreciate you sharing that. Your skills at restoring that rocker was amazing from beginning to that gorgeous end. From the problems it came in with to your love and care of repairing and restoring it to it's former old glory was amazing to watch.

The effort you put in each project makes you a true artist.
This project is like where many cynics would easily utter, "Cor blimey you could've built [buy] a brand new one in the time [money] spent repairing that tired old thing!" and you most probably could. Then again, you can't put a price-tag on preserving a piece of history and old craftsmanship can you? So kudos to the owner. What a stunner of a precious beautiful piece, and whomever rocked herself away on that thing for decades on end in front of the fireplace certainly got her money's worth and a lot more. So well done once again Trena👏👏👏
Your attention to detail is astounding. Just the amount and variety of plugs and dowels you use is remarkable. Kudos.

This will probably be an odd comment, but you might see the relevance referring to 14:12. My best friend, my father, died in 2021. I was his caretaker for a few years before he passed. But, it was such a joy learning from him those last few years, great conversations. BUT, at 14:12 of this video, I gave a huge smile. Something so small yet so significant to me. My dad taught me that little trick, some 60 years ago. Funny, he taught me as a child and it continued my entire life. Thanks for allowing me to reminisce on this fine morning, and for bringing a few tears. I always love your videos.

That was one helluvan ornate chair! Never seen one like it before, and not likely to see another, either. It probably took as long to repair it as it did to actually make the chair in the first place. Katherine, the owner is really happy with it. It will last her family another hundred years, or even more if there’s someone like you around to keep it in good condition! ❤️😊🇦🇺🦘

Really beautiful examples of mid-century Scandinavian modern furniture in that shop in Toronto. Rosewood! Teak! Simple, perfectly scaled elegant curves and straightforward designs. The real stuff. I cringe to think what those pieces must cost these days.

...And that short section of 18th century English furniture really gets one's blood racing. It would certainly pair nicely with that tall case clock and clock face restoration you did a couple of years ago.

Love working with oak furniture. So forgiving when matching stain and color.
Love the fact that at 4:54 you are using a hive tool as a pry-bar! Recently have seen a lot of woodworkers "discovering" hive tools and their uses- I carry a different model for pry/wedge operations at my shop as well! I have bees so the tools were around- and have found a useful place in my wood/metal shop!

Man, I used to go to Bungalow all the time! For those not in the know, they have vintage clothing on the main floor, along with some new items and some vintage housewares. Most of the furniture is downstairs, though they'll sometimes have a piece or two in the window. Guff is another store that specializes in MCM furniture pieces, though they're a bit out of the way on Queen St. East, just past the Don Valley Parkway. Well worth the trek if you're looking for some great furniture or house accessories like lamps, mirrors and artwork. Sometimes I miss living in Toronto, but then I go out onto my front porch and look at the Atlantic Ocean and realize I'm fine where I am. Thanks for sharing!
