Hi there. I cant see my ext hard drive. When I go to disk management the drive is split into 2 parts. 1 half is unallocated. If I follow your instructions I'm worried that I might re format the part that is already allocated?

None of this worked at all for me...it's a brand new drive...no light to say it's powered up, no trace of it either in WD Utilities program or in diskmgmt.msc :(

ah, it was the USB cable that came with it...had to use my mobile broadband cable

This was helpful. However, I am running 2 external WD drives, a 1 TB and a @TB. Both are currently recognized by my PC. Lately, one will be a 'no show', and I think it may either be the cable , or hub. I downloaded the WD Utility, but how do I access both WD drives with the utility? Only one 'auto shows'

Is there a way to recover what's on the wd hard drive without formatting it and losing all my holiday photos

i recently updated my dell computer windows 10 and for some reason my hard drive failed and the computer wont boot. i replaced the hard drive and reinstalled my windows and im using the old drive with an external case to try and get my files back but whenever i plug it in the pc it freezes. and when i take it out before the computer goes back to normal. i cant even access command prompt or disk management. i really need help to recover this drive.

OK, now...I did this before and it helped me restore my hard drive. But although the same thing has happened--my computer doesn't read/recognize my external hard drive, I followed your last instruction on the video, except when I get into disk management, I don't see the unallocated file reference. I see instead "Disk 1 Unknown Not Initialized." Can you help. I don't understand what that means. Do I need to "initialize" something?

Is there a way to readd the WD password protection capability after formatting? I followed the process from this video, and the drive shows up in my pc's file system now, but it isn't recognized by the WD apps, Security or Drive Utilities. I bought this drive for the password protection

Hi...my WD Passport gets hanged whenever I connect it to my PC. I downloaded the utility showed by in the video but the utility also got hanged up. Can you suggest any other way to get the data from my WD My Passport.

Hello mate i found this really helpful but my problem still exists - can you let me know if you read this please? The WD utilities provided me two good results for the 2 scans from the top ( did not try the 3rd yet.) However, in disk manager, my rive is not formatted, yet i have images on there i need to recover. It was working perfectly fine yesterday and now its now. Unfortunately I deleted the images off my laptop, because I thought they were safe on the HD. i cant find a way to get in, but I am certain they are in there because there is not 1 full TB avail when I check the storage on it.

For some reason mines split in two, disk 1 partition 2 with 3725 gb but I can’t do anything to it and another 127mb that I could do this all too and I still can’t access the other 3725gb. Anything you can do to help?

It's useful until you get to the step where i can't see my external drive in the "WD drive untilities" and want to get a recovery on my files. Whats the solution then ?

This seemed to work, that is that it shows up with the name and letter i assigned it and i can open it. One question, how do i change the name? I named it "external drive" but now i realise i have multiple external drive and would like to name it the model name of the drive instead. Do i just start over with the steps in the video?

Hi, I have been using my Hard drive on a Macbook, but now I have switched to windows but it doesn't recognize my WD passport, so I have followed your tutorial video without formatting just assigning a letter to my hard disk, but this is didn't solve the problem so I have tried to use the hard drive on my Macbook but I have an error message asking me to format the disk, which I did not to avoid losing all my files. So now I can't use (access my files) my hard drive either on my MacBook or windows, but I'm afraid if I format the disk I will lose all my files that are saved on the hard disk. it's crazy! "This PC" couldn't detect my "My Book". I called WD support but they suggested that I try a data recovery software and then format my external hard disk. I tried it out but surprise surprise, it didn't work. I kept on looking around until I fell on this video. All I had to do was download the WD Drive Utilities and it worked. Thanks man! I liked the info, but on my computer running widows10 I get a message that I need to initialize disk1 before disk management will work, when I try and initialize I then get an error stating that disk management is not up to date. I tried refreshing and restating computer, no effect. Any suggestions?

Thanks for sharing. My "Smart Status" failed, and my "Quick Drive Test" failed as well. What do I do now? I have only used my drive once; and I stored it away. Now I need it to store more photos and it is telling me that I need to format the drive... which will delete all of my photos that have previously been stored... how can I get my photos off of this thing before the formatting? This makes no sense at all, the purpose of me getting this external drive was to store my photos and now I cant even get to them, on top of me possibly having them deleted forever because it is saying that I need to format. i bought wd external hard 6 yrs ago but 2 years before we change our house and i put this in some briefcase but after 2 yrs today i just found. now i try to use it its just blink but not deduct on laptop not showing . what should i do ?

I SERIOULY can not thank you enough!!!! I was having issues even detecting My Passport. Couldn't do anything with it, except that it made a nice blue LED lighted coaster that cost me $100. Just tried it with a WD My book essential. When opening WD Drive Utilities it only shows: Attach a supported WD drive. The My book essential is ON, light blinking and connected trough a USB 3 port to my laptop. But it doesn't read it apparently. Any tips?

Thanks for this video, I was able to see that the drive is still "alive" but not showing under devices and drives. Any idea what to do if the hard drive shows up in Disk Manager but all of the options except "delete volume" are greyed out? It's an old external HDD and shows an "EFI System Partition" and doesn't show "NTFS" under the partition, just "healthy" and its size.

I have a wierd problem. Connected a new hard drive with more storage. Formatted it and it would show both but i had to select which one to use at a time, chose my new one and wanted to move all games i could from system to the new hard drive. It only moved 2 small ones and refused to move more with error message dispite tons of free space. Ps4 started freezing and eventually unplugged it. turning it back on kept freezing and kept restarting it and now it works again but wont recognize new hard drive. Will recognize old one and as long as the new hard drive isnt plugged in it runs fine. had to repair old hard drive but wont recognize new one still, plugged it into pc and that wont recogize it either. HELP!

After downloading the whole file needed for installation, my external turned to esd. Then, I turned to back to usb. Suddenly, all my files in usb are missing. I think they are gone. @@markuscooper3541 I figured it out. I took a chance and just deleted the volume. After that I had the option to format the drive and I was in business. Thanks for responding.

How do I recover my data before reformatting the drive? When I go to disk management it says that I need to initialize a disk before I can access it, but if I do that I will lose all my data. Also, when I plug in the drive, it doesn’t assign a drive letter. I really need to recover my data but how is that possible when the disk isn’t initialized?

So, i have data on it, i had to travel and took my drive with me.. been using it no issues until today. Plugged it in, i hear it spinning, a tiny bit of discomforting clicking.. I installed the WD Drive Utilities app you mentioned and linked to... I ONCE saw it show up in the WD Utilities, but it said 0 bytes. Not comforting... And i kind of need this data. Any suggestions? Im hoping someone can help me. I have a external drive that works on my linux pc aswell as other devices such as straight into my tv. It will not come up on my windows 11 machine. Ive tried everything in this video and nothing. the system bleeps to recognise the harddrive being plugged in but no way of actually viewing it, it also has a light on the drive indicating its getting power. Yes the usb ports work. Have tested with other drives. The harddrives formatted to NTFS which i done on the linux machine.

I followed all the steps which you said but the "New Simple Volume" option is not selectable. Help me out with this !!!

So I am having different scenario where it does not show up as NTFS but it shows up listed under Primary Partition. Whenever right clicking, the options for Change Drive Letter and everything else are all greyed out except for "Help"

HELPPPP!! my WD passport for mac had a password set for my mine and not when I plug it in it brings up the unlocked which I then have to double click and it prompts me to enter my password then it unlocks But it won't open to let me enter my password what can I do?

Can I do this if my external hard drive is detected but not opening? I tried doing the chkdsk command on CMD and my computer crashes. The stage 1 is stuck on loading. Please. I need answer to fix this.
