Thanks for showing an easy and effective way to reattach trim pieces. I have already been using the 99.9% isopropy alcohol for cleaning, but, for some reason, I thought the GM trim adhesive came only in black, which has to be applied very carefully, since every error on a light surface is obvious and hard to clean off. Glad to learn that a clear version is also available, and that by using the proper technique, it will set in 30 minutes or so. This was a very well planned and produced video to help others deal with a common problem on older vehicles.

As a ceramic tile installer and repairman, for 30 years, I have found, when adhesive starts failing, it's failing under the entire length of the trim. Much easier to gently remove the whole trim and glue the entirety. If keeping the vehicle, you can order new trim in pairs, new trim and new adhesive will last 20 years. By just fixing one spot, don't be surprised if the glue fails in multiple spots, within a short period.

What would suggest for 25+ year old car and new trim parts are not available.

@@oz1141 I first would check to see if there are automotive clubs that routinely meet to celebrate the model of car that you're trying to get new trim parts for. Is it domestic or foreign? You're probably not the first person that has needed parts for that model. Join like-minded people in these clubs and you'll find collectors that have NOS parts for sale. NOS parts are "new old stock" that have never been used, brand new in the box trim pieces that may have never seen the light of day. You may have looked everywhere and not found what you need, but some guy in Florida or France is sitting on 50 pieces wondering how he can turn his merchandise into cash.

So glad I found this video. A friend told me to use 3M double-sided tape. That worked for a couple of years but after this unusually cold winter, I now have to do it again and it is much worse than I started out with. Thank you!

Good vid. Couldve also used 3m double side aumotive emblem tape if your doors had em previously. Mine do so watch out for that people. If yours has glue go with the glue unless you're reinstalling everything

Is that glue going to clean off if you are to remove them in the future?

What kind of glue.

My wife just backed into a gravel island and tore up the exterior trim, would I be able to just hammer it back on or should I get a full repair? (I was able to temporarily(I assume) attatch it with a hammer, but I'm not sure how many bumps it will take for it to fall off again)

I was using black 3M tape to re secure them on my 01 GMC Yukon but after 21 years the molding is way past saving they care cracking and have to go 😢 replacements are insanely expensive $200-$300 for each of 4 doors 😮

There's a rubber strip between my trim and the door which looks like it may be problematic for glue. The rubber strip has grooves in it like it is meant to anchor to the trim but won't anchor anymore to the bent out section. Any advice?

That same position door trim is coming off with just a curl at both ends (1”) . Would you suggest a heat gun used moderately to ease the curl out before adhering? Nice video

You won't need to heat the trim. The adhesive has dried out. Very gently, insert a plastic knife under the trim at the drooping edge and push under the entire length. It should pop away from the metal door, freely. If you heat the trim, you may stretch it, making it non-reuseable. The secret to reusing the trim, is to clean ALL the old glue off with alcohol, so the trim lies flat. Then, use fresh glue and paint tape (to hold up the trim, while the adhesive sets).

Where can I buy a trim like that, maybe a little wider.

Acetone it the primary ingredient in nail polish remover (unless you live in California). It is not normally paint friendly. While there are some paints that resist acetone, I’m not aware of any that are used on cars. If that is your only choice, be very careful on where you put it. Most automotive stores have a tar removal solvent (often in a spray can) that you could try if you cannot get the alcohol.
