How to Repair a Plaster Mold

In this video I demonstrate how I repair a broken plaster mold. The same process can be used to create a plaster mold to cast ceramics to be used as a mold for glass work. If you enjoyed this video, please hit "Like" and subscribe to my channel. Thanks, Capt Mike

    @@shreya1959 If it was a large repair that could be the problem. As in mold broke in two. I have had good luck with the repairs. Make sure the mold being repaired is well hydrated. Before you use glue, test a piece of dry plaster by gluing it with wood glue. Never tried that, but it might work.

    Liz, if the hands are made of plaster you can repair it with super glue. Just be careful not to use too much as it tends to get everywhere. As far as adding the new hand, if it fits nicely in the grouping just glue it in place. Rehydrating something like you have might be problematic.

    What I would do is soak the mold to be repaired, but leave it in the water. Next mix up your plaster and as soon as you get it mixed properly, take the mold out of the water and apply the fresh plaster. It might help to have someone help you to get the reair done as quickly as possible. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

    Is there any way to clean plaster out of a plaster mold I bought this stuff called perfect plaster made from molds and casting and assumed that I could use it inside a plaster mold and now it's stuck and I can't get the little details out or pieces and I really want to keep this mold

  • @CaptMike

    Christine, I don't think there is any way to get the plaster out of the details. I know that when I repare a plaster mold I hydrate the broken mold and glue it together with fresh plaster. That is about what happened when you put plaster into your mold. Sometimes you ruin a mold. I fired a plaster mold once thinking it was ceramic and it busted all up. So......sometime it just happens.

How could I salvage this mold? Could I dig out the crumbling parts and add plaster? I’ve tried to cast it twice but it won’t release from the brown nasty spots. I really need this mold to work.

    Jessica, If the mold cannot be replaced I hate to suggest a fix, however, If it was mine I would dig out the offending spot (assuming it was not on a highly detailed part of the mold and make a cast. In the past I have done that and then sculpted the excess clay from the depression. Remember, you can always remove clay, but adding it is difficult. Wish I could see a photo of the spot you are talking about, maybe then I would have a better idea.

    Capt Mike my thought was to dig it out as well. It is a ring of a large Christmas tree and I don’t think I could find it anywhere. It also happens to be the first one and without it I can’t add the rest of them. Luckily it is the underside of the tree so I think if I could get it to release I could smooth it out and it wouldn’t be noticeable. Is it possible to add plaster to a mold? It’s sticking in the spots that are brown and crumbling from the mouse urine. 🤦🏻‍♀️

    Was your owl made of plaster? I'm trying to make a mold from tiles I've made (one is bisque fired white special clay, the others leather-hard white special clay). I've poured plaster on them, but one mold broke on release. I'd like to save it as the tiles are quite intricate. Any advice appreciated!

  • @CaptMike

    @CaptMike

    Was it the leather hard tile that broke? If so remember that dried or partially dried clay will still absorb moisture and brake. It is going to be necessary to use some kind of release agent on the master tiles. Soap will do for a starter, then there are commercial release agents. Hope this helps.

    Let me see if I understand. Do you have a ceramic casting of a wolf or do you have a plaster mold? If you have a broken ceramic piece and you have all the pieces, I would glue them all together and try to make a plaster mold. It depends on how complicated the ceramic piece is. The more undercuts you have the more complicated the plaster mold. If you broke a mold try fixing it per my video., Hope that helps some.

    @@ForbiddenSpageti You can use plaster in a piping bag just fine. Run a test first to see how long it is going to take your plaster mix to start setting up. You will need to clean the plaster out of the bag before it starts to set up. Please let me know if you are planning to make a plaster mold of your wolf and if so do you know how to make a mold for it. That's a good question. Since we don't (normally) know what type or manufacturer the plaster mold was, I would simply re-hydrate the broken mold and use what ever plaster I had. if you want to be a little extreme, you could get a high quality (since I use indurstal plaster) plaster and try that. Another idea would be to try and contact the mold manufacturer and ask what type of plaster they used.

Well. . . I have a little less than I did. So that may be a good thing! Anyway, my shop looked like drunken hooligans had trashed it. There were some weird saves though. I didn't hardly loose any glass. There are a couple I don't know why they didn't. They should have for where I found them. I finally got everything cleaned up. . . Maybe not everything. . . .bout 85%. And am looking at fixing my molds I did pretty good. Only lost 4. A 1950's scroll saw did them no good. Didn't even dent the saw. :) thats how i found your channel.I am gonna be play listing all your vids for stage 2= fix what I can. Have ya keep me company and teach me stuff.
