How to repair a Harley-Davidson starter motor

In this video I show how to remove and disassemble the starter motor assembly from my 2008 Harley-Davidson Fat Bob. The process is very similar for all models. I then replace the starter motor clutch with an All Balls Racing after-market unit.

The All-Balls clutch unit comes with the ball bearing preinstalled, held in by grease. By reusing the old ball bearing it causes a stack-up issue when putting two ball bearings in the clutch assembly? Just look back in the video to see how far the gear shaft should be sticking out of the case. Yours is sticking out way to far because of the two ball bearings. Other than that obvious mistake, the rest of the video is helpful, but please correct the error so others won't blunder into this trap.

Great video and I did the same thing but after the new shaft was in it stuck out more than original. The teeth were staying on the flywheel after it was started and spinning the starter shaft. Had to cut about 1/8" off of plunger shaft to get it to retract properly. Works great now.

This is the first time I've seen your channel, I wish I had found it 6 years ago. My boss at the time decided I needed to work on three of his friends Harley's and build a fourth one for one of the friends wife's brother as a surprise from the club. While I'm an ok mechanic I have only worked on fifty's and sixty's Chevy, Ford, and Dodge's when i was a youngster. For the past almost 30 years it's been mainly Alfa spiders, Fiat Dino's and Maserati quattroporte and biturbo's with an occasional Ferrari and Lamborghini on the side. The closest I've come to working on bikes is doing tune ups on customers who had a Jalpa decided I needed to maintain his Ducati Panagale. I was hoping before his untimely passing after a driver totalled him and his Panagale, he was on the waiting list for a Panagale superleggra. He had a year left before he was to receive it. I wanted to take it for a spin since I have never been on a bike that had 250hp and 300lb dry weight I imagine it was a beast. I digress I had absolutely no knowledge of Harley's or motorcycles in general. So I would have found your channel extremely helpful. For that I thank you. Now if I ever find myself ever working on one again I know where to go and get help since I can tell the difference between a hard tails, soft tails and a Sportster. Past that and I would have to throw darts to decide what it is other than a Harley. Take care and God bless you and yours.

I'll be honest Richard. the main reason I make the mechanicing videos is that I've found that filming what I'm doing forces me to slow down and be methodical (particularly if I have to explain to the camera what I'm doing). I did a job a couple of days ago and when I'd got it back together I realised I'd messed up and had to start again. I then told myself "you wouldn't have made that mistake if you'd been filming it!"

Very nice video instruction, thank you. Too much audio verbiage though. This video could be much shorter in length without unnecessary talk. At 16:30 into the video, when you unwrap the new Starter Clutch and lay the new clutch next to the old clutch, they do not look the same. The new clutch, on the large gear side, the gear is wider than the old. And, the new clutch does not have a boss/shoulder next to the large gear. Is this an improvement to the OEM design? Thanks again for the fine video instruction.

I had to do this job on a relatively new 03 Softail. My starting technique was to blame. The bike would kick back and it put flat spots on the rollers of the centrifugal clutch. Over time, if enough of them lined-up, it'd just spin without engaging. The clutch was a Denso part found in many a Toyota so could be had a lot cheaper than through a H-D dealership (though through H-D it also came with a new jackshaft). Easy fix once removed though on the 03 Softail, from memory, the oil tank and outer primary had to come off.

Yes on earlier models you needed to remove the outer primary case to undo the starter motor. I fitted the All Balls Racing clutch because it is widely recommended. Cost me about £70 in the UK, but I'm sure it will be much cheaper in the USA. So far so good!

Found a couple of videos but yours was so much easier to follow being in Wales. Tell me what is the most obvious cause of starter motor failure and what noise does it make please? Anything like a Kazoo noise thingy and starter will only kick in now and again? I have the 2010 Dyna Superglide custom I cleaned all contacts first and put the starter back on to check that but it still didn't work so I have stripped the starter motor and I have the starter clutch drive out which like you described does feel grindy so to speak. Hog Parts I use as well, I Like the sweeties also lol. So will probably order a new one this week. Thanks again for all your info.

Compruebe el rodamiento de bolas. Es posible que ya tengas uno instalado. Si has añadido otra, habrá 2 bolas, lo cual es incorrecto.

It is possible that you have 2 ball bearings in the clutch assembly. I stated in the video to save and reuse the ball bearing, but one viewer pointed out that some replacements come with a ball bearing already installed. If that is the case and you add the old ball, it will not allow the shaft to retract far enough to disengage.
