By the way, the thing i hold up to perforate the wall is called a Paper Tiger. This can be purchased on line or at most hardware stores.

Ahhh. You are a genius! I've been waiting over a year for my husband to take down a kitchen border that has been on the wall when I moved in 15 years ago....sad huh. I used hot water and some dollar tree fabric softener. The border came down easily and the job was complete in 30 minutes. Thank you! Thank you! I am ready to paint now.

John Ripper's how to remove wallpaper is great, with the exception of vinyl wallpaper. You have to remove the top layer to get to the paper so the water can set in. The whole process took me about an hour and a half. (Border paper in a bathroom). I didn't have a putty knife. My son found a firm piece of plastic and it worked wonders. Thanks John, YOU ROCK!! A task that I was putting off because I knew it would take too long was a piece of cake.

John, thank you for taking the time to write back. You had many good suggestions and I tried each. Using boiled hot water was perfect! Upon the 3rd section I came to realize our wallpaper really needed a good, long soaking & using a wet towel worked very well. Patience was the answer & repeated soaking with a wet towel over a 30-45 minute period proved to work and the perforated wallpaper came off easily, but still had dry spots that did not come off that easily. I realized also I needed to score it much more than the instructions for it. Basically, it's a b***h taking off wallpaper & I found I had to try many different approaches. I think you're terrific for taking the time putting this video out and us DIYers have to try many different ways, as one size doesn't fit all. Thank you many times over! ps- my friend used your fabric softener suggestion & had great success

Excellent video. Thank you. Am just about to strip the hall, landing and stairs in my wife's house. I remember so clearly the first time I saw this terrible wallpaper (it's like what my Gran had at her house). My (now) wife and I had just started dating. She invited me back to her place. We had just come into the house. As we took our coats off she explained how she had only moved in 3 or 4 months before. She and her Dad were still decorating it.I am someone who never thinks before speaking so I said "....and this wallpaper?" For the first and only time in my life something stopped me going on to say "you'll be getting rid of this won't you?" BEFORE I managed to end our new relationship, she interrupted me with "..Yes, my Dad and I have just finished putting this wallpaper up". Thank you so much, Adjustment Bureau!!

Thank you! Within the first 30 seconds of this video, I now understand what all those tiny dot indentations are on the walls of one of the bedrooms in my house. The previous owners must have been removing wallpaper and pressed too hard in the process. Sponge painting pink over the base cream wall color camouflages it until you are close enough to one of the walls to notice.

Two questions: If it is already peeling in some places, should I try to just peel it first or do the water/softner step first regardless? And, it goes behind my kitchen cabinets and counter tops--how do I tackle where it meets the cabinets/borders? Should I run a utility knife along edge first to make straight tears? I'm scared! Been removing wallpaper for years and the newspaper is an excellent idea. The idea is to keep the wallpaper moist... trap moisture so that it will penetrate to the glue or adhesive. Another trick is to wet the wall with spray bottle mist and immediately trap that moisture with painters plastic. Have a section rolled out and ready to go up on the wall once you’ve wet it. It will cling to the wet wall. Leave it there for 15 to 20 min. Test to see if the wallpaper peels off. May need to reapply some moisture. I even use a little ammonia if you can tolerate the smell, that helps loosen the glue or paste.

Hello Sammy, thank you for watching my wallpaper removal video and for your comments. All that water is fine, but you NEED something to break down the glue. You mention amonia, but why use that when you can use sweet smelling fabric softner. So that is the secret to making wall paper remove easily. - thanks for watching, john ripper

Love the music, humor & video speed! so glad I found this video! today I removed some of the wallpaper all by spritzing with hot water & by hand without the scoring tool & it was slow & painful... I am going to try his method tomorrow! stay tuned folks....

I tried it....NO, don't use the solution with the fabric softener! It makes it really slippery to grab the wallpaper to pull it away, especially in tight corners & where the wall abuts the ceiling. Also, I believe it will leave an oily residue that will require thorough cleansing, otherwise it will interfere with paint adhesion.& I ended up having to spend time rinsing out the spray bottle to get rid of the softener greasy-ness. If you use the scoring tool, you better be very careful to avoid damaging the wall...it's a balancing act because it's supposed to penetrate the paper. I didn't feel scoring made a huge difference with loosening up the glue, because there were still many dry spots that required additional spraying. For the other wall, I intend to go very basic by pulling off the top layer of the wallpaper, then spray soak the bottom layer which is really easy to come off. Got to be very patient!

+Betty Chin Hello Betty, I'm sorry this didn't work out as well for you as you had hoped. You didn't have to worry about leaving an oily residue, as there is no oil in the solution, the fabric softner is just a little bit more of a soap to begin with, so you don't have to worry about that. We painted the wall afterwards and there was no problem. As for the scoring, it is obvious not to press to hard, but the tool does make it easier because the solution then works past the paper and goes into glue of the wall paper. As for the spray bottle, I've always liked to use the wet towel, as that way you're sure to get everything wet. Thanks for watching my video.

Thanks for this! So, we just pulled down paneling in one room of our house and found that previous owners had *tried* but failed to remove all the wallpaper they had put up. So there are still scraps of wallpaper on the walls around the room. Should I still use the roller tool even though it's smaller area of walllpaper in any given spot? And then wet the wallpaper scraps before, I'm thinking, just using a scraper to remove?

I've been a little delayed moving and had to rip out the carpet first as it stunk to the point that it became the priority. but I'll be tackling it next weekend and will let you know. A quick question though. I checked another video as well and it said to soak the wall in the softener/water solution, then score it, let it sit and then soak it again, recommending a double soak system. :) Do you think that is worth the extra effort? The wallpaper on my 3 walls is probably from the 70's. This house renovation really is an incredible work-out.

I tackled 2 rooms in the last week. The first was easy. It was a thick paper with a felt pattern, from another era. I went row by row and scored laterally and vertically and then in small circles. I slopped on the fabric softener and made sure to lay a drop cloth because the liquid ran down the wall to puddle on the floor. I bought the scraper specifically made for removing wallpaper, but didn't need to use it because the paper tore off clean. Next room not so lucky. The paper was old and had a shiny finish. The top shiny layer peeled of with a lot of trouble leaving the underneath thin paper stuck on the wall. I was glad i bought the special wallpaper scraper as it glided over the wall without gauging the drywall, making the scraping sooo much easier and faster. I'd scrape off one small section of shiny paper, then have to do another soaking application and sometimes re-score the surface before soaking. I'd let it sit for about 30 minutes. Then i'd scrape again. Then do the same with the paper layer under the shiny layer. I had to do about 4 soaking/scoring applications in some sections, but finally got it all cleaned off. ** I also recommend cleaning up the floor right afterward removing any wet paper bits. I cleaned up the big pieces, but got real tired and thought I'd leave the little paper bits for the next day. My logic was that they'd dry and be easier to sweep up dry rather than wet. Well, the next day they were dried ON THE FLOOR and very hard to get off. It would have been easier to sweep and wipe them up while they were damp. Just a heads up to save extra work .. ** I also recommend buying the unscented fabric softener if you're sensitive to scents. I like scents but bought the 'fresh scent' softener which REALLY over-powered the whole house. It smelled like i was living inside a fabric softening bottle. It's warm out so i left all the windows open, but if you're doing this in the winter and not able to open windows this is an important consideration. (The softener scent was strong but still an improvement from the urine soaked bedroom floor that was saturated through the carpet; but that's for another video and a whole other story. This renovation has been quite a surprise.) Thanks for your help and wonderful video. You get a 4 stars out of 4 stars.

In fact, after a LONG TIME trying to pick the wallpaper off the wall I'm calling it quits for the day. Perhaps I will have better luck in another day or two when my frustration level is reduced. But good for you John Ripper. It looks like your technique worked great for you.

Great video. Never thought that fabric softener would work to "de-glue" the glue. Seems a lot safer than those chemicals they suggest. I was wondering... what is the name of the tool you used to score the wallpaper? I have some pretty thick wallpaper (probably a couple of layers underneath, too) at my mother's house she needs to get rid of and even though this looks fairly easy I have my doubts about this particular project, unless i can find a deep enough mechanism to score the paper. Thanks and again, great video!

+Robert Brian Dennison glad you liked my silly video. I was just making a fun video, never thought it would get this many hits. The tool is called a wallpaper scorer. You should be able to get it at your local paint store. The chemicals in the softer break down the glue chemicals. I hope it works out out for you... remember the fun groovin' music to make the task easier. - john

Using fabric softener also works to get old stickers and decals off vintage cars windows. It’s much safer and gentler on the rubbers than heat guns or solvents. Use cosmetic face pads soaked in fabric softener and leave on for half the day or longer and a blade.
