This is Vinyl Compression Tiles (VCT), Not Luxury vinyl tiles (LVT). VCT always uses glue and these tiles break apart easy which makes this tile difficult when removing. This is an excellent video on how to use this special tool to take up tiles and there are similiar machines that can be rented at the local homedepot too.

I did this by hand today and I am in a lot of pain right now. I will always hate VCT tiles for the rest of my life because of this.

I got this tool and it worked on really hard and brittle stuck on adhesive vinyl tile that was two layers thick. It wasn't easy even with the tool but I learned how to angle it right so the tool did a lot of the work. Be careful. This tool is basically a jackhammer and can destroy whatever you push it against. Still, my 100 sq ft kitchen took me a day and a half. Harbor Freight had it for $140 in 2021. I rented a 5 horse gas powered compressor big enough to power it (Requires 10 CFM).

Not a bad idea. Heat helps reactive the glue which can make it easier to remove however if you are just replacing one damaged tile start from the middle of the damaged tile and u will avoid breaking the surrounding tiles like you did here

I do hope you had those tiles tested for asbestos before commencing removal? Since otherwise this seems a good way to get mesothelioma or asbestosis fast.

Nope never did lol. It's been years since I have done this job, I still alive lol. It was the job at the coffee shop and I install just the regular tiles about 600 square feet

@@IvanRossS Just be careful, since vinyl floor tiles can and did contain asbestos in the mix.Infact the symptoms of asbestos related diseases can actually take decades before they surface. Stay safe.

Asbestos IS a worry, to be sure. But to deal with it 'by the book' means hiring a team of asbestos abatement professionals who will charge thousands. I had old vinyl flooring to remove in our local community hall (volunteer job) and yes, it tested positive for asbestos. It cost me $135 just for that test. When I found out what the professionals would charge I did it myself. I sealed the area in sheet poly, set up a powerful fan in the window to exhaust any dust outside, and wetted the flooring before tearing it up. I kept spraying a mist of water on the area as I went. The waste material simply went to the dump. I then got on my hands and knees and carefully vacuumed every inch of the floor with a HEPA-equipped shop vacuum, then got busy laying commercial marmoleum. I did all of this quietly so as not to upset the nail-biters in our association.

I'm planning on getting this. Just had one question. Did you test to see if the mastic had any asbestos? I'm concerned that if it has asbestos, this machine would spread the fibers everywhere
