if you're concerned with asbestos, realize that the particles of asbestos would remain for a long time in the air after you removed the flooring. The respirator gives you immediate protection but the fibers could remain airborne or on your clothing for days... test first if you suspect asbestos. Then take proper steps (PPE, filtration etc.) to protect yourselves and family members.
This was SO helpful! Struggled for 2 days trying to remove the adhesive on my kitchen floor. After watching this video, I applied boiling waters to the floor and covered with towels to keep in the moisture and heat. After 15-20 minutes, it came off with a scraper very easily! What would have taken a week, will now be done today.

@JonnyDIY

Not too bad. A lot easier than it used to be. Now that vinyl is a lot softer and pliable. Just make a rough cut first and take your time making final cut (make sure you have plenty sharp blades). And just like hair you can always cut more, but you cant add it back after you cut it. So really visualize cuts. Draw shape out on paper youre going to cut. That helps visualize

Just started working on ours. It is brittle and breaking off. Sadly a flooring store owner did this floor and they did not even cut the edges off near the base cabinets. Rolled up agains the cabinets. It is directly on concrete. Doing mask just because of the dust. This flooring is pretty thin and going to have to do lot of scrapping after getting floor up. Some sections came up in longer pieces. We are doing a kitchen remodel and good part of the work we are doing to keep the costs down. If anyone has any suggestions, let me know. We went on to another projects. Now back to get this done. It is coming up in small (maybe 4 inch chunks) pieces. Tried soaking sections with water over night to get an edge to work under in spots. Slow process. Also this flooring is probably 40+ years old and very thin. Vinyl sheet. They also went nuts with wallpaper--3 layers and later found 2 additional styles behind a cabinet. No backs on any cabinets. Found all the wrong things they did. It will be nice once complete.

whoever built my last house went crazy while installing the kitchen floor and we only learned about it because we renovated the house before selling. Pulled up the laminate and the under part had been stapled in about a bazillion times. Honestly there was probably about 35 of these thin little staples per 2 square inches. Everybody got a turn going at the staples, I got there late and I still got myself a two foot spot where most of the staples had been removed, but I had to take out like 200. I have no idea how anybody installs something like that. Somewhere along the lines, as they're sending in their 50th staple while sitting in the same spot on the floor, you'd think they'd think to themself "there's gotta be a better way".

I have flipped 13 homes all up and down the West Coast. NEVER put water or a soaked towel on your sub floor. It can cause warping, rot and damage making the sub floor uneven and you unable to put tile or hardwoods down and make it level. Get a 5" floor scraper which is a razor edge. AND ONE LAST FACT: what you think the hot wet towel is removing isn’t glue at all. It’s the usually tan or gray paper backing to the one piece linoleum flooring left behind when you pull it up. GLUE FOR FLOORS IS NOT WATER SOLUBLE. IT IS CONSTRUCTION GLUE and waterproof.
@JonnyDIY

Good point on wood subfloors. My tip about the towel with hot water was for concrete slab foundations 👍
Johnny, I do have an older linoleum floor (pre 80s) and a respirator. Do I have to worry about lingering asbestos in the air or on surfaces after I pull up the floor? The floor is on concrete. Thanks

Theres really no way of knowing if it has asbestos being that age unless you have it tested. Can get information on that from municipal hazardous waste facilty. I would mask off the area with plastic to contain air to that space so as to not spread across house

Thanks Jonny! Question for you.. I'm about to install those new popular vinyl planks all through my house. I've got to smash the tile in the kitchen. Under that is a layer of vinyl. Do you think I should keep the vinyl as a moister barrier or rip it up? The vinyl plank are supposed to be moisture resistant. Thanks!

@@JonnyDIY I just wanted to follow up on this. I removed the tile. The vinyl was there, but had hundreds of nails in it due to the cement board. After a few hours of pulling out the nails, I knew the vinyl wasnt any good. When I pulled it up, I found that half of the subflooring underneath was rotten. Apparently the vinyl trapped moisture inside. Didnt help that I had insulation under the house. I ended up ripping out half of the subflooring and replacing it with new plywood. Jonny DIY do you think it matters? We are thinking about doing new Vinyl and new toilets in two bathrooms.
Question!? Do you have to remove the baseboards if you want to remove your vinyl/linoleum flooring?
@JonnyDIY
3 жыл бұрын
If the baseboards were run over top of flooring usually yes. You can try removing a section of flooring by baseboard and see if you're able to pull it out from underneath the baseboard. If theres caulking between floor and baseboards score that with utility knife first
@JonnyDIY
3 жыл бұрын
You should be able to pull it out now thinking about it. Whether or not new flooring will fit under baseboards is something else. A lot of times you can just add some quarter round trim or base shoe molding to cover new gap between the flooring and baseboards

I want to take the carpet out and lay laminate or cork flooring and have a good underlay to protect from the very cold cement. Not sure if damp comes from it. It's surely very very cold. However, when I lifted the carpet I found old linoleum in parts of the flat. I started removing it but it's such a big job. With a steam machine, it was much harder than what this video shows. Why did you wear a mask?
@PositiveZ7

To decrease inhaling fiber, dried adhesive, and potential asbestos. It can't hurt to wear it
that vinyl flooring is so ugly

Haha that's why I tore it out! 🤣👍🏻
At least this guy wears a mask. I feel sorry for the home owners, tho.

@@JonnyDIY you literally said in the video you were wearing the mask because the vinyl could have asbestos?

@@MrJaybeezy123 it's always a possibility. I try to pass the precautionary measures on to the viewers. I have come across asbestos in flooring before. Stay safe 👍🏻

@@JonnyDIY thank. Do you think you could tell when a certain vinyl was made by how it looks (style, etc). Also, will a 3m p100 respirator really protect? It's the one with the cartridges that protect against organic vapor/particulates. The bigger bulky pink cap ones. Thanks again!

Yes the P100 is a great filter to use for this. If you suspect the vinyl is older than 1980, assume it may have asbestos and take precautions 👍🏻
Don’t need a how to video for stuff comes up like this. Try a couple layers from 70s,80s.
This video is full of bs
