First off that bore scope blew my mind! I love it. Came here thinking about doing plugs on my dads scary 5.4. This was the best how to ive seen. No cutting corners and showing the whole process. Im still worried but im gonna slowly give it a try

I swear I watched 10+ videos of "replacing spark plugs" and they talk, and talk and talk but you can't see anything and they start with the air cleaner, intake and the bracket removed to start with. Great video on how to do this. I took an auto mechanic course in 1988 and passed the Nova Scotia Department of Labor exam, I have always worked on my own vehicles but I have always had old vehicles that were easy to work on. I was going to change out the plugs on my 02 until I watched this video, not because I think that I can't do it, but because it looks like more trouble than I want to deal with at my age. The truck is running fine so I will leave it alone until the plugs need to be changed, I saved your video for when that day comes.

@@Mr_Goody So I finaly did mine, it was not fun but I got it done. I ended up removing the driver side fuel rail because I did not have anything that would remove number 7 coil, I tried a bunch of things that I had but I had nothing low profile or small enough diameter to make it work, maybe if I had a 1/4" universal or a flex head ratcheting wrench I could have done it without removing the fuel rail. I had one of the o-rings staying in the connector, I was able to remove it with a homemade pick without damaging it. The old truck is running well, going to have the fluids changed tomorrow. I'm a bit absent minded and with all the disconnects and disassembly of this and that just to remove the rails - I would no doubt screw something up. I'm glad I happened on your video! My truck is a 2001 F250 but I doubt the difference between the f150 and f250 would be hardly any at all. Looks easy - but as you stressed - its not. But its easy for a lame brain like me to follow, if you get my meaning. LoL. I appreciate you taking the time to do this video and taking the extra pains to video the process. Its not that easy to do the filming of this stuff and get the details.

I just started this task a couple weeks ago. My truck had a missfire, so I replaced 5 out of the 8 plugs/coils. The back ones on both sides, and the one in cyl #7 are a bear to get at, so I'm going to wait until I replace the intake to do them (this summer). Seemed to fix my misfire, after I replace the intake, injectors, gaskets, and do a timing job, it should run like a top!

Do these one at a time. Prevents debris from falling into the spark plug wells.

Thanks for the video. Regarding drivers side number 3, I just ground the 7mm socket down to make it really short and used a u-joint and extensions behind it. Better yet would be a 7mm with a built in u-joint. (Whole job; six hours - lots of extensions, wobbly extensions, u-joints, electrical tape to hold sockets on, magnet, and 3/8 air to spin things off when busted loose).

I’m not trying to fool anybody I was just showing on this particular truck how to get the bolts off without removing the fuel rail. And these don’t have as bad as a reputation of breaking off as the 3 valve you are right, but they can still break off.

Great video! Just wanted to mention, You talked about being careful not to break the porcelain or you would have to drill the plug out, Your thinking of the 2 piece plugs on the 5.4 Triton 3 Valve, which was found on 2004+ models. You have a 5.4 Triton 2 Valve which has the 1 piece plugs and don't have this issue, The 2 Valves are however known to occasionally spit out a spark plug if not torqued correctly (20ft lbs).

Not always true, working on a 2002 with the style plugs in the video. Guess what? One of the plugs came out partially and I'm having to go after the threaded part now. ALL spark plugs have at least two pieces

Watched to see if I can do it. Gonna have to nope outta this one...., but glad this video was here to see, think sometimes it’s best to cut your losses and leave it to the experts. This is the first vehicle I’ve seen with spark plugs like this. Usually you just yank the wires and unscrew them. This here is like brain surgery, lol...I know this is dumb for me to say, But sometimes it feels like they design stuff to be very difficult to repair, so that they can keep mechanics in business.

Hopefully you have an honest mechanic. My front plugs were pretty new NGK’s, the back 4 were smoked Motorcraft’s. Took me 6 hours (ok 4 without breaks for crying and praying) to do my Excursion. Knuckles are still sore a week later😅

Use penetrance spray first, let it soak and then blow it out with an air gun then remove the plug

Tough job you did a good job some places charge 350 to 500 bucks to do this and believe it or not

I have to do this. I am really dreading it. I am going to watch a video on taking the fuel line off the driver's side. If it isn't difficult (probably is) it might be better to take the driver's side off before working on it. I am really worried about breaking the spark plugs. That u-joint extension for your socket looks like it would put pressure on the plug as it might not turn like a straight socket and extension.

The triton is notorious for blowing plugs! That's what was on the end of that plug

Oil in spark plug tube usually means leaking valve cover gaskets.

Yes, you are correct and you can just replace those spark plug gaskets on the valve pan which is not too bad of a job at all. 👍

@@ricks3313 the spark plug wells are metal tube that goes straight down and the valve pan goes over them and rest on top of them, and there are gaskets that surround the spark plug well at the top of the valve pan cover those gaskets for some reason are damaged such as dry, rotted or cut then oil will in fact leak down into the spark plug and what I was saying is that on a lot of valve pans, you can change the rubber gaskets on the valve pan cover.

I didn’t think the 2V triton had the breaking plugs issue. That was the 3V. This motor likes to launch spark plugs and coils into the stratosphere though 🤣

I thought the 3V weren't used until 2003 models. Pretty sure 2002 models are 2v that actually like to blow out plugs, not break. The 3v engines are the 2-piece plug designs that break in the wells.

Yes, 3v valve had the 2 piece plugs. The issue with these 2 valves is low thread engagement, so plugs can loosen up and blow out and you can easily strip and crossthread them. Still, video does a good job showing how to get at those back two headache plugs.

Great video... My 1997 has the 4th cinder misfiring. That was the last one in your video. The really gunked up one. I'm guessing oil leaked down into the spark plug well? Maybe from the valve cover? Did any of that gunk get down into the cylinder when removing the plug?

I cleaned down in the cylinders before removing the plugs with brake fluid cleaner. That way gunk won’t get into the cylinders when you take out the plugs.

great video, can you answer one question for me. were does the top vacuum hose on the throttle body air snorkel at exactly 7:00 mark of the video. where does the other end connect to? mine is missing totally. I only have the bottom one but the hole on the snorkel is still here for the top one. I hope that makes sense.

If I remember correctly because it has been a while since I’ve done this video and I don’t actually on the truck I just work own them for people. I believe it’s a vacuum line that connects close to the firewall.

I just did coil 7 (third back on the driver side) and could NOT get it without removing the fuel rail. It was a nightmare! I'll pay someone to do plugs if I ever have to. My arms are still sore from the beating they took doing this!!

@@davidcapps6111 My condolences. I think I'd rather eat glass. Mostly because of the fuel pressure regulator being in the way of the #7 coil. However, the driver side is super crowded and everything is hard to reach.

Not bad. I have to do four one day and probably a few more next day. Took me over an hour to replace the fuel filter. Forgot to remove the pressure. Son of a @&$$(

It's not the 2 valve engines that are known for spark plugs breaking in the head, they are a one piece plug. It's the triton 3 valve engines (2004-2010) that are known for breaking in the head and it's usually always the rear plug on either bank. Hmmm I wonder why the back ones...we'll because it's so hard to get to that people either rush or don't have the correct combination of extension/swivels and they torque break them because they weren't perfectly centre. That's why companies make specific tools to remove those plugs. The triton 2 valves were known for ejecting the plug because of the poorly designed 3-4 threads the head has. I own a 03 triton 5.4 and you want to make sure you torque to 20-25ft/lbs. Factory spec calls for 13ft/lbs!! Ya maybe if it had 6-10 threads holding. Obviously you don't want to over do it and strip out the aluminum threads but I have done mine at 20ish ft/lbs and no problems with many thousands of miles. Funny how Ford messed up on the first gen tritons ejecting spark plugs so then they engineer a 2 piece plug with many more threads to catch that now break off in the head. Like I said it's mostly due to worker error on that part, but a one piece plug design would of helped tremendously.

Best thing to do is to use a Borescope so that you can see down inside the cylinder and see what’s going on and then from there you can see what the problem is and go from there. The worst possible case scenario you can use an extraction tool that they rent at AutoZone.

Mind is a 2000 f 150 has coil over top each plug

Very good video. I think I'll keep my children away because I don't want them to hear all the cursing. I've worked on a lot of vehicles over the years, many European and also motorcycles. But for some reason I'm not looking forward to this job. This truck has almost 300k on it and it started skipping. Lord knows when the plugs were changed.

The oil ring seal gaskets on the valve pan was leaking. To fix it I replaced the spark plug O Ring seals on the Valve pan.

Great video, I have an 04 F150 XLT Triton with a 4.6L, I went to do a tuneup on it and ran into a problem. The third cylinder on the passenger side will not accept my 5/8 inch spark plug socket, I can’t get that thing to go on the spark plug to save my life. The first two on the passenger side went smooth as silk, but the third one I cannot get it to go on. Now, I got frustrated and moved on to the drivers side and again the first two went on without a hitch, but the EXACT SAME cylinder the third one will not go on the plug. I’ve tried EVERYTHING I have, wobbles, long extensions, short extensions, etc and NOTHING will work. Idk what/who did what to this thing, but I find it strange that the EXACT SAME cylinders won’t accept my plug socket. ANY IDEAS as to what the heck is going on? I don’t have a bore scope to see what’s going on and my local Autozone wants $137.50 to rent one and I’m not doing that. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated, I’m completely stumped. If someone put two different kinds of plugs like 1 Autolite and 1 Bosch, would they be different socket sizes? That’s all I can come up with, thanks for listening.

I just ran into the same exact problem #3 passenger. The boot on mine was soaked, warped and burnt. The spring was fused to the plug. The socket would not catch the plug. I think the plug may've been loose. I found, a piece of carbon or plastic was interfering. After many tries, I tightened the plug, but the socket wouldn't come off. I then removed the plug that was very hard to loosen, all the way out. I reinstalled without the rubber socket insert. Furthermore, I tuned and turned by hand and felt it wasn't catching until it suddenly stopped. One 1/8 turn on the ratchet, it was fully tight. This seemed wrong, but it was tight. The #2 cylinder, was no issue by comparison.

Are used a borescope which has a camera on it to look inside of the spark plug wells to see if there was any leaking around the rubber O-rings and leaking into the spark plug. Well wish there was not.

Is this also for the 1997 5.4 v8 ? I thought spark plugs had problems in 2004 to 2006 ?

No, it is a little different in the 1997 Ford F150 V8. I will include a link that is pretty easy to follow on the video to changing them. This isnt the engine that is notorious for the plugs breaking off. That's the 3 valve triton engine with those long weird loking plugs. This engine does have an issue with plugs blowing out while driving down the road. Looks like thats what likely happened with the one plug you had. definately a helpful video though.

You don’t have to take off half of what you took off. Just take off the plastic cover that says 5.4 and that’s it. They are all easy to get to without removing the air intake and the bracket that holds the throttle cable to

That looks like a 2 valve and not the 3 valve. The 2 valve plugs tend to blow out, not break.

Typical Ford engineering: make repairs as difficult as possible, also design plugs that break off in the head (two piece plug, why?), Shorten plug length so they blow out of the head, and then design specific Ford-only tools to do the repairs. They've been doing it for decades.

They don’t want people working on their own vehicles so they can make more money by selling parts and tools.

a good strong magnet on an extension handle is real handy on this job. as usual ford engineered these cop systems so the job would be as difficult as possible so dealers can screw the customer out of as much money as possable, the going cost for this job here is $450-700 I can change plugs on my tahoe in 30-45 minutes ford=shit

Only the 3V are trouble. They have an extra long porcelain piece at the bottom. I've never had a problem getting out or putting in 2V or 4V plugs. Although the 2V and 4V are known to shoot out from the factory. Torque them 20-25 foot pounds. Good to go.
