Your videos are invaluable to ensuring I remove parts without tearing them up. I got rear ended a while back and had to remove the bumper, end caps and everything associated with it. Since my insurance company deemed it a total loss, I was able to get all of the parts for 1/4 of what they paid me. I don't care about the salvage title. I painted all the plastic pieces with truck bed liner (including the side trim and mud flaps) and it looks awesome. I also painted the front bumper with truck bed liner and the grill with a satin black. I installed fog lights along with brand new headlights with black bezels, and topped that off with a brush guard that protects the headlights as well. Now I need to paint the roof rack and put new decals on the bars. After that I'm painting the step bars and I'm finished. For Each project I've watched your videos first to make sure I don't force something and break it. My front bumper was also missing the screws underneath. I found them on a Nissan parts dealer website for 67¢ each. I think it takes 5 so I ordered 10. When I take anything apart on the XTerra or my Titan, I like to use all new fasteners to put it back on. Thanks a bunch!

You got super lucky. Most people have issues with the rivnuts spinning in the roof, myself included. Nissan used a thread locker on the bolts and didn't tighten most of the rivnuts. This has lead me, and many others to have to pull the headliner and use vice grips to hold the rivnuts. Oh, and some of them are in enclosed roof supports, so that's fun.

It is REALLY IMPORTANT to not overtorque the bolts. They screw into rivnuts and I pulled the rivnut through the roof. Bad. And I did it with a ratchet wrench. This adds no end of misery as now the roof liner has to come down to get a replacement nut in place. Now I use my fingers on the ratchet head to tighten the bolts.

Ry, I have a 2008 Xterra to which I am adding 2 32” light bars on the roof rack going with the length of the vehicle, I am adding 4 small lights to each corner of the rack also. I am in need of ideas as to how and where to run the wiring as I am going to the dash where the cutouts for the rocker switches are. The only idea I can figure is drilling a hole in the roof and running down the windshield to under the dash but with so much wiring that’s a big hole to drill in a roof. Help!!

Hey buddy, thanks for the diy maintenance videos! I'm hoping you can take a moment to read a question and bounce back any thoughts or ideas you might have. I have a 2015 Pro4X. I'm getting ready to undertake a painting project, and I've been on the fence on taping off the roof rack vs. removing it. I'm pretty sure I want to remove it, and your video was very helpful. HOWEVER, as I'm sure you know, the Pro4X has overhead lights that are integrated into the roof rack. I'm wondering if the lights are fixed to the inside of the rack itself, and if so, are there wire clips that I can just un-clip or am I going to find a mess of factory solder globs? Difficulty? Advice?

  • @Rythecarguy

+Justin Observation I would be willing to bet that you will find a plastic clip connector with a rubber boot. Most items, especially optional features, are easy to add and remove. If you did decide to tackle it I would highly doubt you would run into soldier. Additionally you can try to remove that first and if you have trouble you can just tape it off instead of tackling the removal of the rack.

This one was harder than expected, but worth it. Unbelievable what i found under the box and deflector, and there was a fair amount of gooey stuff between the pads and sheet metal. First problem I had was removing one bolt, which cammed out, so I ended up drilling it and using channeloks around the shoulder to remove the rest. For others that have this unfortunate situation, the bolts are stainless so you have to drill a pilot, slow, with oil, and a good quality bit. May not be so good when done.... Second problem was reinstalling the pads. The long front pad had shrunk over time and required a very tricky operation of pulling it with needlenose pliers and a plastic screwdriver to the the skirt of the pad to sit outside of the plastic mounts. Finding the replacement shoulder bolts wasnt so easy and i have a few on order. I do plan to add a nylon washer under the screw head, as the original bolts had a plastic washer but many of them fell off in pieces when i removed the bolts. I suspect they are important to seal against moisture leaking in around the threads, and another option could be to use RTV

I have the same issue. I discovered that there is a weld nut holding the screws into place and what has happened is that the weld nut has broken loose from the glue on the plastic and that is what is causing it to spin freely. I am still looking for a solution to get them out without destroying the plastic piece on top. (i.e. I am trying to replace the small original plastic piece with the cargo bin)

Any ideas on what to do if the bolts are just spinning in place? I think the screw and riv nut (I think that's what the holes are) are either spinning in place or the bolt inside the nut is spinning in place. I tried using pliers, sticking a screw driver underneath but had no luck.

Well if you are referring to bolts that go through the roof into the lower mounts then you need to remove your headliner from the interior. Even then the actual brackets that hold the nut may be inside the support rails. I have never taken it out so i cannot say for sure. But I would imagine that you would have to get some needle nose pliers and hold the nut that the screw screws into from the other side. :/

+James Coles-Nash No, actually its been pretty solid. I bought this Xterra from a sleezy dealer and I knew it had problems. I brought my OBD reader and read the codes before buying. I bought it with intentions of making this channel so it was ok that it needed some work. Check out the videos in my channel. Every issue the truck had I made a video about. The only thing I would say is look out for is an issue with the automatics. They had a transmission cooler issue that, if left untouched, can completely destroy your transmission. Its a line that when broken mixes the coolant with the trans fluid then runs it through the box. eek! let me know if you pick one up!!

Previous owner had done the trans intergrated cooler bypass(looped each port with a rubber hose) and installed a separate trans cooler(which i replaced with a bigger one(new) that i have on stanby) .... No worries now.... If the intergrated one wanna bust open, well more channels for antifreeze to flow around rad haha . Its a completely seperate system(similar to a Toyota truck setup) hope this helps

The SMOD issue is a not an issue with Xterras that had a manual transmission (like Ry's which is manual). Nissan changed the radiator (new part number) around 2009ish (not sure exact year) along with changing the type of transmission fluid which solved the SMOD problem.

I'm sure it's possible. It's likely screwed in. If you want to irreversibly remove them you could sand down the holes and fill them with body filler, or you can use some very stored sealant or caulk type product to fill the holes. Not sure how that would work out though.

So your option is to drill them out or if they arent corroded, try to tighten them as if your installing them with a tool or long stud and oversized nut. If you never want this issue for life then take the rack off and fiberglass them holes lol.
