If you look on the top of the metal head housing, behind the drill chuck, there should be a small hole. Put in a small diameter phillips head, hex key, etc. Turn the chuck while pressing down on the inserted item and at some point it will lock the spindle. This way you won't need to "whack" or "strike" the thing with a hammer. You can simply unscrew the screw with pressure and then unscrew the chuck. Conversely, with the spindle locked, you can tighten down the chuck without "whacking" or "striking" it with a hammer. You may not have the spindle lock hole on your drill, but most Craftsman electric drills have one.

I was about to kiss my Craftsman goodbye, but decided to read this comment, and sure enough, with a shot of penetrating oil and an extra pair of hands we got that mangled chuck off.

You saved my old drill. Dropped an Allen key into the hole and it held the chuck in place. Excellent tip.
Thank you. Worked like a charm.

I have this drill, bought it brand new in the late Seventies or early Eighties , I use It frequently, still works great and I still have the handle that screws into the side.
Hi, I've got a Craftsman, Model 315.10510 drill I bought at a thrift shop for $7.00. This 3/8" variable speed drill seems to work fine. I'm not sure how old it is, but it's pretty similar to your drill. Might be slightly newer, maybe the next generation. I would like to remove the chuck and clean it up a little so your video was very helpful.
Muy buen video, mil gracias!
SWEET VIDEO !! This is MY much loved drill!. So good to see you treat it kindly. I learned a lot from watching this video of yours. I have been wanting to change out the chuck for a key-less one. What's your opinion on key-less chucks for a drill like this? Thanks
It a variable speed control
Thanks for information
Just what I needed. Thanks.

In other words...it's LEFT HAND THREADS. turn clockwise to loosen. Thanks
Thanks. I enjoyed and learned. My old (from about 1980) Craftsman doesn't hold drill bits very well. I tighten the chuck as muxh as I can, but they slide. Do you think a chuck will take care of it?

Yes, more than likely a new chuck will help.
That is exactly my model number and drill! -even down to the rusty head LOL since mine is too! I know they don't sell those chucks for that model I got my hand-me-down from my Dad and I need a new chuck. "discontinued" even at "specialty" stores.

Very cool! I believe you could just use a generic replacement chuck.
Exact same drill as mine which needs a new chuck. THANKS MUCH

My ~40-yr-old Craftsman drill, similar to this one, just died a few days ago. I am now trying to get the chuck off to retrieve the add-on tool that helps to drill vertical holes and center holes. When I look down the barrel of the chuck, there is no visible screw, so I can't figure out how to get the chuck off. Any ideas?
I have a Makita drill and the left hand screw is stripped can't get it off It's stuck and it's a Philips screw Is it a good idea to take a flat head screwdriver and punch it till it grabs

Yea I prefer using the flat head for these jobs. Less slippage.
I have an old Craftsman 3/8" electric drill, model number 315.11441. I saw the videos regarding removing the keyed chuck. They were excellent. My question is, can I replace the keyed chuck with a modern keyless chuck, and if so, what make/model/type should I use? Again, great videos. Thank you.

I'm pretty sure you could put a keyless chuck as long as you match the threads. I would stick with a Jacobs Chuck. Plenty to choose from here: amzn.to/3i2Jq0b Thanks :)
