How to remove roof on Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 BJ40
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
How to remove the hardtop on a Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 (BJ40).
I remove the hard top from a 1975 FJ40 after being on for over 25 years.
Rusted and stubborn bolts get broken.
Tub / body gasket stuck on.
Using a floor jack to pry the roof off the body. All fun and a few learnings.
After this video was published a viewer commented to tell me about fastener bolt that holds the roof anchor post in place. The roof would have come off a lot easier if I would have known to loosen those. Lol

Easy 237 step process 😂! Cool vid. Thanks!
I feel like celebrating any time I'm able to remove ANY bolt without it breaking on my FJ40.
Good video, like my last comment, been 20yrs plus since I've done this. Nice job on the bolts, I'm in the process of finishing up switching all my bolts to SS. Majority of mine are rusted in tight! What a pain in the butt!!

HAha. Thanks. And I broke most of the bolts that were on the outside of the truck. Luckily the ones inside were ok.
I used to just stand on the bed and push up, with the roof supported on my back. Then I'd back up and step off the back. I dont recommend that method. It didn't always go smoothly. Definitely nothing better than topless with the windshield down, exploring. Makes me feel like a kid, everytime. Ps. Cutting those door tubes down helps alot. Haha

Lol. That method would probably make a better video though. 😜
You made my day.
Great job. I would at least added a second 2x4 across the top of the other 2x4 to make a "T" for more support and prevent a center dent.

Good point. It lifted pretty easily so luckily it didn’t dent or bend. I’ll use another board on top next time. 👍🏻
There is a screw on each side behind each dowel that needs to be loosened before removing the top

I love my '40, but that top is a pain to remove. Glad you have space to do it, qnd not having to store it outside under a tarp! Your 40 looks to be in great shape btw. I'd kill for some jump seats.

Ya. It’s in pretty good shape compared to most. The top is actually stored outside. 😜. I’m planning to put it back on for the winter.
the Toyota FJ40 legendary car is perfect for modification ANYTIME
Thanks, this is one of the videos I 've seen about the top removal. Just wanted to see what was involved in the process. I'm thinking about putting a soft top on mine. It's an FJ43 and many of them here in Colombia have the soft top, which I think looks very cool. We'll see. Cheers!
Wow your forty is in great shape!

Sure is. I am surprised how nice the interior is and the lack of rust. 👍🏻
Love this.
Nicely done dude!

Thanks. I appreciate the feedback.
Nice job on removing the top. I broke the front window sheld bolts. I will need to drill and tap anyone, know the size of bolt s and pitch of threads to get the right tap. Thanks
Hey Darin, Thanks for that top removal. there are no videos that I have seen yet that show this removal. I am restoring a FJ40 1968 and I can't seem to find a top for it anywhere! so I am maybe looking to fabricate my own top. first out of fiberglass than making molds from there. I have made mold before but nothing this big. if you or anyone can help me find a top it would save me tones of time making one!

Hi. I do know of a couple tops in British Columbia. Let me know if you’re interested and send me your email. I can send you the info or get you in touch with the sellers.

Great job. Did the dowels come up with the hardtop or did they stay in the lower part? How many dowels?
@TheCarNextDoor

The dowels came up with the hard top. There are actually a couple bolts on that pillar behind the seats that act as set screws on these dowels. I didn’t loosen mine. Lol.

@@TheCarNextDoor Thanks Darin. Your video is the only one out there on this subject. I got my restored 77 FJ40 about 6 months ago and can't wait to take the top off. I have the plastic tailgate insert, OEM windshield side view mirrors, Weathertech step in my hitch and an electric hoist with ratchet straps on the ceiling of my garage. Just need the Spring!

@@brianvangor1475 Sounds like you’re more prepared than I was. Lol. I didn’t have a plan for the rear tailgate but ended up making one out of aluminum and attached it to my spare tire holder. It seems to work well. I really need to find some of the OEM side mirrors.

Did you loosen the 2 bolts that hold the B pillar top post's in? They kinda hide in that corner.

@@TheCarNextDoor well. When I restored mine in 2012 I had to unbolt about 7 bolts on each side of rear fenders that hold roof down. As well as the ones u removed from windscreen etc. Truly miss my 40. Sold it late 2017 😱

Hoisting it by the roof rack? Cringe worthy work.

I wouldn’t have done it if it wasn’t solid. Now that I think about it, it would have made for some good hillbilly rust brothers entertainment if the roof rack came loose. 🤣🤣
