How to remove Pupae and Dead Mealworms

This is a great technique to use in smaller operations to remove pupae and dead mealworms from live, harvested mealworms.

Great informative video, thanks! I just started my own colony with a few hundred mealworms from Wal-Mart (DMF Bait Co.). But they are huge now, some 2" or longer with no pupae so far. I'm concerned that they have been treated with hormones to lengthen the larval stage and/or make them sterile. Do you have any suggestions? Or do I just wait them out and see if I have any luck?

likely hormones, wait them out. You could also acquire some additional mealworms (non-treated) to see if there's some sort of magic in your environment/feed/etc that keeps them from pupating. If you do have some magic, let the world know!!! :)

Are you sure they aren’t superworms? 2” is pretty normal for supers If they’re definitely mealworms then yes they must have been treated with something

How do you know if the meal worms are dead? Strictly by coloration to black? Because some don't move anymore.. Are these dead too? Thanks!!

They could be dead, but on a brighter side they could be molting to get bigger, or transitioning to pupae. Another less common scenario is that they are cold, below 60F would make them slow down, below 40F not much movement.

what if I don't want pupa/beetles. can I get rid of them somehow?

Pupae actually have more protein than mealworms, they are good feeders as well. Beetles could also be fed to chickens, I'm not sure if they would work for reptiles.... Alternatively, you could place them in the freezer to euthanize them, then place them out in nature to decompose.

Long story short, I discovered beetles and larvae alien looking things in my container of meal worms (I was definitely perplexed) that I bought for my lizard. My question is, are black meal worms dead?

Yes, black mealworms are dead unfortunately. If you don't want them to transition to pupae (alien things) and then beetles, store them in the fridge. That will slow them down, so they are less likely to change to a pupae/beetle. If you don't use the mealworms in the fridge within 3 weeks, take them out once a week and give them moisture like potato slices or carrot slices, let them eat for 3 hours, remove anything left, and place them back in the fridge.

I heard that mealworms will eat the pupae and that one should remove the pupae from the mealworms. Do you find that true?

Is there a way to remove dead mealworms from live ones? I received my first shipment of mealworms and there are several blackened/dead ones. Also, what is your recommendation of the optimal temperature and humidity to raise mealworms?

Take an egg carton, preferably pulp/paper egg cartons, and place it in a bin. Pour mealworms over it, not full, maybe a handful at a time. Let them crawl for a couple mins, turn it over to let dead fall off, then shake the mealworms off into another bin. Rinse/repeat as needed. If there aren't many dead ones, hand picking is usually quickest.

@@MidwestMealworms Thank you! I saw a video showing heat technique separating live beetles from dead ones. There seems to be a lot of dead or dying mealworms in this shipment, however. I admit having no prior experience. I have picked off a large quantity using a pair of hemostats (sp???), but know there will be more. I requested a post office pickup, however the shipper (an established mealworm farm) ignored it and it came to my rural mailbox. Anyway, I will try your suggestion. Thank-you again for your response and informative videos on mealworm farming.
