    So I removed 3 pavers in my driveway with only two flathead screwdrivers. Pavers were 6” x 9”, 2 1/2” thick. Someone parked and leaked oil-arrrgh! Honestly, I didn’t time myself, but I think it took probably 45 min to remove the first, 15 min to remove the second ... third was a cracked one on the other side, so that one took long as well. Entire project took about 2 hours. Job too small to hire someone, so I had no choice. Saw another KZread with a guy replacing pavers with “donation” pavers and he used the “flathead screwdrivers.” He did it rather quickly! This video scared me ... made me think I couldn’t do the job. Of course I have none of the tools he mentioned. Took a LOT of patience to lift them just a little at a time, going from side to side, until entirely raised out of the space. I’m not soooo strong ... but I am determined and oh, by the way, I am a woman!

    I had a go at lifting some of these last night as a practice for repairing several sunken patches in my drive at the weekend. I used most of the recommended tricks: pick a starting brick with gaps on all edges, clean out the joints etc. I tried 3 or 4 bricks but none of them would budge at all. I was about to give up when I got one to move a fraction. I applied a pry bar on either side slowly working it up only mm at a time, but it worked and came out without me having to damage the brick at all. IMHO the trick to pulling up brick paving without smashing everything is to find an easy brick (which may not be near where you want to pull them up). Once you have one brick up the rest are much easier and you lift and work your way over to where you originally wanted to pull up the bricks. Of course hammering a crowbar in to the gap doesnt work, you are just packing the bricks even tighter together than before. If you have a pressure washer, clear out all the joints around the brick you want to pull up - it makes it a lot easier

    Sadly, we tried all the tricks. But often times, the builder (or whoever laid the pavers) will use thin set or even concrete to keep the pavers from moving, making it that much harder to remove them.

    I forgot about that, yea some websites recommend mixing a bit of concrete in with the sand. Good for the contractor i guess as they dont get called back, but if you want to remove/replace... Sand seems to work well enough for me, but Ive now found a new problem: Ants! They are digging up my fresh repairs. I had to put down a ton of poison last night to try to stop them. I couldnt believe how much sand they had managed to pull up from below in a only a few days, maybe concrete is better... The other videos arent lying though, also the bricks im pulling up are about twice as thick as the one you showed and now Ive got down the technique I can do it with a screwdriver and nothing else

    He's right over the years they are jammed against one another. I hammer drill 16 Dia holes in a line across the paver and the some 10 Dia holes between but slightly to the side. Then with a club hammer and 1" flat chisel break through the paver between the holes. Once through the block use the flat chisel on the joints between the pavers to agitate and move paver bits. I found using a lot of water from a watering can makes them move better. Once a part starts moving use a small crow bar to lever it out. Then move onto the second bit with the same process. Then go round the next block hitting the joints all around the paver with the flat chisel to loosen it. Using a lot of water get a pick axe and lever it out rock and roll style. After that its all easy to lift more of them

    The pavers are cemented into the ground that's why there not coming up like a tile . Other videos show removing bricks from a wall standing up right , well that's easy because it hollow behind the brick. In this case you have mortor cement underneath the brick that keeps it in place and grout cement in between . Sorry to say but if you intend on replacing that whole floor you got to get a jack hammer break it all up because it's all cemented in .

  • @KingLama1
    @KingLama15 жыл бұрын

    its because your pressing the block against the next block so trying to lft the whoile patio! Plus once kiln dried sand is placed between the cracks of the pavers. You can't budge them that's what they are meant to do, of course. To remove an area for repair, youy will need a Jack hammer, literally break up one or two pavers to get to and lift the next ones. They don't budge once sand is locked inbetween each paver. Good Roman design feature. I've just had a large driveway laid. Easy to remove with right tools before the sand, dam impossible to do so afterwards. As each pavers is pressing, joined, locked against the next one....... start at an edge, or literally break one up to get a start point.

The first time we did it we did it this way (ie sledge hammer etc) I watched all the videos on this topic and I simply flooded the bricks first the i was able to get the out with a screw driver. I didn't destroy a single brick (I did f-up a good screwdriver though) and was able to get 25 10 -year old pavers out in about 30 mins. USE WATER!!!

That will knock all the sand away fairly quickly so there is more of a working gap, I would recommend that from UK - and I'm not even a professional. The guy in the vid would make life a lot easier for himself if he tried that. Sometimes its easier to stop and think and save yourself some labour. Sure, with all the sand you are going to really struggle. Maybe once the sand is out its more realisic that lighter tools aren't that bad ( small screwdriver even lol)

    If one chose the right starting point and cut the slots with a thin grinding wheel that would make wonders in lifting the pavers. A home made special clamp to pick the first paver also helps a lot. Never use brure force, but vibrating the paver is much better, The greatest distraction on earth is small powerful vibrations at higher frequency. That is the reason why a grinding wheel works better than a hammer and a chisel. Just be patient, It may be a slow start, but faster in the long run.

    It looks like to me that the pavers are set on concrete and they are put down with stone adhesive.. Most of your old school paver jobs were put on sand and a lot easier to get out. When we install these jobs we just glue the edge pavers and and leave the rest of them floating because the new paver sand is a hardening sand mix.. That could also be an issue you are having.

    With all do respect, you are kind of going at this with brute force instead of using your brain. Just beating on them with a crow bar is about the worst way to go about this. First there are different kind of concrete pavers. If you have the modern type there are built in spacers which are designed to hold them at a fixed gap. For these it is relatively easy.. Use a margin trowel or putty knife and scrape around the parameter of the paver. Once you do this there are tools you can buy (or make) which slide down on each side of the paver (such as paver claw) and grab under the paver and let you apply an up force. Agree simply using a putty knife and prying won't work and is kind of stupid. If you have more of a brick paver without a built in spacing (which seems to be what you have) it can be a little more difficult. But still start out with a putty knife and running around parameter to try and get a clean gap. Same process, just need to work it a little..

    Why not just drill into the centre of one with a masonry bit, then plug and screw it. Get a claw hammer and directly pull upwards. Then the adjacent one will left easily as it has space to move.

    Ok I’m none the wiser other than knowing you’re an angry chap. Maybe you could’ve vented some of that frustration by successfully pulling out one ☝🏾 paver? Just sayin…

    You haven't a clue what you're doing , a crowbar and hammer are NOT the right tools for this job , there are specialist tools for this job that would get out those 20 pavers in half an hour with no mess ..

    Mark Buckley I’m glad you think so, but since the builder used thin set underneath in between each paver, I’m afraid you’re incorrect

    Afraid not. The pavers were connected by thin set. We tried every tool under the sun and spoke with a number of "specialists" who said there was nothing we could do differently

    yeah your video sucks -unless you’re throwing those pavers in the garbage afterwards ,taking a hammer and crowbar to them is not the proper way to lift them if you plan on using them again if you are raising sunken areas
