How to Remove Old Bathtub Drain 🧰

Фильм және анимация

This video is an easy step by step instruction on how to remove a bathtub drain.
Old and corroded drains can be easily removed using a simple hammer and file. Often on older drains the inner crossmember gets brittle and breaks off. Instead of buying a Tub Drain Extractor tool for $20 that you will only use once, do this instead.
Simply insert the hammer head into the drain and along the side insert the steel file. The steel file has a small cutting edges raised on its longitudinal surface which grip the old drain. While inserted, with your left hand hold the hammer handle while giving it upward pressure and with your right hand hold the file handle and give it right and outward pressure. While applying these pressures move both arms in unison in a counter clockwise rotation. Do this slowly and methodically (so you do not slip yours off the handles and bust your knuckles agains the tub surround). It will require a few rotations with the tools in place for the plumbers putty to release.
Once you have released most of the friction of the old drain you can remove the tools and continue rotating counter clockwise for removal. Before installing the new drain clean the surrounding area.
When installing the new pop up drain, lift and turn drain or tub strainer drain - remove the gasket that come with the product (it is usually only for under the tub where the plumbing meets the bottom of the drain opening). Use a nice thick roll of plumbers putty under the lip of the new drain. Twist the new drain clockwise into the treads and go gently to make sure there isn’t any cross threading. Tighten as tight as possible and plumbers putty should squeeze out from under the lip of the new drain. Remove the putty and test with water. Hope this helps.

I made my own tool with a socket. Grind four notches on the socket so it would fit into the strainer. Then use your ratchet. I keep it in my toolbox for this type of work.

Use a Sawzall or hacksaw blade. Cut a small notch at 10 an 4 o'clock in the top side of the rim. Use a pry bar and turn left, it should rotate easily

Outward tension while twisting counterclockwise. One doesn’t have to pull too hard.
