How to remove / install a shock absorber with this special tool.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is a handy tool to remove and replace a shock absorber retaining nut and keep the shaft from spinning inside the body. Especially helpful if the parts are rusty.

    I always use an offset open wrench and the flat part behind the pliers (above the handles) to hold the flat still. An adjustable wrench works too. Crows foot with a torque wrench for the final turn when tightening.

    great for a frame off F100 restoration but for a 2008 Nissan Versa you can move the flat less than 1 turn, decided to make my own tool to work with a ratchet after looking at what is on the market. Good Demo, if you have the room.

    I use vise grips on the flats that pin against a fender to hold the shaft. But that little tool is the cats meow

    If only I had that much clearance for tools on my 1997 Ford Ranger truck. Even if I could get this special tool onto the top of the shock absorber, it would take two people to operate it - one in the wheel well to turn the outer wrench and another in the engine compartment to hold the inner wrench, because the plastic inner fender gets in the way.

    Lol if I could take the top of my cab or fender off like this I'd have a swell time removing it with no problems. Unfortunately, I don't think I have that luxury.

    Isn't this only needed when the shock top is recessed? I mean when it is accessible, like in your example, can you not just put the correct spanner wrench on the nut and hold the retaining nut by putting on pliers?

    If you're not reusing the shock then there is a much faster and easier method. Get a deep socket that fits the nut, 1/2 or 9/16, and a long extension that fits the socket. Put the extension and socket together then place the socket on the top shock nut. Now grab the end of the extension farthest from the nut and start bending the shock rod back and forth until it fails from fatigue. Done. more time spent getting the tools together than working.

    I just bought this so i can get my old front shocks off to install my new ones and make my lift easier, Do you have any suggestions if you can't get it over the top of the shock due to very little clearance under the fender well. The 15mm thick one will but the longer ones to keep the shaft of the shock from spinning is a tight squeeze and I can't get it seated over top.

  • @ToolDemos

    I’m not shy about taking a grinder to my tools to make them fit. There might be enough ‘extra’ to shave a bit off of that 15mm.

  • @ToolDemos

    @ToolDemos

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Juliana. This tool will work on a lot of cars, but the problem with some Asian cars is the tight clearance. This tool is too long for some of those cars with small access panels for the shock. Thanks for your question.
