How to remove and replace a seized chuck on a Makita cordless drill.

Generally when replacing a chuck on a cordless drill with a left hand center screw, they can normaly be removed with the Allen key method.
But sometime they can be to stiff to remove this way, and modern new drills are general fitted so tight they cannot be knocked of.
Cutting them off like this with a grinder is the next go to method.
It's quick, relatively easy amd dose no damaged to the gearbox.
Some people also dismantil the drill and gearbox to get to the chuck spindle on the inside, so they can clamp it and use a pulling bar.
But this more difficult and risky.
If your careful and take only the minium amout of threads away, it is the best method.

So far I've never reached the point of having to cut one off. But I have replaced a few. You do make it look easy, but that takes a level of experience & confidence I don't have.

I had an old burnt out wee drill, after watching this video I thought I'd save the chuck off it for the craic, what a mission that was, the chuck has a shaft on it so I don't think it's worth keeping, they're cheap to buy anyway, but it was a bit of craic taking it apart to see how it works before I scrapped it. Love the video, I'm flatout watching them, great tv 👍

Only ever had one drill that the giant allen key and mallet worked, all the rest were grinder jobs!

This is a great video I would have never had the balls to try cutting off the chuck with a grinder if I didn't wash this video first but I did exactly what you did and it worked didn't come out as cleanly but it worked thank you

I tried the allen wrench, blow torch, impact driver, and then this, cutting off half the chuck. Now the drill just stopped working altogether before I was able to get the chuck off. I’ll buy another XPH12 or equivalent because I’ve been overall very happy with the makita cordless platform except for their chucks. May buy a Rohm chuck from the start this time.

Any recommendations for a new chuck on a 481? ... used a lot for step cutting stainless, low speed high torque, makita ones last 5 mins! Thanks for the videos.

I notice that the centre thread was damaged when the old chuck finally came off. Will this make the new chuck come loose or does the centre screw keep things tight?

The center screw keeps the new chuck on tight. The cut thread dose not make any difference at all. It was cut along with the old chuck, so the threads are cut clean and the new chuck will screw on easily. Some drill also don't have a center screw, so lock tight can be used ti hold the new chuck on permanently

@@deandohertygreaser Many thanks for the quick reply, I appreciate you are very busy. I had the exact same issue when I cut the chuck off my drill, I caused the same damage as was on your video so I was very interested in what you had to say. I have used lock tight on the damaged thread and on the screw but wasnt sure if I trusted the drill or not: was worried that the chuck might come loose due to 25% of the thread being flat. Your words have been very reassuring. Once again, many thanks and keep up the excellent videos which are fascinating.
