    Thanks for the shout-out. The video was better than deja-vu because I learned a few extra things; putting a dab of red paint on one side of your Chapman ratchet ( to distinguish between IN and OUT I assume), matching set screws on the meshed gears, and hook protection when removing the positioning finger. Like you, after I removed the hook and the positioning finger and saw all the dirt in there I was happy I made the effort.

    Haha, good catch on the rachet paint, Terry. I was surprised by the amount of gunk around the top of the hook shaft bushing. It started me thinking of a way to "floss" under there for people who don't want to remove the hook for cleaning. Thanks again for the motivation in making this video. Take Care.

    Your steady pace and narrative in your approach to this machine is synchronized so well that it stimulates one's curiosity as to just how much simple cleaning can play a part in this procedure. There is nothing more rewarding to any mechanic than that aha! moment when the specific cause of the problem is made visible. It always restores your problem-solving energy reserve and is one of those satisfying events that turns that "trouble" machine into perhaps the pride of the fleet so-to-speak. Nothing demystifies these machines better than the calm, well-narrated approach that is a vital component of your methodology. A very complete dissection of this 'problem area' of many machines. Thank You, again. Mike Kirwan - Kenmore, WA

    Thanks very much. Being a self-taught VSM Mechanic I try to help others with what I've learned. During my Telecom career, I lost track of how many training videos I had to watch and what little help they were. Most were made by a production crew that had never done the actual work. I never expected so many views of my videos, but figured I'd just make them as I'd like to see them. You're kind to recognize the effort.

    Thanks for the video, Andy. I wrote to you and Terry about a problem with my 500a. The thread would get caught on the de-lint pin of the positioning finger. I sent Terry a photo of the positioning finger and He explained that Singer had instructions as part of the "Knit Kit" to grind off the de-lint pin and smooth the corner. So I did that with a spare positioning finger that already had a broken de-lint pin and it fixed the problem. I have read on forums, complaints by many people having the same problem. I have another machine to repair to do the same thing to and so I will do a video showing the procedure (Singer Surgery) 😁

    I remember the discussion. I did not know that the "Knit Kit" included those instructions. I do not have a good understanding of exactly what that Kint Kit included. Years ago a 503A I purchased came with a small plain cardboard box and inside was a brand new hook and a folded paper explaining how to thread the needle differently when sewing double-knit fabric. I thought the knit kit was just a new, better hook and threading instructions. Please do make some videos about the 500A problem and removing the de-lint pin. You'd probably be helping hundreds, if not thousands of owners. Good luck, and thanks for watching.

    OOOh! Perfect timing with this video for me. We recently found a 404 for $10 at our local Goodwill(!) I noticed the hook looked different. It wasn't like the hook in the 403 or 401. Apparently, the previous owner had put in a hook from a more modern Singer. It had a weird part number that I could not find which machine it came from. My best guess is that it is from a early model Touch and Sew. It "works" and everything in the 404, but I want to put in the correct type of hook, and I have a 401 parts machine that has the correct hook! I feel so much more comfortable watching you remove and replace the hook before I attempt it. I won't do it for awhile because I'm sewing with the 403 (lovely machine--it just sews through multiple layers so well) and following this series with my 401. And , I'm looking forward to watching your series on the 404.

    Wow, that's a new one to me, finding a different hook. I guess I am not surprised that it works, but still ... if the machine could tell that story, right? It is slightly tricky to R & R the hook on these models, but very doable as you see. You normally need to retime hook to needle afterward, but you have done that before too! I'm shocked at the $10 price! I looked on eBay just yesterday and saw that the PA style motors are selling for $39 + Shipping in some completed sales, not to mention the tension unit, handwheel, nose cover, etc. that always seem to sell out on eBay right away. The needle bar alone sells for at least $10! A very nice find, Carol, congrats, and thanks for watching.

    On my 500A, the set screws on the hook and drive shaft gears are off by three teeth.Given all the factory did to get these gears to mesh, I am going to surmise that the fault lies with someone who took apart the hook and finger for cleaning and reinstalled it incorrectly. Thanks to your tutorial, I am going to set that to rights.

    If the gears run quietly and smooth I don't think I would change the gear mesh. It may be worn in now and changing it back may make the mesh run rough. You can mark the existing mesh ans then change it back if you do not like how it runs after changing it. I also have used metal grinding compound to smooth out gear mesh problems. It is messy ans you have to clean the compound off completely afterwards but if you have a rough, noisy gear set it can help very much. Hi Andy, I need advice. I have a Singer 404 - regularly oiled/lubed, sews fine. Recently noticed noise from hook gear - sort of creaking sound. Local service center told me I had a lot of play in the gears and it wouldn't be long before they stripped. Would removing and reinstalling the rotary hook/gear help keep this from happening? When the rotary hook is rotating the oil port has sort of an oval track. Do you have any recommendations?

  • @andytubesewing1953

    @andytubesewing1953

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hmm... I've never seen those types of steel gears get "stripped" myself. You can adjust the play in the gear and shaft of the hook anytime you like. Did you see in the video that I found stuff under the hook when I removed it? What's under your hook, I wonder? The hook shaft goes through a flanged bearing and I suppose it could be getting worn. It' seems odd that it is sewing so nicely with all that play in the gears, doesn't it? Creaking sound? Have you had a needle break lately or lose a pin? What if something is stuck under the hook and making the noise? Personally, I like removing and cleaning the hook area parts. It is not that hard to do. You can download a free service manual here: sewingdude.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/singer-401-service-manual1.pdf The service manual explains how to eliminate play in the shaft and gears, remove and replace parts, etc. You can download an extensive parts manual for model 404 here: www.universalsewing.com/images2/parts_lists/all/nijears4.pdf It has every part on your machine listed by name and number with diagrams. that can help if you are looking for replacement parts. Many of the parts on the 401A, 403A & 404 are the same part number. You can frequently find parts for sale on eBay and replace any part you suspected (or wanted to have spare parts for the future) here is just one seller who has hook and gear parts for sale on 8/11/2020 www.ebay.com/itm/Singer-Sewing-Machine-Models-403A-404A-Choose-Your-Parts-Free-Ship-Over-25/163785629050?hash=item2622625d7a:g:RHEAAOSwhCJdNEYp If the hook shaft bearing was worn and you want to replace, you'd probably have to ask a seller specifically for it. They probably do not take it out and list it very often b/c no one buys it. So, C T, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Good luck, and thanks for watching my channel.

    Hey Andy, quick question. If the set screws of the drive gear and hook gear are not aligned, is that a sign that someone messed up when servicing/repairing the machine? My 401A was in pretty rough shape when I got her, so I have no idea if the set screws were misaligned from the factory, or if someone wasn't paying close enough attention when servicing.

  • @andytubesewing1953

    @andytubesewing1953

    I doubt they were misaligned from the factory. If they run smoothly enough I would not worry. Here is my response to this question from Compassion_for_all below "If the gears run quietly and smooth I don't think I would change the gear mesh. It may be worn in now and changing it back may make the mesh run rough. You can mark the existing mesh and then change it back if you do not like how it runs after changing it. I also have used metal grinding compound to smooth out gear mesh problems. It is messy and you have to clean the compound off completely afterward but if you have a rough, noisy gear set it can help very much. Here is the brand I use but I'm sure there are others: www.amazon.com/Versachem-13209-Metal-Grinding-Compound/dp/B00C3Z9EX4 Thanks for watching and commenting. Good Luck. " If the screws look scratched or the slot is damaged it could well have been worked on before and the person was not aware of how to set the timing maybe. Again, if they run smooth and the machine is in time, I don't worry, If the gears run "rough" are noisy or "skitterish" I use the polishing compound with very good results, but man is it messy.

    If the gear is "stuck" to a shaft it is often from hard, dried-up oil. I have put WD40 in the setscrew holes, or alcohol or kerosene to try and soften the oil. I have had good luck using a hairdryer to heat the gear/shaft up to loosen it also. The gear/shafts are steel and can take a good amount of heat. Sometimes a couple of minutes, sometimes much longer, depending, but the gear always gets free.

    Oh Andy - thank you for this video. I now know why the thread keeps catching on my 401. Unfortunately, I took it to a local sew and vac shop to get it cleaned up a bit ago. They mentioned the delint pin, so I said it was okay to remove it. The thread still catches but not as often. After digging in the bobbin, it appears they removed the delint pin without going to the trouble of removing the positioning finger. As a result, the entire corner where the pin was located chipped off. And they left it - ragged edges and all. I know this because the bobbin was filthy and caked with lint. No way they removed it. You seem like a nice guy, so I won’t mention what I think of their laziness. So now a question - I have googled and searched and cannot find that part to replace it. Do you by any chance know the part number. Otherwise, I suppose I could remove it and have someone buff it out. Thank you in advance and also for your terrific videos.

    It's so sad what these places do. You can't say anything that I have not said before about them. I'm sorry you went thru this. The name of the part is "Rotating Hook Bobbin Case Position Finger", and it is part #172207. It can be hard to find by itself as they usually include it with the whole hook assembly, The good news is the exact same part is also on Models 403A and 404 which can often be found for lower prices. When I'm looking for a harder-to-find part like this I go to eBay and see who is parting out a machine. If they do not list the part I see if it already sold and if not I will contact the seller and ask for the part. I often include the name and part number and picture of the part and even where it is on the machine. I've had about 50% positive results where the seller will get the part, list it, and email me back. Many of them said they did not know anyone was interested in that particular part or that it had value. When they do this they seem to overprice it a little, but I get that as they had to make a special effort and I need the part. I hope this helps you and good luck.

    There was a little rust on the hook and I used Rust-Oleum Rust Dissolver Gel Formula as per instructions. It turned most of the hook black. 😩 I tried baking soda paste and then Bar Keeper’s Friend with no results. Is it a chemical reaction that can’t be remedied? I dried the hook and applied a thin coating of Tri-Flow oil as I would usually. I am assuming this discoloration won’t affect how the hook works. I feel like a total rookie.

    @@linuspelt3561 What is a "mechanical" 401 like? Just curious b/c I've never heard of it. One of the things that can cause under looping is lack of upper tension or needle thread tension, so you want to be sure you have the tension unit zeroed out properly. You can see how I test for that starting about 46:00 in this video kzread.info/dash/bejne/l4qAy6d9XampcZs.html Another cause for under looping is if the bobbin case tension is set way too high b/c that pulls the needle thread right down through the fabric. Here is a video about cleaning and setting the bobbin case kzread.info/dash/bejne/eohpurxulby_dbQ.html Maybe start with those two items. Other things that can cause under looping are if the stroke of the check spring is not set properly, or if someone worked on the takeup lever system and did not set/reinstall it properly and it is out of time with the hook.
