    Wait till spring, get a farmers jack. With shovel dig around the base of the stump thank flood the hole you dug with water. Wait 24 hours, let that water soak into the dirt and use a reciprocating saw to cut roots. Find a nice thick root you cut put the famers jack under it and states jacking it up. As more of the roots are exposed the more you cut. Now you’ve eliminated the stump and the roots

    Tug! Thanks for the feedback! I appreciate it! I know there are more ways but nothing in particular went where this stump was so there was no reason to go nuts actually removing it fully. This is just an alternative if the space isn’t needed for any building or structure! Please subscribe to the channel and follow along if you like videos like this!

    A couple of additional ideas for you to consider Homestead Jay. If you pour some Nitrogen granules on the X, before covering with dirt, it will help the underground wood decay. Also, if you have a stump that is not cut to ground level, and time is not a big issue, you can find fungus fruiting bodies in the woods, and lay them on the stump. Fungus, mushrooms, and other wood destroying organisms, like wood borer beetles, will continue their feasting and remove the root system as well. Might take a couple of years, but they will do a complete job.

    Seabrook the Magnificent thank you for the comment! Lots of good information you shared! I have left stumps I’ve cut about 3 years ago in the woods here and now there like dust haha nature does take its course for sure. I wanted to hide this complete because I mow the lawn and this is a walking area to the pool so I wanted to hide it! If this was way was out in the woods I’d let nature chew on it! You don't need a giant saw .A 20 inch bar will go half way through a 40 inch stump from all sides. If it more that twice the length of the bar cut as far as you can then split the sides off with either an axe a maul or your chainsaw..Saw the remainder off. If you cut at a downward angle towards the center it is even better. More depth equals more topsoil that you can put back in the hole.

    You don’t need an expensive chainsaw. Buy a reap reciprocating saw with and some pruning blades, a shove, and some dirt to fill in the void that will be left behind. Leave the stump at about 2-3’, dig around it cutting as many roots as you can as you can as you go. In a couple of hours you’ll be completely stump free, no waiting, no grinding, just have to dispose of the stump and fill in whole and spread some grass seed. Works every time! You can also use the sawzall to trim trees too. It’s an awesome tool, very universal just like the hammer! Everyone should have one. A blade for every use.

    Echo makes awesome smaller saws. I wouldn’t ever grind a stump, especially in a residential yard. Dig around it and cut up the roots with a reciprocating saw and a pruning blade. It will fall over if you cut enough roots up and it’s really not that hard. Those stumps can take a decade or more to even partially rot.

    If you are referring to my adding a little extra oil on the bar and chain with the squirt bottle I do that because over the course of a day of cutting the Oiler gets clogged with debris and this stump was the last hoorah of the day so I knew the Oiler was restricted so I added a little extra juice before cutting the stump. Thanks for watching!

    At the old house we found out that when they cleared the land they just buried all the stumps and eventually we just ended up with a nice 6 foot deep sink hole

  • @HomesteadJay

    Unfortunately that is more common than uncommon. Its cheaper to dig a hole and bury stumps than it is to haul it away and have it mulched/chipped! A stump here and there isnt gonna cause a sink hole but a large lot is scary like that! Ive heard of houses built on lots that were cleared and stumps were buried years ago and all they had was issues!

    I mean either way if you cut it down and let it decay or rip it out the ground the ground will still be disturbed one way or the other prone to becoming "sinkholes"

    @@HomesteadJay it's all about budget. If you have one stump, this method is fine. I'd prefer to burn it since it will get all of the root structure by burning. If you have a lot of stumps, digging them up with an excavator is the best way since you can backfill and compact the disturbed dirt. That way, you won't have any sinkholes.

    WileyDean yeah exactly this was the only one on the yard that needed removal. I plan on clearing a area for my son to play so I will rent some heavy equipment for that and do what you said rip em out and backfill and pack it down with the bucket! Thanks for stopping by!

    That is hard on the chain, lucky you didn't have embedded rocks cutting that low. That does not work for me, suckers will grow out of the stump or roots in a few months then you have a new tree if you don't constantly cut it back. I'll just pull it out with couple of come alongs, roots and all and be done with it.

  • @HomesteadJay

    @HomesteadJay

    Hey Kim! I raked and prepped the area before I cut that low. I dont use my high end chains when I make these cuts for that reason. Another thing too is if you bore cut it like I did then you have little chance of anything stemming from it. I cut this over a year ago and havent seen a single stem come from it. I agree with the come alongs would work in certain cases but this works just fine for minimal tools! thanks for watching!

    This is a horrible idea. No grass will grow here for a long time, plus you will get tons of mushrooms. I also noticed he did not remove the sawdust which will totally screw with ground chemistry for gass to grow. In other words easy may cause more problems in the future. Do it right the first time.
