How to Remove 2005 Honda CRV K24A1 Engine

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Removing of a 2005 Honda CR-V Complete Motor combined with Manual Transmission.
I was able to remove the engine from underneath the CR-V by setting the engine on top of a flat dolly with 4 wheels to roll it out from under the car, I just needed to put the CR-V on very high jack stands for the motor clear. I will include a link to a video with my Acura Integra which I was installing it instead of removing it but same process just reverse. • K24 Installation Haspo...

    If you are following this video in order to replace the engine, it is important to know that when installing your new engine, that the torque converter is to be attached to the transmission first. When the engine is bolted to the transmission, there is an inspection plate that allows you to attach the torque converter to the flex plate on the engine. It is easy to get this backwards, but then you will have a malfunctioning torque converter. It is important that you connect the TQ to the transmission correctly, so research this step thoroughly. The torque for the TQ to the flex plate in an automatic transmission for the 8 bolts is to increase incrementally in staggered order to 8.7 ft/lbs (104 in/lbs). Most of the torques you find online will be for a manual transmission, which is much higher and will strip the bolts. I also recommend using a punch to remove the CV axles from the wheel hubs, otherwise you may damage the threads on your CV axles.

    I had great success removing the ball joints by attaching a clamp as in the video, tightening till it is very snug, but not too tight, and then applying heat with a small butane torch to the underside of the ball joint where the cotter pin came out. Within a minute they both made a popping sound and were free. Also a reminder to remove the axle nuts while the vehicle is still on the ground with tires and parking brake applied. I also had success with removing the passenger side CV axle by removing the one bottom bolt holding the heat shield over the axle, slipping a punch in the space it now allows, and whacking the CV axle 3 or 4 times with the punch, came out fine. Thanks for making this video, it is greatly appreciated.

    @@jsrebuilds3951 You may want to add a safety tip at the beginning of the video reminding people that after they've removed the front CV axles, and disconnected the drive shaft, I believe the vehicle is basically now in Neutral (correct me if I'm wrong). If someone is doing this work on a slope, and they are under the vehicle disconnecting the drive shaft, the result could be catastrophic. You may want to remind them to chock the real wheels, apply the emergency brake, and have blocks as well as jack stands to support the vehicle. Your trick with leaving the tires under the vehicle is also a nice touch :)

    I used the harbor freight 3 tons jack stand because they lift pretty high. If its not high enough you need to carefully get creative to use blocks or something to lift the vehicle higher to it will clear the engine. Its pretty straight forward, I used the jacks to lower the sub-frame and then I placed a dolly underneath to lower the motor and transmission on top off to roll them out from underneath the vehicle. An engine hoist would help to lower the engine on top of the dolly.

    1st just rest your motor on a 4 wheel flat dolly, once it's rested go ahead take off all the motor mount bolts, your going to need a pretty high floor jack. I will send you a link with the Acura Integra I did which was the same process I did to remove this CRV motor. kzread.info/dash/bejne/qKuMpM9-ZrnYZ8Y.html

    Not a mechanic, regular customer here. Do you have to remove the subframe and transmission in inorder to remove the engine?

  • @jsrebuilds3951

    I am not a mechanic as well, I've just removed serval engines myself in the past. I've always find it easier to remove the engine from the bottom of the vehicle especially if you have a lift for the entire vehicle. But to answer your question yes if your removing engine with transmission the way I am in this video. You probably can remove engine without removing transmission but for me removing both is easier and is an extra step. I don't know how the pros would handle this.

    why didnt u pull the front the rwst of the way apart and pull the engine from the front?

  • @jsrebuilds3951

    @jsrebuilds3951

    Because I didn't use or have an engine hoist to remove this motor myself. I only mention and recommended in the video to use an engine hoist was for people's safety and it would be easier for them. If you watched the video, I mentioned I didn't remove any of the AC (air conditioning) components because with my personal experience I could remove this engine without having to undo any of the AC lines or condenser. So basically with that I wouldn't be to remove the engine through the front. This video was created to give people some ideas, extra help (knowledge), and or basically to show people how I removed this engine myself. Also the video was left open for people to choose how they would like or prefer to remove this engine, plus there are several different ways to remove this engine.

    Roughly how long did it take you to pull the motor and get it back in? I'm getting ready to do a k24a2 swap in mine but I use my car for work so I'm trying to estimate how much time I'm going to need to take off.

  • @jsrebuilds3951

    @jsrebuilds3951

    I want to say 1 whole day but if you going to use a k24a2, i believe there are lots things you need to swap out from the old engine to try and make the k24a2 work in your crv. Also the heads are different so there is going to be issues with vtec sensors and things like that, not to mention ecu compatibility.

  • @jsrebuilds3951

    @jsrebuilds3951

    I haven't found anyone atleast on the web who was able to do it successfully. But then again my crv was a 2005 and up. I think 2003 crv is similar to the 2003 rsx so compatibility might work saying that you can use k pro ecu with it. Also if your able to get it to work in a 2003 crv you may have an issue with a check light that will go off because of the reverse lockout on the transmission. There isn't an option in kpro where it can be turned off but I have success installed the shifting mechanism onto my k24z7 transmission in one of my videos.

    I've actually attempt to try and put a k24a2 in my 2005 crv thinking I could make it work but there was definitely a lot of factors that prevented me to do that such sensors, etc.

    @@jsrebuilds3951 I was also thinking of just trying to swap heads only. Not sure yet if it would need 24a2 rods and pistons for clearance, been reading up on a lot of forums but no definitive answer yet. My crv is a 2005 too. I very much appreciate the response!

    Thanks for the video. With the engine removal do you have to drop the engine or can it be lifted out as well. Also is it necessary to leave the trans hooked up for the removal or can the engine come out individually.

  • @jsrebuilds3951

    I dropped the engine from underneath and think the is the easiest way because I didn't have an engine hoist. But it can be lifted out it just takes a little bit more time and requires a hoist. You can leave the transmission in the vehicle but I find it easier to take it out together.
