Here’s the problem.
Most battery chargers have built-in safety features which prevent them from recharging deeply discharged batteries. If a traditional battery is at 10.5 volts or less, an analog charger will remain off because the battery is seen a defective. The charger will remain off because charging a “bad” battery could create an unsafe scenario. The AGM battery may be just fine, but has slipped below the minimum voltage threshold of the charger to turn on.
That’s why it’s important to purchase a modern, AGM-specific charger for your AGM-style battery.
AGM-specific battery chargers have special settings and desulfation steps that help recondition and recover deeply discharged AGM batteries. These are becoming more common, and they work well for all lead-acid batteries, too. They have the additional capability of doubling as a battery maintainer for batteries in storage. OPTIMA offers a Digital 1200 12V Performance Battery Charger and maintainer that enhances the performance of OPTIMA and other AGM batteries, recovers deeply discharged batteries, and extends battery life.
This is the preferred method of charging a deeply discharged battery.
2. Try the DIY Solution
Want to stick to the charger already in your garage?
OPTIMA offers an alternative that tricks your traditional charger into charging the deeply discharged AGM battery. According to OPTIMA, here’s what you need:
Battery charger (under 15 amps)
Jumper cables
A good battery, preferably above 12.2 volts. (It can be an AGM or flooded battery.)
The seemingly dead, deeply discharged AGM battery
A voltage meter
A watch or timer
Start by hooking up the good battery and deeply discharged AGM battery in parallel - positive to positive and negative to negative. Next, hook up the good battery to the charger and turn on the charger. The charger will “see” the voltage of the good battery (hooked up in parallel) and start providing a charge. After the batteries have been charging for an hour, check to see if the AGM battery is slightly warm or hot to the touch. Batteries naturally become warm during charging, but excessive heat may be an indication that there really is something wrong with the battery.
IMPORTANT: Discontinue charging immediately if the battery is hot to the touch or if you hear the battery “gassing” - a hissing sound coming from the safety valves.
With your voltage meter, check back often to see if the AGM battery has charged to 10.5 volts or above. This generally takes less than two hours with a 10-amp charger. Once it reaches the 10.5-volt threshold, disconnect the charger from the wall outlet and remove the good battery from the charger. Now, connect only the deeply discharged AGM battery to the charger. Turn on the charger and continue until the AGM battery reaches a full charge, or until the automatic charger completes the charge process.

The NOCO instructions say to do a full recharge cycle first before doing repair mode. With a completely dead battery, if the Noco won't start the recharge cycle, you can use the 5 minute Force Mode to get it started and then it'll take over automagically into normal charge mode. Once a full charge mode has completed, then run the repair cycle to deal with sulfation of the battery (and make sure you've topped it off with distilled water for a non-AGM sealed battery). 4:19 Blinking green is the Noco on maintenance mode which means the charge cycle is completed and it will float charge the battery as needed if you leave it connected. It says so in the Noco manual.

Make sure the battery is out of the car or the leads are off the battery for desulphate mode. The voltage is higher in desulphate mode.

The yellow top I’ve noticed if it’s under 10.5v it will not charge unless you use the repair mode a couple times once it’s over 10.5v any AGM charger should work, another way I’ve used is to get another optima battery and a set of jumper leads and connect the 2 together - to - & + to + tricking the charger to think it’s over 10.5v just keep an eye and make sure the batteries don’t get too hot, otherwise disconnect them and let battery cool down.

The manual says to run repair after the battery is fully charged. You're supposed to run "force mode" when the battery is below 1V. It's in the manual.

I've read the conditioning process you demonstrated can be done more than once...for stubborn batteries. Just a suggestion...maybe the bounce your looking for still might be in the "Red Top"?

Good video and demo, it was very informative, I wasn't sure if you could run repair mode on a AGM battery, glad it worked. What is your opinion on a PulseTech PowerPulse passive battery desulfator? I have one attached to my BMW E39 battery for the last three years, and haven't had any problems starting the car even though I only drive about 25 miles a week. Pulsetech claims that it uses a patented frequency rather then voltage power spikes to desulfate a battery.

But what about the SOH, even though it was able to recharged, how long will hold that charge. I have a 6V AGM that says 100% SOC but only 25% SOH. Can the NOCO take care of the SOH as well ?

That's awesome, the Noco did the job. But I will never buy the Optima AGM batteries again. They are overhyped & overpriced. I've had at least 4-5 in the last ten years or less. All have failed in 2-3 years time. All running in different vehicles. Even with an AGM charger, they failed to take a charge. They really suck in cold weather. And at more than $200. Plus each, I ain't having it !! 😡

I have a 12 year old AGM battery still installed in my vehicle. Just recently, the battery has begun to give me problems. Do you think this charger can repair it, or do you think the battery is too old and not worth it. To be honest, I'm surprised my battery lasted so long. 😅

Yeah Norco's charger series makes all other chargers obsolete. Worth there weight in gold, they do charge the gold price for the 25 and 50 amp models for some reason.

AGM is lead acid. Confirmed repair mode is for AGM batteries from posting by noco support on a amazon product page question. "Yes. AGM batteries are a type of lead-acid battery, and Repair Mode can be used on them. Other compatible lead-acid battery types include wet-cell, gel-cell, AGM+, maintenance free, and EFB batteries. It can also help desulfate calcium-lead and calcium-calcium batteries. Please note that the battery should be disconnected from the vehicle or application before Repair Mode is used on it."

7.5 after charging? If yes, you have one or more dead cells in the battery. This means the battery is ready for the recycler and is no good. No charger can "fix" a dead cell.

How long does that dead battery last ? Can you trust it? Or will it leave you stranded? Or is it good to go for another 100 miles?
