How to Record Acoustic Guitar | Mic Placement Techniques for Recording Instruments

On this episode of Sound 101, Andrew and Thai Long Ly (recording engineer and producer that knows everything about recording all kinds of instruments) mic up Nathan Kersey-Wilson, a multi-instrumentalist with some sweet acoustic guitar chops! Again we focus on mic placement techniques for recording instruments. This week’s challenge - how to record an acoustic guitar with only 2 mics.
We cover how to pick between microphones, which pickup patterns are best for recording guitar, how to place mics on a guitar, the difference between the sound hole and the bout, and much more. Andrew and Thai end up using a variety of microphones to get this job done. You don't need to have these mics to do this though, you can take these guitar recording tips and apply them to whatever microphones you have. If you use these techniques, you can mic a guitar using any microphone.
So much of recording instruments is based on preference, so tell us what you would do differently to achieve a sound that you like for recording live guitar! Leave a comment below!

Great video, it would be great to hear some samples of phasing issues, and then what it sounds like after moving the mics to fix it.

Could you do some stuff about the best cheap sound proofing solution for an untreated room as when you were talking about it in this one, it got me wondering how you would do the sound proofing in a room like that or just something like your living room, etc. Thanks! The video was very helpful!

Do an episode on connector types, eg XLR, 6.3mm, lemo (and other belt pack conectors) etc. And include information on the pin out and use cases for the connector as well as the type of signal in each conductor and why ist important

Great stuff. Hoping to see how to mic amps sometime (instead of running straight into a board). Would love to mic my guitars. Wait! I would need some Uni Mics that you keep showing me and aren't available yet. OK. I'm done. Going now to get some cheese with my whine. 😀

Please do a video on when it's ideal to conceal the lav mic underneath an interviewee's clothes vs. having it clipped and revealed on their lapel (for documentaries). What are the advantages and downsides of both techniques?
