As a chess player who can read Japanese, I am happy to know that Japan has its own chess version. Definitely giving it a try!

Hi, I am from Poland and do not speak Japanese at all and have 0 kanji knowledge, however like shogi (and go) very much. I think for non-japanese to start is indeed to start with graphics and when you feel already comfortable with the rules, movements and strategy it is good to switch to one character pieces to get more familiar with the tradition and start benefiting from various tutorials. The best way to me to learn is to do exactly what children do at school when learning to write; rewrite one line of each piece character on a paper and you will be able to memorize. Not so easy for rook and dragon, but manageable :)

Yes, that's true, learning everything in one go can be very overwhelming. Wow, you are learning to write them as well? I still can't write them (I can't write Chinese either) 😂😂
