How To Rebuild a Toyota W56 Manual Transmission (22RE) - Complete Disassembly & Teardown
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
HOW TO Rebuild a Toyota W56 Manual Transmission!! Complete tear down and disassembly, removing shift forks, bearings, gears, synchro rings, detent balls, interlocks, snap rings, springs, and synchro/clutch hubs. By the time we're finished we'll be left with the bare cluster shaft, main shaft, and mid plate. A deep dive into how these transmissions work and how to fix them.
This W56 5 Speed transmission is out of my 1986 1st Gen 4Runner, and it had an input bearing failure which sent metal shavings throughout the cases and warranted a complete rebuild. These old Toyotas are known to be rock solid reliable and this transmission is no exception. It survived over 300,000 miles and I drove it home with the bad bearings without breaking a sweat. It was my first time taking one of these things apart, and I have to say it went pretty well! All I needed was a couple of bearing pullers, assorted wrenches and sockets, snap ring pliers, and patience! I think you can keep costs low and learn how to repair your own vehicle by taking on a project like this.
The W56 was found in the Toyota 4Runner and Pickup from 1985 - 1995, both 2WD and 4WD models. Should also apply (mostly) to other W-Series Toyota Transmissions including W55, W56-A, W56-B, W56-C, W56-D, W56-E, W57, W58, and W59. This transmission is found in the Toyota Pickup and 4Runner, but should also apply to later Tacoma and T100 models using the W59 and Celica, Cressida which also use a similar transmission.
Previously, I removed the transmission from the truck and removed the bellhousing, transfer case, and split the cases. That's when I found the blown input bearing and knew I had to take this thing apart and do a complete overhaul and restoration.

Thanks! Yeah totally not worried about it and to be fair it went really well! No issues tearing this thing apart.
i have an R150F in an old gen1 Tacoma... it made it to 341k miles on the original clutch (throwout bearing started the chirping at last) so i finally had the clutch parts replaced. Upon disassembly found that the pilot bearing had roached a nice groove on the input shaft and the input shaft bearing was a bit on the wobbly side. [27-Jan-2o24]
Magnificent
Indeed sir!!!
Nice
Very good vido
Hi again, my 1985 Toyota 4runner SR5 5 speed's transmission makes noise in 1st 2nd and 3rd gears while on the street/road from a stop, it does not make noise in the 4th or 5th or even coasting... any ideas to what it may be? I also replaced the trans gear oil the other day with Redline full synthetic 70w90...... please advise, thanks!
Thanks a lot - it´s very helpfully.
Super video I like you 💯
Pls next, Assembly this gear box

I do. Check the next video
The pads on the 1-2 shift fork should be examined to make sure there is still plenty of meat on them. The 1-2 fork gets used more than the rest of them and if the pads get too thin you will get the dreaded first gear kick out and a new shift collar won't fix it.

The dreaded first gear kick out. Thanks for the tip. I seem to be having that problem in my four-speed.

👍
Inertia is what drove off the gear.

Hey there! Give it some time, YT takes a while to process bigger videos like this one. CC/subtitles should be available by the end of the day, as well as 4K.

@@RM_Garage Thanks for the heads up! Btw, where is this/your garage?
Where are you buying the rebuild kit from? Are you replacing the syncros as well?
@RM_Garage

I was originally going with Cobra but they're out of stock. eBay has quite a few sellers who have Nachi bearings with synchros for $200. Yeah I plan to replace the synchros.

@@RM_Garage I am about to rebuild my W56 as well. I wanted to use Cobra but also noticed they were out of stock. I found these guys out of Redding, CA. They use Nachi and NSK bearings. $ 159 dollars. transpartswarehouse.com/bk162ws-w55-w56-w58-toyota-transmission-rebuild-kit-5-speed-1978-1991.html
