I adore the cello, my whole life, it is the most beautiful instrument ever created, but I know so little about it. I'm in the middle of my life, so I thought, "Why not see about finally learning about the cello?" I'm a beginner, I don't even own a cello -- yet. In grade school I played the flute, but do to a horrible, and I mean HORRIBLE teacher, I never progressed past the first year. I've watched many other beginner videos, and was ready to put this dream back on the shelf, but you made this SO EASY to understand, I'm hooked.❤️

Great video! The way you explain it on the cello strings makes it so easy to understand! Most teachers do not care and a year ago that i started playing the cello my teacher told me to read the notes myself ( i have never played any other instrument in my life i knew nothing about music or reading notes!) he told me do it by yourself it is a prerequisite! It was so hard almost made me quit… but i bought books and did it by myself… i was 47 y. o. That is why i appreciate greatly your video! Thank you please keep making such wonderful videos!!!

I've come a long way with my staccato in the past month, but I know that I can still benefit from your insights on the subject. And I'm sure that all of the other budding Cellists subscribed to your channel would get a great deal of value from it :)))

Moving abroad I am hesitating to start a new instrument because everyhting is in A-G and i am very confused 😥 Especially on other clés (like the 3 different DOs). I am so glad you are mentioning both ways of reading then

What do you think of movable Do vs fixed Do method in solfege? Is the fixed one more useful given it's basically for learning an instrument (the cello in this case) and in determining the absolute pitches? I discovered I really need to work on that to advance more. I believe that working purely based on finger numbers confuses me the second there is a number missing :D Also I need to work more on my ear's musicality.

  • @CelloCoach

Depends on you location. For sight-singing, movable Do is better. For training internals (ear training), movable do is better. For learning modal music, Movable Do is best. For everything else, fixed do is best. Great question! (Cellos use fixed Do)
