Actually the Kabinett, Auslese etc. classification isn’t used for the better German wines. Among those the main focus is on the „Lage“ which is the vineyard itself. You can compare it to the French „Cru“ classification. So you have basic wines (Gutsweine), which don’t come from a specific vineyard. Above those are the village wines (Ortsweine), which come from vineyards all located in one village. Above those come single-vineyard wines (Lagenweine), which can be separated into Erste Lagen (like 1er Cru) and Große Lagen (like Grand Cru). Normally wine labels state if it is a dry or an off-dry/sweet wine.

Cabernet Franc. Done well in Virginia. Try Pollak vineyards, though there are several other excellent cab francs in Virginia.

👍👍 I love the stuff so much, I *made* myself understand the labeling system. That said, the $ is getting kinda steep; I've slid over to Finger Lakes Rieslings for a bit of a break! Cheers!

hiaaa, depends on the wine. Many wines benefit from ageing, if a wine is made in an uncomplicated fruit forward style its probably made for immediate drinking.
