How to read Drum Notation - Daily Drum Lesson
Музыка
In this Drum Lesson you will learn the basics of drum notation. I will keep this easy and not go into too much detail here, since this isn't about being able to sight read. This is about being able to see a notation, decipher it and then play it.

I sure do, sometimes if I am busy it may take a couple of days. But I read everything and answer all questions!

@@DailyDrumLesson Ah that's good! I've been following your lessons on the website, i've come across this one, and there's something i never really understood about notation, it's how a 4/4 bar ends up with 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & notes, or 1 e & a 2 e & a and so on, also, are the snares and bass drum notes always the same? Like drawn the same way? They can't be drawn in a way of a half note for example?

@@heisenberg6481 1. This is really a tough question. Dividing a musical phrase in four equal parts (quarter notes) and breaking this down further down in four equal parts (16th notes) is just something very human. This kind of musical sense can be found through the ages in all kind of cultures and is just how the human brain tends to make and enjoy music. It is nowadays so much part of our way to think, that most other subdivisions just feel kind of weird. 2. Of course you could also draw a bass drum as a half note. But most people will draw a quarter note and a quarter note rest instead, since it is easier in a "busy" notation to read from quarter note to quarter note. But in fact it really doesn't matter. Because unlike other instruments our notes always have the same length (the impact). If I notated a a violin as a half note it would make a sound for two bars and if I notate it as a quarter and a rest it would only make a sound for a quarter note. So here you would have two totally different piece of music. With drums it doesn't matter because I can't play a "long" bass drum hit. Hope that makes it clear and thanks for the great question!

@@DailyDrumLesson Thanks man, number 2 makes all the sense, i thought the same, but wanted to make sure, also, sometimes i see bass drums and even snares as coming down, like instead of being drawn from the top to bottom, a bass drum wwill simply be an inverted quarter note? Other thing i don't understand is with triplets, you have a lesson called ride patterns, if i understand correctly, you don't play them all with the same space between them (it's kind of a swing) because they're mixed 8th notes with 2 16th notes right? But what would be the triplets from a blues kind of pattern where they're all equally displayed? Thanks a lot for this man!

@@heisenberg6481 You can draw different notes in different directions, but that is just for optical reasons and is just a matter of taste. If you write all bass drums stems pointing down it is easier to identify them quickly, but it is harder to see the relationship to the other notes. I mostly write them all pointing up, since (at least for me) it is easier to read. With your second question you are referring to this lesson: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eGmXmc2JZcLffMo.html&frags=pl%2Cwn You are totally correct here and I think it is just a matter of terminology. In that lesson I use two 16th notes and one 8th note. So I play 3 notes per quarter. But those are not triplets (!!!). It is only called a triplet when you space the 3 notes evenly. I have a lesson on shuffle grooves, where I start with a basic triplet groove. You can find this lesson here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/fHhnuaupmLaop9I.html&frags=pl%2Cwn The triplet groove starts at 1:06. Your questions are really great and I will pin our conversation to the top of the comments, so others can benefit from it as well! Thanks a lot, man!
I'm 67 years old and I have a better understanding of drum notation after reviewing this video. Good instructions thanks.
Very well done tutorial. Simple, concise, straight to the point. Well shot, clear, useful. Nice work!
Been playing drums for 5 years now and I know how to read music but it’s always good to go back to the basics
I am super grateful for this. I am new to drumming and my parents want me to learn how to read music before they buy me a drum set. I can now show them what each note means. So with that.. You just earned me a drum set :) Thx!
Dude you've really stepped it up with this one bro. This is easy to understand and extremely well put together. Take a my man because this is something YOU can definitely be proud of 👊🙏

@@DailyDrumLesson the best I've seen!
Two minutes in and this is already exactly what I'm looking for to demystify the whole drum notation thing! (Guitarist/pianist who can read music a little and programme drums a bit but wants to be able to write down drumbeats in a notepad on the fly when I'm at work or otherwise away from my DAW)
“Think of a song as a story, and a bar is a sentence.” You have a gift my friend lol
this lesson was so clean and on point, it felt like 5 minutes
I've been playing for nearly 10 years and I've never even looked at drumming notation before. You made it very easy to understand for someone who isn't used to it. I feel like I've wasted so many years without this skill.
I pretty much taught myself when I was a kid and haven't played since the mid 70s, now that I'm retired I figured maybe try to get back into it and even learn to read a little. Great video, thanks!

love when someone can explain something clearly then demonstrate what they are explaining.... well done !!! clarity never gets old :)
Learning notation simply enables drummer to understand job of other drummers and perform her/his piece of music. Your video is a useful guide. Thanks for shooting I suggest people to be brave, hold paper&pen and notate. It will not take more than 3 times of failure then things will seem more practical

That is so great to hear. Doing a video on drum notation was my most requested lesson, by far.
Im a guitarist primarily but I have been told in college its always good to learn about other instruments too :)
Im 24 and in January i listened to Smells Like Teen Spirit for the first time and was instantly inspired to learn the Drums. Iv been to 2 classes already and i absolutely love it. So much so i continue to learn more online. Thanks for these videos, they are really helpful!
Very easy n simple Explained in video,,, thanks a lot bro
The best teacher on drum notations ever
Holy crappola! I play and learned drums by ear. I am self-taught. Never thought I could get this note-sheet thingy, but this video is so easy to follow! I am actually playing what he's writing! Badass! Thanks for this!!!!
I’ve been a drummer for a year and a half. There’s MANNNNYYYY notes I need to learn.

This has to be the actual best videos to get anyone on the path of drumming
This is a great video. I played drums back in my teens. I'm much older now. The instruction was great. The most comforting thing was your statement that this is not about site reading but about being able to decipher the music and learning to play it.
Hi, I am 54 and just starting to learn to drum. My first drum kit is arriving tomorrow..very excited. I have been watching some other videos, but your's stand out. You start from the basics and progress slowly to higher levels. I know I have to practice each lesson for few days before trying out the next one, but your videos is giving a lesson plan to practice on. Great Job. I might take a few months to cover all that you have taught in this video, but I am truly happy that I found you on the youtube. Keep it up!
This is the BEST video yet! Very clear!!!
Best teacher is the one uses less words.I used to teach windsurfing ,less words I had used better they were understood. Some of the teachers makes things complicated. They teach like they teach to a drummer, but we are not drummers yet.We need to see it on bars while playing.Thank you for keeping it simple with less words.👍🥁🙏
i just got my first drum set and i’m really happy this video exists, now i can read drum music!!
Your teaching makes this so easy to learn this I never had anyone that could explain this in laymen terms...Thank you for doing this! I really appreciate it!

This is totally awesome. Please make this a series, or at least part one of a multipart video. So we can get the full lesson, of all the advanced notation, so there’s nothing left to know after we’re done with the last video. Thanks so much!

That is exactly what I was gonna ask! We must be in the same in our learning.
New to this channel, I just started to play drums a month ago, taking lessons and got my electronic set to practice at home. Checked several channels and I found this one (which is so far the best). You are a very good teacher, I didn't have a clue on how to read notes but you make it easy to understand. I'll stick to this channel to keep learning at home (after an expensive lesson at a studio 😒) 🎵🎶🎼🥁🤘
I learned to play on my own by ear, but you make leaning notes pretty simple; I am teaching myself piano now also and reading piano sheet music so makes it even easier to understand. Thank you!
Thank you so much for this. No one has ever explained to me how to read notes this quick. Literally one time of viewing and I basically got the concept. At least 90% of it. That's bloody impressive considering before this, I never understand it from anyone. I'm too poor to have a real kit. I do have an iPad and I play on it daily for the past 7 years. Easy simple rock/metal songs mostly. Thank you dude.
I'm an intermediate drummer but i'm not aware of these notes. Your videos are amazing and very easy to match my rhythms. Your videos are straight to the point with out any waste of time.
This is perhaps the best video out there to read drum notations. I read articles and saw a few and would still get confused but dude you nailed it! Thank you so much. Hugs!
Thank you for this! Your video is the most helpful thing I’ve found so far! I really appreciate it!

Thanks so much!!! Wonderful explanation!
Thank you so much for the help with this! This is the best beginner note reading I’ve found. You’re a great teacher.
Great Lessons, well explained, beginner friendly......thank you
Thank you so much!!!! Ive been playing over 16 years, and i can play. But i always wanted to know how people play more advanced. I just started 1001 groves. Its gonna be hard but like you said, its a gateway to whatever you want to learn. Cant wait to chop it up. Bless you from los angeles California
This channel is my favorite drum channel for years ❤
Finally! This was so clear. I've been trying to understand this and oh boy can some make it really confusing. I learned musicality through salsa and now started drumming so I have been trying to relate the two. What I still have questions about, we play the clave over one bar but in salsa, they play it over two. This still made it so clear. We tend to just use the 1 è & a as we only use 1 drum (snare or tom) and a couple of weeks ago I was introduced to bucket drumming and it's so much fun. Plus bridges the gap from a single drum back to the drum kit by separating things out to bass (centre), snare (edge) and hi hat (ground). Thanks a mil. I now want to dig out my old electric drumkit and see if it can be fixed up 🥁
Thank you for creating a simple and easy to follow lesson! Fabulous.
You teaching is the best so far Am from NIGERIA and this means a lot to me GOD BLESS YOU KEEP THIS UP
Wow can’t wait to start playing this!
