How to Read a P&ID? (Piping & Instrumentation Diagram)

In this video, we will learn how to read a P&ID which is something that engineers encounter on a daily basis.
P&IDs are schematic representations of pipelines, equipment, instrumentation, and control systems found in process environments such as Oil Refineries, Chemical Plants, Paper Mills, and Cement Plants, etc.
The symbols contained in P&IDs represent the equipment in the process such as actuators, sensors, and controllers.
Process equipment such as valves, instruments, and pipelines are identified by codes and symbols.
As well as devices and pipelines, a P&ID will commonly contain information on vents, drains, and sampling lines as well as flow directions, control IO and Interconnection References.
The Instrumentation codes listed in P&IDs follow a standard format, after some practice in reading P&IDs you will know these codes by heart, but in the meantime, there are many resources on the web where you can download these tables for reference.
The first letter of the code identifies the parameters that are being controlled or monitored for example Flow, Temperature, Level or Pressure.
The next letter is used to define the type of control device being used, for example, Transmitter, Valve or Controller.
The number refers to the logical numerator.
For example, we may have a system with 4 temperature transmitters, it makes sense to identify these as TT01, TT02, TT03, and TT04.
Let’s consider for a moment an instrument on a P&ID named FV01. Looking up the code for this we could tell this is a Flow Valve numbered 01.
Symbols, circles, and lines are used to represent instruments and to show how they are connected to the rest of the system.
Now that we know our device FV01 is represented by a circle, we can also tell from the P&ID where the instrument or device is located.
The presence or absence of a line in the circle determines the location of the physical device. Let’s take a look at how these are commonly represented.
- NO LINE: The instrument is located in the field near the process & operator
- SOLID LINE: The instrument is located in a control room (accessible to the operator)
- DOTTED LINE: The instrument is not directly accessible
The piping or connection lines on the P&ID also tell us about the instrument, for example, a solid line would indicate the interconnection is via pipework whereas a dotted line would indicate an electrical connection.
It is worth familiarising yourself with the different types of connection symbols as this can give you an insight into the function of an instrument even before you know its code.

I remember working with a young student engineer years ago. He was charged with preparing test packs for hydro and was having some difficulty with some of the symbols so he would ask me, a pipefitter. One day I asked where his pipefitter’s handbook was. He told me he didn't have one and had never heard of such a thing. On my next days off, I picked up a handbook and took it back to work with me and I gave it to him. When he started to look through it he quickly realized that all the things he had been asking were contained within the pages of the book. He looked at me and asked, "So why don't they tell you to get one of these in University?" I told him I didn't know. In any event, he was always referring to it from then on. One day he asked me how he could find something in the plant. I told him to use the northerlies and easterlies. Again, a blank look. I asked if he had ever been told about them and he said no, he hadn't. I told him to reserve a couple of hours that afternoon and we would take a couple of isometric drawings out and I would show him how to use the coordinates shown on the drawings. He very quickly learned how to use those drawing coordinates to find what he was looking for and thanked me for my assistance. When I left that job, I never expected to see him again but as fate would have it I ran into him about ten years later on another site. He was sitting at a desk in an office he shared with a student engineer when I walked in. On the top of his desk was a very dog-eared pipefitters handbook and I laughed when I saw it and commented that he still had it. He laughed and told me he never went to site without it. Just then his office mate came in and he introduced me. He told his office mate show me what he had given him. The student engineer reached into a desk drawer and pulled out, you guessed it, his own personal handbook. I asked if he found it useful and he said he couldn't do his job properly without it. I looked back to my friend with a grin and then he said to me with a smile, "We are not too busy right now. What do you say we grab some Iso's and take him out and show him how coordinates work." We did and it was a great afternoon. I guess that is why some teach for a living. It is very gratifying to see what happens when your charge grasps what you take for granted…………

It's really sad that in an industry I was interning at, nobody even cares to look at me. I wish I had more people like you in industries.
I remember learning this stuff in College last year. A lot of us would get confused between P&ID and PID Control (Proportional, Integral & Derivative). Now it doesn't seem so confusing thanks to gaining work experience.

We have some major ones in my line of work, never take for granted that the piping goes in the direction of the drawing. Best advice for a starting point is to find a piece of equipment upstream and downstream of something major to determine you’re going in the right direction. Once you get the hand of them they are pretty simple. Just make sure when you are printing off them you have each page related to the start and end of the process you are following. Nothing worse than being on top of a 500ft structure that’s under construction to realize you didn’t bring all the right sheets. You only learn that lesson once when it’s like 45C in China and you’re a mile from the control room.

Good video, very basic. Our equipment P&IDs are very detailed, and lists the setpoints of controls, signaling direction and type (analog/digital) etc. We also have our valves separated by solenoid and pneumatic or hand control (isolation). Lots to learn but indispensable.

Instrumentation and piping symbols for P&ID drawings are defined in ISA 5.1-2009 (integrated.cc/cse/Instrumentation_Symbols_and_Identification.pdf). 'Not directly accessible' means that in order to access the device, you will need to open a panel or go behind a panel. I am not sure where you saw a "pipe symbol crossed with 2 bars" in the video. If you let me know at what time in the video it appears, I will be happy to help identify it.
With regards to Instrument location, in the Video the dotted line inside the circle indicated that the device is located in the control room while the solid inside the circle indicates that device is inaccessible to the operator. As per ISA-5.1-1984-(R1992) Standard it should be the other way around.

The applicable standard is ISA 5.1-2022. You can find PDF copies of earlier versions on the internet, but legally, the standard needs to be purchased from ISA (www.isa.org/products/ansi-isa-5-1-2022-instrumentation-symbols-and-iden).

"Not directly accessible" means that you cannot walk up to a panel and physically touch or manipulate the device. You have to pull out a rack, walk behind the operating panel, open an enclosure, etc. This is an older term, but it is still appropriate for field-mounted devices.

For a fluid bed r4eactor, it is usually advantageous to put a back-pressure controller on the outlet stream of the reactor to maintain a constant pressure inside the reactor.

The part of circle with dots or solid line , I dont understand , what do u mean by indirectly access & in field ? For example pressure transmitter (PT 44 ) with solid line

He didn't say Indirectly. No line: In the field means somewhere on the factory floor, usually close to whatever it's controlling or reading. Solid line: Not directly accessible by operator could mean it's inside a locked panel or access is only to the engineer and not technicians but can be accessed if needed.

It has to do where the *process indication* is displayed - if at all. No line means that an indicator is available on or in the vicinity of the equipment. The dotted line means that the process value is indicated in a control room. Solid line means there is no indication provided for an operator to check. It is utilized by the control system, but you cannot access it without pulling the information directly from the control system. So, PT-44 has no indication provided within the plant - either on the equipment or in the control room. If you want to monitor it you have to pull it off the control system.

Thanks. I try. Something else everyone should keep in mind is that P&IDs will look slightly different from plant to plant. They don't vary much, and with a little bit of consideration you can understand any of them. But there are different standards that plants will adhere to as their official code of record. And even if they abide by the same standard, they may adhere to different revisions of that standard.
According to ISA (integrated.cc/cse/Instrumentation_Symbols_and_Identification.pdf) solid line represents a control room (or accessible to operators), and the dotted line as inaccessible. Can you please clarify?

Thank you for your question. A solid line through the "bubble" indicates the device or controller is "accessible to the operator" in their normal monitoring location. This would be in front of an operator terminal (HMI) in a control room, on the front of a control panel or operating board, or at a field location like a wastewater system "hut". A dotted line indicates an "inaccessible location" which is not a normal operation location, like the back of a panel or in a control closet. I hope this makes the use of these symbols a little clearer.
I have noticed that there are multiple controllers in the P&IDs I have encountered. These controllers control the various process variables(Temperature, Pressure, level, flow). With this distribution of autonomous controllers in the diagram, is it safe to say a plant uses DCS or multiple PLCs(ie one plc for each process variable). I understand PLCs can be used as DCS and in that case, does one plc control just one process variable?

Hi there, Thank you for your question! Yes, you are correct. You can have multiple PLCs controlling one process at a time or several PLCs controlling multiple processes simultaneously. It depends on your process, the type of PLC and manufacturer you pick, and the memory and I/O boards you install in your PLCs. I have a question hope to get answered. Is a pressure indicator (tagged as PI in P&ID) the same as PIT? I'm talking about the type of signal they send.

No. Per ISA 5.1, PI =- pressure indicator (local indicator, no signal to control system) PIT = Pressure Indicating Transmitter (local indication and signal to control system - either voltage or current) PT = Pressure Transmitter (no local indication [blind] and signal to control system - either voltage or current)

Any software indication for creating a P&ID diagram?

AutoCAD P&ID, SmartPlant P&ID, Microstation, etc. Most CAD software suppliers offer libraries and overlays to facilitate the construction of P&ID's. You could do it in Visio or another drawing package, but it may be a little more cumbersome.

Any drawing package can be used to develop a P&ID. The two most common are AutoCAD and Visio. There are others as well, such as CADWorx, SmartDraw, MicroStation, eDraw, SolidWorks, and CREO. Many of these are expensive, but some free or more affordable packages are out there.
