How To Re-Pressurize Your Reverse Osmosis Holding Tank

The number one reason for low water flow from a reverse osmosis system is due to the holding tank losing its air pressure. This video describes how to service your RO holding tank and re-pressurize the tank to the proper air pressure.

I've watched a dozen of these "How to Re-Pressure a R/O Tank" and yours is the ONLY one I've seen that fully addresses a ruptured bladder. "If you have water coming out the air pressure valve or air coming out the water valve, it's time for a new tank." Unfortunately, that is my problem, but thanks to your video, I know what to do about it. Thanks!

You are awesome! Thanks a lot for putting this on KZread. I called GE and they didn't even know about the storage tank pressure issue. They said to just buy a new one for $120. My 7-year-old son and I did your trick in about 15 minutes. Now, we are so happy to have water again!

I read the manual and watched two other videos, Yours was the only one that made clear (really clear) that the tank must be completely empty of water; that if not , remaining water coming out of the shutoff valve on the tank could be emptied by pumping in air, and that the right PSI before the tank is back on line is 7. Also, you explained how do determine whether the bladder was damaged and the tank would need to be replaced. It's interesting how these little details matter!

That was the BEST!!! Our water system without pressure had me turning it off and on 8 times to fill my coffee pot with water! My husband, who is busy watching T.V. and convincing me it wasn't the old filters needing replacing, needed to realize how much we needed to fix it. So I began buying gallons of arrowhead water from the store...get him in the pocket book! No-- that didn't work (and I had to carry them all from the car because as I explained, he's busy. Wait!! Google it! I recently removed a glass shower door doing the same. But now my problem is, how do I make him think he thought of it? :) I do love the dear man-- he works so hard. But I REALLY loved your helpful video-- thanks so much...nice to have a man around the computer!

We have a Kenmore RO system. Gradually, the amount of water dispensed has decreased until it is difficult to get a full gallon out at one time. Removing the tank requires removing the plastic sink drain lines. Fortunately, the storage tank was not behind the disposal! Its manufacture date is 2013. The Kenmore has a pressure fitting on the top and the Schrader valve on the bottom side, but you probably know that. I checked its pressure with a high quality, digital, pressure gauge and it read zero. The tank was initially quite heavy. Turning the tank upside down in our utility sink resulted in very slow drainage of the water and it had to be tilted to allow air to enter it. Pressing in the valve pin caused the water to exit very quickly. If the bladder was intact, then I would expect that there would either be no effect or actually less water draining. As we've experienced occasional parts failures with these RO units, we purchased several of these units before Sears went under, so I'm installing a "new" storage tank, but this one was actually manufactured in 2011, so it's technically older, although never used before. On a sad note, while this is a very useful video, I notice no responses from you to people's many comments or questions for you.

Thanks for the video. I checked the owners manual to my RO system and it said that the tank pressure should be between 5 & 12 lbs. I went for 10 lbs. because I keep my RO in the basement by the water softener where it is easier to service. It is cooler in the basement than under the sink so I went on the high end of the range.

My Amtrol RO4 just failed after 19 years. Poor pressure at the faucet led to me determining water leaking from the schraeder valve while trying to take pressure readings. The water leaking from the schaeder valve is due to a ruptured internal rubber bladder which, in a properly functioning tank, separates the water at the top of the tank from the pressurized air chamber at the bottom of the tank (where the schraeder valve is).
