I have worked on many of these X3X units that actually had the dial pointer missing. I have used a tine from a clear plastic fork, bent it with heat and it works fairly well. Next time, I will attempt a 3D printed one! Great videos - keep it up!

I seem to recall from my dad's pioneer receiver, which I now have, but it's been in the box for years, the original dial pointer was actually pink, and it really contrasted with the blue of the rest of the dial. If you 3d print a pointer, it's not going to look like the original at all. You'd be better off getting a piece of plexiglass or perspex sheet and cutting it into thin strips. Then sand the whole thing to optical clear (or maybe flame polish it), and cut the 45 degree corner on the bottom. It's the reflection off that internal surface that makes the pointer visible. The whole thing is essentially a light pipe. If you 3D printed it, the light would come from everywhere, not just from the reflection of the angle of the bottom of the pointer.

I just finished my first dial pointer lamp replacement. A few suggestions; First just brake off the pointer to start with, you're going to do it during the procedure and if it flies off in your work area, you may never find it. Second, I used my soldering pencil to enlarge the channel in the black lamp holder to accommodate the resistor on the led. Good Luck!

Swell video of a great receiver line. My favorite of all the series. My first "component" receiver in 1974 was the SX-434. I use an SX-434 in my kitchen hifi system, it powers a Nakamichi BX-1 cassette deck and Synergistics S12B and Boston Acoustics A-40 speakers. Excellent instructive and good reference video. Well thanks for this. I have a 737, inherited from my Dad 30 years ago and he had is quite a while before that. Had to have it recapped about 4 years ago but other than that its been great. It runs 24x7 under my computer desk, just for computer output. A bit ago, I looked under my desk and most of the dash illumination was out. Put off fixing it until a few days ago, had a power failure and the unit would not power on after that. The main fuse you can get to from the back was blown, replaced it but no joy, opened it up only to find a second fuse in series with the one I replaced soldered in under the board blown. Solder a new one in and all was good except all the burned out lights. So followed your video here, and replaced 7 light tubes with LEDs. Wow love it. Your directions were excellent even though my unit was slightly different from yours I adapted. So I did all you did right down to breaking the indicator. Lets hope the glue job works.

@@AHFixItGreat video...it answered so many questions I have. I Have a Pioneer SX-1010 that was completely restored about 2 years ago. The tech broke the dial pointer and glued it back a little crooked...it bugs me still. Now I know I can just tweak it until it's straight. The dial lamps were supposed to have been replaced, but they're going out one after the other. Keeping the original colors are important to me as well. He also used some cheap caps on the tone control because his favorites were not available...when the bass is turned up a little too much, the bass drum sounds like a cardboard box...not sure what can be done about that. It's pushing a nice pair of KLF-10's. Other than that it sounds gorgeous. Thank you for this informative video.

Gosh, I’m glad replacing the indicator bulbs on most other Pioneer gear is not nearly as much of a pain as was 20:42 your experience here. I just relamped my beloved Pioneer TX-9500 MkII tuner with warm white LEDs sold by a vendor on eBay. They all fit very easily but they were moth-ray bright! I had to experiment with large value series resistors 20:42 to get the brightness down to where it was originally and to match the LED VU meter lighting on my Luxman integrated. I initially wanted to use incandescents, but I discovered the stereo indicator bulb was driven directly by the FM multiplex decoder chip, probably now unobtainable. Tiny incandescent bulbs available today draw way more current than the 30mA specified for the stereo indicator bulb in the service manual. A bulb drawing too much current from the chip may fry the chip. LEDs shouldn’t be a problem here. Good luck!

I recently did this operation, and of course, broke the pointer. It turned out to be an easy fix. The small black piece that holds the pointer has a rectangular slot that the pointer originally was installed into. You can take a small flat blade and push the broken pointer base out leaving a clean open slot. Then, just insert the broken pointer piece into the slot and you are good to go. On mine, it was such a tight fit, glue wasnt needed. Yeah, you lose a 16th of an inch off of the original pointer length, but small price to pay in my opinion.

At the end is where a nice big cup of Starbucks would come in handy. LOL Or, instant. Whatever you got. I have a couple of Kuerigs around this house for exactly this purpose. Cheers! Nice work bro.

I think you can remove that STEREO indicator bulb without breaking it if you pull it from the front (instead of pulling it from the back). At least it worked for me while replacing the defective AUX indicator bulb on my SX-737. Anyway: awesome video! Thanks for sharing it!

watching this.. I was thinking while pulling from the back to take a pencil with an eraser, use the eraser end to give a gentle push rearward from the front at the same time. It's great to all share ideas here and see what works !

Yes…use incandescent as original… problems with pointer as well as headphone inputs… my plastic jelst fell apart … used gorilla glue on pointer.. looks almost perfect… Great channel!

Great video! Just thinking, if that plastic piece breaks, it should be very possible to be replaced with a new 3D printed substitute that is also softer.

When you change the dial led, is there a polarity on the wire ?

Did you find the LED have as much light spread in the tuning meter or did the incan fuse bulb actually disperse the light better in that spot ?? I'm wondering if i should leave the meter lamps alone since they are not out or dim.

what was the final color you decided to go with for the dial and meter bulbs?

I know this is one of the older videos, but just wanted to throw out there that it's not an issue getting the aux, stereo, etc. bulbs out from the plastic housing on higher end models such as the SX-737. It's just glue. Use a heat gun, pull the wires while you heat gently but firm, and they will pop right out.

Just tried to prep the dial light on my 636 for a replacement bulb that’s coming in the next couple days. The assembly is just too tight, I couldn’t even get the bracket loose with a really thin box cutter blade. Kudos to those who have done this successfully without busting the pointer, but I think I may just leave it as it is, and include the bulb when I sell the receiver so the new owner can try it themselves and let them bust it 😅

Sorry you broke the pointer.. To fix that, get some model glue, Testors orange tube stuff. (Super glue is too brittle and will not transmit light easily.) Cheap and easy. It is a gel, and if it is completely broken off, it will stick well. There is also a semi liquid Testors glue bottle that would also work well, though it does not set as quickly, it will get into cracks easily so you would not have to break it off completely and sets fairly clear so the light would go through the pointer well. Mind You, you'll probably need to hold it for a few minutes until it sets. You also need some smaller jewelers screwdrivers if you need to bend those tabs back. Bending the whole plate is not a good idea and much harder to get back into position.

Maybe in other electronics but most of these solid state receivers work with "low" voltages that aren't terribly dangerous to us. I have never had to discharge a filter capacitor on a 1970s solid state amp by doing anything but waiting. Just check with your multimeter and if it's like 1 or 2 volts you're good to go

Get you a little ceramic power resistor. 10 ohms or something. Hold it with a pair of pliers or tweezers and let it drain. Wear glasses! Check your voltage first! All that. My dad used to pop the ones in a car with a flat-head screwdriver. Because he was a goofball. LOL

I'm new to watching your channel. You specialise in Maranz and Pioneer. Is there a particular reason for this?

The green handle screwdriver is not Phillips head, it's the similar, but not exactly the same (Japanese specific) JIS. Best to use JIS on products from Japan. Yes, I'm the guy who told you about it.

the super glue did not work on the lamp socket i had to buy a used one, almost broke the one next to it just pulling on the wire, a piece flew out - these things are time bombs.

Ouch!

do not break the ponter - i have seen this mentioned in many videos - I broke a sx880 lamp socket last week - they are so so brittle - never take them out if you can.

That's scary - I have an SX-880; one-owner. The bulbs are probably originals. If the sockets are so brittle, is there a way to better support the socket before trying to remove the bulbs?

plastic gets brittle with age...put some silicone on it to soften it up and get the old bulb out!

Also, do not get into a "that's good enough" attitude, like with the pointer wires on top of the slider. Like Mike says: "make it right". You should unsolder the wires at the splice, feed the wires thru the top of the pointer, then re-solder. Believe me, you will remember that botch job your whole life, and it is forever on yt.
