How to Put On a Kilt Outfit - Head to Toe Complete Guide

Rocky, owner and head kilt maker of USA Kilts in Spring City PA, walks you through how to put on all the various parts of a full kilt outfit - also known as Highland Dress, Scottish National Dress or Highland Wear. This is how to wear a full kilt outfit with all the accessories. We chose to show a tweed kilt jacket for this demo since the Argyll jacket and Prince Charlie jacket do not require color matching and are therefore a bit easier.
* In this video you will learn how to...
- Put on Ghillie Brogues
- Put on Kilt Hose (kilt socks) and Flashes (the garters that keep your socks up)
- Put on a Kilt Belt and adjust it to your waist size
- wear a sporran and how to adjust the sporran chain
- How to color match a tweed jacket to your kilt
- Wear to place a Sgian Dubh
- How to choose the right shirt for your kilt outfit
- Where to place the kilt pin

This is JUST in time. The largest Highland games in North America is set for the 21st of this month. I'm told there will be multiple vendors attending, which means a great opportunity for shopping.

Rocky Sir, you have just done a wonderous thing this day. Removing the mistery and fear relating to Kilt wearing that a great many men have, not least the mysteries regards to what is under the kilt. A huge thank you from England.

A little note for kilt pin placement, I usually like to have the pin sit on an intersection of the horizontal and vertical lines near the corner of the apron. I find that having it sit on an intersection helps draw the eye to it, and it just feels right in my mind.

Just watched your video. very good... But... Here (over the pond) in Scotland. The best way to make sure that your kit is sitting right has it's hard to see it. Is the A: have a large mirror to dress in front of. B: Go on your knee's. It SHOULD sit 2 inches above your knee. It does not matter about how high it is above your belly button has no one will see the top of your kilt has you will have a vest and jacket over it. (Some people have a shorter trunk than others. But we should all look / dress the same). But everyone will see how high it is above your knee. Your belt trick I have never seen before. But I tried it.... Dam it works! Wearing the belt with a vest has always been open to many, many, many long talks. And when there are long talks, there is drinking involved (I've seen some of your other video's. So you know where I am on this). And has a clansman. I hope this will be a long conversation for years to come. When you wear a vest you don't need to have the belt. It will not be seen that much. But people do wear it with their vest has later in evening they know that they will be having a `long conversation´ way into the night and at some point the vest will be off. The other thing is when wearing a full dress sporran. A full dress sporran is a little bigger and has metal at the top and this can bang on the belt when sitting down. So this is more of a personal thing. You are spot on with how to set-up your sporran chain!! But there are so many that still don't know this. The holes at the back of the kilt are for the belt, this is why it is of a large size it fit the belt. And of cause we pass the sporran chain there also. Spot on with the kilt pin. I have seen so many try and put it into both layers.

Now as a Scotsman you need to review the extension buckle for the kilt as we get old perhaps the waist fluctuates 😮 It is more cost effective than a new kilt by far .... worth reviewing for those that have given up wearing but don't know an alternative.

No, it should be the same if you're wearing the same length kilt as the men. I believe the idea is to have a clean uniform appearance. There may be a few differences in the jackets cut, but you'd still put it on the same ... I say with no experience piping.

NOT recommended. If you pin the aprons together, it creates a small risk of a tear if your apron catches on a doorknob or a chair arm. It likely won't happen, but if it does it could be disastrous. Also, you want the kilt to be able to flex and move. The aprons should not perfectly overlap at all times, they should be able to move against each other and spread when you sit down or take long strides.

It's believed there's a historic precedence for pinning both aprons together, but that's inferred from looking at photos from the turn of the last century, where we see kilt pins being worn much higher (like in the mid-thigh area). You wouldn't want to pin through both aprons in the position where they're typically worn today, as mentioned by Ian, you're at a much higher risk of tearing the fabric if you suddenly find yourself needing to be very athletic. These days, the kilt pin is sort of an optional wind weight that keeps the front apron from flapping too much in the breeze, and is an accent piece.

For a special reason I would need to have the kilt length to be no higher than the bottom of the knee. (No option to wear it much higher than that, so please do not suggest that option.) Realizing that it would not be an ideal length, how bad would that length look?
