To stop your dog from licking themselves after surgery or to protect a sore spot, you may need to use a protective collar.
In this video, PDSA Vet Nurse Nina demonstrates how to put a plastic, fabric or inflatable cone on your dog:
Step 1 - Distract your dog
Whichever collar your use, distract your dog with a treat when you put it on.
Step 2 - Protect their eyes and ears
Step 3 - Check their collar is not too tight
When the collar is secured, you can make sure it is not too tight by placing two fingers between their collar and their skin.
Step 4 - Make sure they can’t reach their wound before you leave your dog unattended, make sure they can’t turn around and reach their wound while wearing the collar.
Step 5 - You can use a recovery suit as an alternative to a protective collar. They’re often really effective - you just need to make sure that they have holes in all the right places so your pet can go to the toilet.
