Puns are amazing, I don't understand why people think they are so great and above it all because they don't like puns; puns are top notch Especially now, where everything is simply referential. Puns are great, and can sparkle ones words But i totally agree, when they are forced it really takes the wit out of the equation and just makes them dry So I can understand when people don't like those sorts of puns

In the part where your examination of overselling a pun can rob it of its inherent comedy, it's telling the example you used had me doubled over laughing my ass off. Just the pun payoff, holding on the moment like it was the greatest mic drop of all time, the slow push-in on the face, the misguided anticipation of waiting for laughter that will never come, Sooo Good. I like your purposeful use of irony here. Oh, btw: if you need an ark to save your pet, not to name drop, but .... I Noah guy.

I think you've hit the nail on the head with the comment about forced puns and maybe that's the connection with the bad reputation. Perhaps society is reluctant to reward any behaviour that seems forced. From puns to political candidates, we're more comfortable (obsessed?) with perceived "naturalness" or "authenticity". Anyway, thoughtful video. Oh, what the hake...I can salmon up a few puns before I go, it's not like I'm reinventing the whale, right?

Puns are amazing when they are clever and subtle. They rely on your audience to be following what you are saying closely and help relate disparate ideas to each other. What people do today is just shitty comedy. Puns that require you to pause before saying them, or give everyone the "ehh" or suggesting glance are insulting to your audience and attention seeking. Puns which don't actually cleverly tie two ideas together to create a more cohesive whole are just lazy (how is renaissance and pens related? How does this relationship elevate the sentence?). In the Peter-Rock pun, this elevates the sentence because it points out the fact that Peter is a rock, and thus a stable foundation. It adds new insightful meaning to the sentence rather than just showing that you realize two words sound similar.

Your last point about puns in titles is spot on. One thing I greatly enjoy about reading is the sudden realization that the title has a second meaning. I have one book called Levi’s Will, dealing with a young man rebelling against his iron-willed father (Levi). Only after reading the book did it dawn on me that the main character’s name is Will. It’s even mentioned in the book that people in his hometown distinguish people with the same name by referring to their father (Aaron’s John, Mose’s John, etc.). Another book whose title I love is Star Wars: Dark Force Rising by Timothy Zahn. You assume that “dark force” is a generic term for the evil at work in the story, but as you read the book, a major plot point eventually revolves around a missing fleet of ships nicknamed the Dark Force. The clever titles make already great books even better.

Pixar made the two best puns this side of Shakespeare imo. 2nd Place: Naming the generation ship in Wall-E The Axiom. They had to know that some hard sci-fi minded fans were going to point out that the ship was not particularly realistic. Most people don’t know what “axiom” means, so just assumed that it was a pretty, futuristic nonsense name. But anyone likely to criticize the believability would recognize that they’d already considered the objections and said Just Go With It. Flattering and admonitory at the same time, only visible to the people who need to hear it, just a gorgeous pun. 1st Place (spoilers?): The ending of Toy Story 3. I don’t often like the literary device of Deus Ex Machina, BUT the little green aliens have worshipped *The Claw* since the first movie. Them getting sidetracked by the giant crane Claw was a tiny throwaway moment before the final action sequence. Then when they swoop in and rescue the other toys from their inescapable doom with very little foreshadowing, it becomes a literal (in-universe) God In The Machine enacting a God From The Machine. A subtle, meta, self aware pun *ten years* in the making. *chef’s kiss

it's a pun because, going into it, you think it's a movie about the King's famous WWII speech to the nation. But you learn that really it's about how the King got over his speech impediment. So the phrase "the king's speech" refers to two different types of "speech"

Puns can also be used to get the author's themes across: in Hunter x Hunter, right before Netero kills himself to detonate the bomb that was implanted in him to kill Meruem, he says that Meruem underestimated "humanity's infinite potential for evolution." However, in Japanese the specific word that was used has two meanings, that for evolution and for malice, and both applicable in this case. It's meant to highlight humanity's ability to continually grow via new advancements in technology and science but also the fact that humanity will also make new weapons to kill each other with

One absolutely astounding use of puns I saw recently was in season 4 of Bojack Horseman. The way Bojack's mom answers when talking about the "sun" when Bojack thinks she has finally remembered her "son" adds so much to the moment when she actually does. It's not just foreshadowing.
