How to publish a book (and actually earn a living as a writer)

Make sure to grab the updated publishing guide I have available on my blog: ⚡☕⚡bit.ly/2LSykMF ✍☕✍
This is part 2 of a 3-part series on how to write, publish and market your book. I discuss traditional vs. self-publishing, designing books and uploading to print on demand services like Createspace or Lightning Source (and which is better), and also a little about how to launch and market.

Hey there - I'm Derek Murphy. I'm a fine artist who became a book cover designer, then started writing young adult scifi and fantasy. I've spent almost 20 years living abroad, have a PhD in comparative literature (revolutionary politics in Paradise Lost), and have been featured in CNN for renting castles to use as writing retreats. Although I'm not working with clients anymore, I've built a ton of resources to help indie authors write, design and publish bestselling books.
On this channel, I talk about writing, publishing and creating personal freedom with unconventional business strategies and providing value. My videos are unpolished and a little raw, because we travel full-time and I focus on content, not production quality.

Interesting thing about deadlines - most (good) editors book months in advance. Booking with an editor is a great way to create a hard deadline. It's a lot of pressure, but it works.

Honestly, this video has tons of useful info for us, newbie writers! It is interesting that you suggest putting your book out there for free, before you get feedback and fix all your mistakes - and then put it back again with a price.. But, don't you lose many potential buyers that way? I mean, once your book is out, it is easy for someone to copy and paste it and spread it all over the net. I don't know why people would still buy the book, if they could find it for free online (from some illegal source). Thoughts? Thank you for your time!

This is some of the most helpful information I've seen on the self-publishing process. I've published one book and did some things right, but most things wrong. This will help me do most things right from now on. Also, the idea to put books on pre-order to have a deadline is gold!

Great video Murphy. Very helpful and informative and I thank you for this. I appreciate you have done your hair professionally cause most people on KZread look like they just came out of bed without scripting while their cat just pressed the record button. They have no idea about erase and do overs.

When you said you gave yourself 30 days to write a book I thought, man does this dude hate himself? xD Great info, thank you for making this video series! I am so excited to start looking for publishers, even if it means rejection haha. EDIT: I wrote that halfway through, you've convinced me to self-publish haha.

breezter i think it's stupid to give yourself 30 days. I'm been writing my book for over a year and I'm am proud of it. It you give yourself a time limit your work quality decreases. I am personally proud of my novel.

A book in 30 Days? Wow! Does that include editing? I actually wrote my book very quickly, but the editing took the longest. Great videos, btw!

I didn't have a lot of money for a professional editor, but I sent out a memo to several local universities with good writing programs asking if there were any grad students interested in editing. I was lucky enough to find a great guy who went above and beyond for very little money because he wanted the experience. I also sent a sample to an actual professional editor and found her feedback to not be as helpful and it was more expensive. Just an idea for those who want to save money on editing and don't mind the risk.
