How to protect your wealth from the new Labour government

So as expected, we now have a new Labour government and it’s likely you are going to need to protect your wealth.
In this video I’m going to go through some of the rumours and what could possibly be coming down the track. I’ll also share what steps you can take to get yourself ready to protect your wealth.
The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) reported recently that the UK has the highest debt level for over 60 years with a huge amount of spending going on paying the interest on that debt as well as welfare bills.
Public services are seen as struggling.
So, the IFS indicate that it’s inevitable tax rises are needed. Unless we plan to shrink the state and cut public services. That doesn’t seem likely as the recent trend seems to be a bigger and bigger state.
There’s an expectation that it’s the government that should do more and get involved in more.
Now, this video isn’t necessarily a dig at Labour. I could have filmed something very similar had the Conservatives remained in power as we currently have one of the highest tax burdens for over 70 years. Something the Conservatives have presided over.
But it is Labour now in power, so we have to focus on them.
Already, you can see that taxes have to rise somewhere as even part of their ‘first steps for change’ includes recruiting more doctors, border security, police and teachers.
Labour have said they will not increase Income Tax, National Insurance or VAT.
First of all, we can’t believe any promise from any government. It’s stupid to make them. Even if they had all the best intentions in the world on keeping their promises, circumstances change.
Who knows what’s about to happen next in the world. Few would have predicted a global pandemic a few years ago.
When circumstances change, plans have to adapt so don’t rely on Income Tax, National Insurance and VAT not increasing.
Also, get ready for a comment along the lines of, “now we can see the books, the state of the public finances we have inherited is much worse than we realised”.
It’s actually pretty certain you will be paying more Income Tax in the future anyway by virtue of the fact Income Tax thresholds have been frozen. As you are paid more, earn more interest and dividends in the future, more of it will fall into higher tax bands.
So where else might Labour get creative with the tax system.
- Capital Gains Tax
- Inheritance Tax
- Pensions
Steps to take to protect your wealth
It’s a good idea anyway to make sure you have a globally diversified portfolio for your pension and Investments.
I would be very wary of holding too much of your investments in small AIM listed shares that qualify for Business Relief. If your goal is to avoid Inheritance Tax then you should look at a diversified approach which could mean, more spending, gifting and whole of life insurance.
As for property and investments that you were planning to sell anyway, you may want to do this sooner rather than later.
On the pensions front, until we hear otherwise, it still makes sense to contribute as much as you can, particularly if you benefit from higher rate tax relief. It’s never a bad thing to do this earlier rather than later as the longer your money is invested the more chance it has for better returns.
I wouldn’t advocate taking the tax-free cash lump sum yet because as soon as you take it, you have locked the 25% forever. If you don’t need the money you are going to have to put it somewhere and you will then likely start paying tax on it anyway.
If you are really concerned, perhaps start phasing some of your tax-free cash but only if you need the money and aren’t just going to hold it in cash.
Also, get things organised so you are ready to move quickly if needed. This could mean consolidating pensions into one that allows ‘flexi-access drawdown’. This ensures you are ready to withdraw money quickly if needed.
Of course, at this stage nothing is certain and we won’t know for sure whether any of these rumours will be true until something is announced.
You would like to think that were any major changes to be announced, we would be given time before any deadline was imposed. However, we can’t be certain this will be provided.
I’m not one for recommending you make any big long-term impacting decisions before we know more facts. You could end up damaging your wealth even more by just acting on rumours.
What I would say is that you need to remain vigilant and flexible. Don’t have all your eggs in one basket.
After 14 years of Conservatives one thing is for certain, expect change.

I worked like a dog all my life, I made enough money to retire comfortably at 50 years old. I never buy a new car, I live in an ex-council house, with no mortgage, and have invested the max in premium bonds. I done virtually everything in life I ever wanted, travelled the world, and have a great family with grand kids. Now, I managed my money very carefully, and watch in horror, as one government after another, blow our money on their idiotic schemes and pour money into their own pockets, if the UK was a business, we would be bankrupt for sure. Unfortunately MP,s are never held accountable for their stupidity, and we as the tax payers, always pick up the pieces, but what really pxsses me off, is these parasites, know that we can’t do a dam thing to change it!!!!! What a mess the UK has become!! And by the way, I am only a Welder, not some high-flyer like our people in authority.

Sometimes Protecting your capital is much more important than making money. Basically because if you lose your capital, making money is much harder. ''Missing the train'' vs. ''losing your money''. There are a lot of trains, but if your money is gone, it's over.

Bloomberg and other finance media have been recording cases of folks gaining over 250k just in a matter of weeks/couple months, so I think there are a lot of wealth transfer in this downtime if you know where to look. I have been using an FA since 2020, and I return at least $30k ROI, and this does not include capital gain.

Yet British people with mental health issues are being insulted and called lazy many are living on the streets. All of our systems have been cut back to the bone. Our jobs are being lost to over seas companies. We have nothing left in the UK for us to grow from. Now Labour has made this all worse by shutting down oil and Gas. We don’t have the infrastructure set up for all the demands that are going to be put on the system that is woefully inadequate. Looks like we are all going to freeze this winter. Disabled people haven’t always been ill , they’ve contributed. I’m livid …

I would expect a big reduction in the annual ISA allowance and quite likely a lifetime allowance on them too; I doubt Starmer & Reeves have much sympathy for the increasing cohort of ISA millionaires! For my non ISA & pension assets I have instructed my wealth manager to switch mostly into worldwide index tracking funds which won't need much if any annual rebalancing, thus triggering gain realisations, and I'll also be moving more into offshore bonds so I can withdraw up to 5% pa tax free for at least 20 years (which I hope will see this government out!) while still, I hope, benefitting from gross roll-up. On IHT, I wouldn't be surprised to see lifetime transfers brought into immediate charge (effectively Capital Transfer Tax resurrected), with the 7 year rule abolished. I'll be interested to see what they do with VCT, SEIS and EIS which I have found vey useful.

I’m completely happy with CGT going up, I pay CGT and it’s fine. There needs to be wealth taxes, you simply can’t tax income of the poorest any more. I’d increase the 45% income tax rate to 50% and use this money to increase the basic rate threshold. I pay 45% tax and I’m ok with it. The country is broken and it needs fixing. For example im using my private health insurance to get an operation that has a two year waiting list on the NHS. It’s simply not fair. If you earn huge amounts of have huge wealth then pay more tax. As for my kids, they will inherit no more than a house, I’d simply ruin their lives if I left the £2m. I guess looking at the comments this won’t go down well, but seriously how much money does anyone need when there are millions of people in work claiming benefits and using food banks.

Very good talk. So i subscribed. It better not be the case that I've saved hard all my life when i should've spent it all on having fun at the time. Does the govt want us to be irresponsible spenders rather than people who don't have to rely on the state in old age?

Can you be more specific (on the date) in regards to [5 mins & 15 secs] "that the current agreement is due to expire in a couple of years" ... would this be for April 2026 ??? ... and do they not have to give any notice whatsoever ? ... or that they can announce it at midnight of the day before implementation ? ???

@ 2.38 Who would have predicted a global pandemic? Quite a few of us actually, if we were paying attention and were aware of the numerous predictions and forward panning, such as Event 201.

If we have to pay a bit more tax, It will be worth it to get working public services, especially the NHS and police.
