This was a good basics on the topic. Ultimately most manga will yellow over time. UV light causes the lignin in the paper to polymerize. The florescent bulbs at book stores as well as sunlight (which you mentioned) accelerates the chemical process. Also, oxygen is a huge enemy. Obviously it's hard to store your manga in inert gases or a vacuum. However, the real enemy to manga longevity is glue actually. I've been collecting for about 20 years now. Stuff I bought new back in the early 2Ks are starting to come unglued. This is why I love companies like Kodansha and Dark Horse doing sewn bindings on bleached paper in hardbacks. These will last much much longer and resist yellowing.

For the person with the smoker parents: if the room you keep your manga in is one you could reliably keep closed, an air purifier that uses real HEPA filters could help. It would probably be a relatively expensive choice since having to filter out all that smoke will most likely make you go through HEPA filters pretty quickly, but it's an option if you *really* want to keep your manga out and can afford to change out the filter a few times a year.

Great video and tips! I can't speak on what to do if you live in a house with smoke or smells, however I did have an issue once where I received books from ebay that smelled strongly of smoke. I searched online and found this helpful tip: put the manga/books in a ziploc bag with some baking soda or activated charcoal, which will absorb the smell, then you can shake off the powder afterward. I kept them in the bag for almost a week and although it wasn't perfect, the majority of the smell did dissipate. Hope this can help anyone that has this problem! Keep up the great work and videos! :)

As a bookseller, I can add that book cover bleaching by the sunlight can vary depending on the type of ink used on the cover. We usually let our window display facing the street up to one month (and in direct contact with the sunlight) and one book in particular strike me as whitening hyper fast (it had an orange cover that just turned yellow IN TWO WEEKS!!!, you could see a very sharp contrast between the back and the front). Most book can take it, but some book are hopeless. Also for the smoke issue, it does get better after some time, I'm hyper sensitive to odour but I buy a lot of second hand book and one was particularly extreme in its condition (but it was a rare book so I couldn't just abandon it). It actually stink my room for a week (I had to put it elsewhere for some time) and 4 years later (I just did a smell test for this comment), it barely still smells (there's a very faint odour still left) and doesn't leave smell on my hand anymore. So, yes, if you can avoid smoke, it can be good, but with time, it will come off.

If you have the money, I would bail on the curtain idea and swap it out with a uv filtering acrylic sheet to cover each shelf or better yet diy it into a cabinet door. Not only will you protect it from sunlight but you’ll be able to protect it from dust and enjoy viewing it. There are also such things as UV blocking window film that you can also place on your windows to prevent harmful light to reach your manga. Also when it comes to moisture and odor control, get both a dehumidifier and an air purifier.

Sunlight doesn't yellow the paper. The atmosphere does. That's why the whole page is yellow, and not just the edge exposed to the light. Ultraviolet light does fade the dyes in the inks on your covers and spines though. The actual pages yellow from the chemical reaction happening in the cellulose from oxidation. This is the point of bags. They're acid free, and protect your manga from oxidation. Humidity shouldn't be a problem in most climates while using bags.

Something I never see discussed as a solution to smoke, mold, and other smells: ozone machines can be used in these instances to remove the odors. They're $50 - 100 depending on the brand. These can be very dangerous machines if the proper precautions aren't taken. The machines should be placed in air tight containers with the books and left on for a few hours. The edges and such for the container should be sealed with tape or putty so nothing escapes. They're easy machines to use but you gotta be careful. They can cause breathing problems, eye irritation, nausea, fatigue, etc if you don't contain it. They're pretty expensive but you never know when you'll need to use one. Maybe a used car you bought was owned by a smoker or there's an accidental fire in your kitchen. Or you get mold after a flood. It also removes cat and dog urine odors, but you'd probably need a bigger machine and it'd have to be left for at least a day in those instances (and you can't be in the house).

Question: you know how some people have glass doors on their bookshelf’s? Would that be a good way to prevent smoke from damaging the manga?

Same question here , though it’s obvious that it won’t block the UV rays from the sunlight, as for the moisture maybe (based on what I saw from Joe’s glass cube, from “YOU”.)
