How to PROPERLY Use Supersets to Maximize Growth (3 Science-Based Tips)

Supersets are often incorporated in workouts to both save time and potentially enhance muscle growth. Now although there’s endless superset workouts you can do (superset workouts for chest, arms, legs, etc.) and several potential benefits of supersets in terms of saving time and enhancing growth, it’s key that you first learn how to do supersets for the best results. But first, let’s explain what supersets are in the first place: a superset involves training two muscles back to back with the use of two different exercises. They’re mainly used to save time, but as you’ll see, “use supersets for muscle growth” may actually hold some truth to it as well - given that you perform your super sets properly. First thing you need to do is use agonist-antagonist supersets. This can be done with an arms superset workout (by supersetting the biceps and triceps), with a chest and back supersets workout, or with a legs superset with the hamstrings and quadriceps. In any case, you’re supersetting two opposing muscle groups which seems to actually enhance performance rather than hinder it. Next, you want to use “staggered rest periods” with your supersets as opposed to immediately going from one exercise to the other. This enables you to still give your muscles adequate rest while still saving time with your supersets workout routine. Lastly, I would avoid supersets on taxing movements like the squat, deadlift, and Olympic lifts. Utilizing supersets on these movements seems to do more harm than good. But all in all, supersets do seem like a viable method to save time while enhancing performance in the process.

    ok then I should probably just not do supersets because I follow my back and biceps day with chest and triceps. If I am doing superset with the muscle group I am using the next day then my muscles will not have enough rest. Would this be a correct assumption

    Sometimes I'm amazed at how much research there is on exercise. It's mind blowing how many studies on different aspects of workouts and nutrition have been conducted. I can't help but wonder how much of that time, however, could have been spent researching things which we still know so little about today, like psychedelic mushrooms our the impacts or actions have on the environment.

    Fav Superset: an Arnold favorite. "Breathing squats", meaning 20 reps of a squat where the weight becomes difficult around the 12th rep & by the 15th rep you need to take a few deep breaths between reps .. And Cross-Bench DB Pullovers, 20 reps. Feels great for the lungs, stretches out the ribcage, thoracic spine & core that just got compressed during the squat, allows your legs to rest and in general just feels exhilarating!

    Chest and back are my favorite super-sets! (I'm taking a break from them now ... been doing them for 25 years ... tried single body part programs, only to go back to supers!) I pair: Dumbbell flat bench / wide-grip pullups; dumbbell incline / t-bar rows; decline barbell / pulley rows. What I discover, for me, is that I can lift more because the push-pull somehow gives me extra strength to perform both sides of the torso. Thanks, Jeremy ... you're doing a great job!

    Are they the only super-sets you do? What about legs, bi, tri, abs. What sets do you do for those?

  • @StevenBarra

    @StevenBarra

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@froggyjosh Wow ...I made this comment two years ago! And then, I followed a six-week core-building full body program ...that took me 12 weeks to complete! (the workouts were too long ... I had to split them). But ... when I returned to my superset routine of 30 years .... I saw vast improvements! For bis and tris (everything is 3 sets x 8-12 reps): Close-grip bench press (this position forces the tricep to work) with curls (done on the crimpted curl bar); dips with reverse curls; tricep push-downs with cable preacher bench curls ... do between 8-12 reps with a two-minute rest. If at 12 reps it becomes too easy to move, increase your weight; and I do a finisher of single-arm tricep pushdowns with single are cable standing curls ... 40x each arm (done with light weight .... If you have to break up the 40 ... that's cool .. but you have to get 40 reps done ... 3x sets). Delts and traps .... I don't superset; legs, the only thing that do are leg extensions with lying leg curls. My BEST recommendation for you is to get the book: Franco Columbu's Complete Book of Bodybuilding. It will take you from beginner's levels up to expert. When I finally got up to exper level, he had a chapter on supersets ... I have since modified the routine ... but I find that it was the best for me and my growth. Thank you so much for the question ...good luck and keep the pump up!
