I'm currently building one out of a subaru impreza RS! I don't have a tube bender and it would be really cool to see a video of how to make a strong kart with no tube bender. Keep the vids coming!

Your best bet would be to buy a prebent cage kit for the Main hoop and a pillars. It wouldn’t be safe to have miters instead of bends

Square tube looks like super ghetto and like I said before mitered and welded joints aren’t nearly as strong as bends

Just a tip for anyone about to do this. It's a good idea to tack weld in a couple tubes from the a pillar base to near the rear shock mount in an x pattern. This will prevent the chassis from twisting or moving once you remove all the structure of the roof.

About $5k for the tube work

The best place to start is look at the rule book for where you plan to use your car, design your cage based on their tech rules. Likely since a kart doesn't have doors and stuff you may want to add to it, but the rule book is a good place to start. Not planning on taking your car to a track? I would suggest looking at the scca rules for autocross or time attack. Or perhaps the rules for a pro/am formula drift car?

Can you make some more of these I'm trying to build an off-road version of a death kart and I'm using a fox body mustang could use some more pointers to base mine off of

Matt 6berries I'm not the most skilled mechanic or fab guy the chopping up part seems very straight forward but putting in the new tube chassis and roll cage proper instal will be my next step

For the cage make sure to use proper sized tubing, lots of triangulation and good welds

My I don't know if you can call death Kart is going to be a lot heavier due to undercarriage skid plates things of those Nature's it's going to be designed almost completely different I'm just basing the whole principle idea off of the death Kart

I was a bit sad to see the AE die... But always down to recycle and repurpose things!

jason boatner we usually use 1.5x0.095 with the main bar as 1.5x.120 just for a little extra support

Im thinking of doing this to my old lexus. It's not worth selling so I might as well turn it into something cool and practice tig welding instead of me always busting out the flux mig

Sawzall is doing fine. I keep the speed on it turned down to make blades last longer. But yeah my blades were pretty dead when I was doing this and I didn't have any more

i feel like this is kinda a waste since the ae86 suspension is too basic you'd be better off with almost any other car as a base. you could have had independent rear and better and cheaper access to replacement parts

Couldn't even watch this, what a disgrace to a legendary car. Even if I was rich I wouldn't hack up no ae86, unless it was completely destroyed. Whoever the customer is needs a slap to the face & kick in the groin.
